The following are four once-in-a-lifetime mountain hikes.
The Inca Trail, Peru The Inca Trail offers a seven-day hike focused on unique Peruvian culture. Led by our well-in-formed guides, you’ll see some historical villages, visit an old-fashioned coffee farm, and attend a traditional offering to “Pachamama” (Mother Earth). After a long day on your feet, relax with a traditional Peruvian meal and take a rest in a local cottage.
The Dolomites, Italy The On Foot Holidays’ self-guided hike through the Dolomites covers the grassland of South Tyrol, the famous peaks of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo and the amazing town of Ampezzo. You’ll climb from the Falzarego Pass, cross through to the Col dei Bos and up Mt. Lagazuoi, with its network of World War I tunnels.
Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania More than 19,000 feet above sea level, Mount Kilimanjaro, an inactive volcano, is Africa’s highest mountain. You can go through five climate zones while climbing it. A Duma Explorer offers several different routes up Kilimanjaro — the most popular are the seven-day Machame route, eight-day Lemosho route and a nine-day trip via the Northern Circuit. Hikes include camping equipment, meals and guides.
Chilkoot Trail, Alaska In 1897, the Chilkoot Trail was transformed from a sleepy trade route into a busy road, as part of the Gold Rush. The rush dried up within a year, but you can follow in the boomers’ footsteps with Alaska Shore Hikes, through thick forest and up the Sainly Hill. Then it’s a peaceful raft ride along the Taiya River. A six-hour hike provided with transportation, snacks and safety equipment.

Rosa Parks has been called the mother of the American civil rights movement. She was born in 1913 in Tuskegee, Alabama. She left school early to care for her sick grandmother, then to care for her mother.
Rosa married Raymond Parks in 1932. He was also a civil rights activist. Together, they worked for the local group of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). In 1943, Rosa became a leader in the group.
Rosa Parks was a seamstress(女裁缝) in Montgomery. She sewed clothes from 1930 to 1955. Life became increasingly difficult for Rosa Parks and her family after the Montgomery Bus Boycott(蒙哥马利巴士抵制运动). She lost her job and could not find another. Then she had been a representation of freedom for millions of African-Americans since 1955.
Through the years, Rosa Parks continued to work for the NAACP and appeared at civil rights events. She was a quiet woman and often seemed uneasy with her fame. But she said that she wanted to help people, especially young people. In 1987, she founded the Rosa and Raymond Parks Institute to improve the lives of black children.
Rosa Parks received two of the nation’s highest honors for her civil rights activities. In 1996, former President Clinton honored her with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. And in 1999, she received the Congressional Gold Medal.
Rosa Parks died on October 24, 2005. Her body lay in the United States Capitol building in Washington. She was the first American woman to be so honored. The European Union has agreed on new rules stating that all cars built after May 2022 and sold in the European Union will have built-in speed limiters.
So-called intelligent speed assistance (ISA) recognizes what the speed limit is in a given area through the use of GPS or speed sign recognition cameras, and shows the limit to the driver. It can automatically limit the car’s speed, but it does not automatically stop drivers from speeding up beyond the limit if they need to do so for safety or overtaking reasons. This will be possible by applying extra pressure to the accelerator pedal.
Other mandatory(强制性的) safety features for cars include: built-in breathalyzers to stop drunk drivers from starting the engine; drowsiness and distraction recognition systems to warn people when they’re at risk of falling asleep or looking at their smartphones; black-box-style recorders to record what happens in accidents; systems to warn truck and bus drivers of nearby cyclists and pedestrians when they’re making turns.
“Every year,25,000 people lose their lives on our roads. The vast majority of these accidents are caused by human error,” said Elzbieta Bienkowska, the EU’s industry commissioner. “We can and must act to change this. With the new advanced safety features that will become mandatory, we can have the same kind of effects as when the safety belts were first introduced.”
There has been mixed reaction to the new safety features. The EU said the new safety features could save up to 10,500 lives and avoid up to 60,000 serious injuries by the year 2030. Many drivers are unhappy with the technology. One British driver said he didn’t want data recorders in his car because that was like Big Brother was watching him.
8. What can we learn about ISA technology from the passage?
A. It reminds drivers not to drive too fast.
B. It prevents drivers driving at a very high speed.
C. It warns drivers when they are looking at their smartphones.
D. It tells drivers to watch out for nearby cyclists and pedestrians.
9. Why are the cars equipped with breathalyzers?
A. To limit the speed of cars. B. To stop drunk driving.
C. To inform drivers of potential dangers. D. To check if the driver is sleepy.
10. What does Elzbieta Bienkowska intend to tell us by mentioning the safety belts?
A. Better alternative safety equipment should be brought in.
B. The safety of cars has always been the focus of public attention.
C. The new mandatory safety features for cars are quite necessary.
D. Safety belts have helped save lots of lives since they were introduced.
11. What are many drivers unhappy with?
A. The poor road conditions. B. The increasingly high gas price.
C. The data recorders in their cars. D. The large number of traffic accidents.
D
When it’s five o’clock, people leave their offices. The length of the workday, for many workers, is controlled by time. They leave when the clock tells them they’re done.
These days, the time is everywhere, not just on clocks or watches, but on cell-phones and computers. That may be a bad thing, particularly at work. New research shows that clock-based work schedules affect morale(士气) and creativity.
Clock-timers organize their day by dividing time into minutes and hours. For example, a meeting from 9 a.m.to10 a.m., research from 10 a.m. to noon, etc. On the other hand, task-timers have a list of things they want to complete. They work down the list; each task starts when the last task is completed. It is said that all of us employ a mix of both these types of planning.
What, then, are the effects of thinking about time in these different ways? Does one make us more efficient? Better at the tasks at hand? Happier? In experiments carried out by Tamar Avnet and Anne Laure, they had volunteers organize different activities — from project planning, holiday shopping, to yoga — by time or to-do list to observe how they performed under “clock time” vs “task time”. They found clock-timers to be more efficient but less happy because they felt little control over their lives. Task-timers are happier and more creative, but less efficient. They tend to enjoy the moment when something good is happening, and catch opportunities that come up.
The researchers argue that task-based organizing tends to be undervalued and under-supported in business culture. Smart companies, they believe, will try to make more task-based planning into their strategies.
This might be a small change to the way we view work and the office, but the researchers argue that it challenges a widespread characteristic of the economy: work organized by clock time. While most people will still probably need, and be to some extent, clock-timers, task-based timing should be used when performing a job that requires more creative. It’ll make those tasks easier, and the task-doers will be happier.
12. What does the author think of the time displayed everywhere?
A. It is a convenience for work and life. B. It may have a negative effect on creative work.
C. It shows the advance of modern society. D. It makes people have a good sense of time.
13. How do people usually go about their work?
A. They finish their work one by one. B. They set a time limit for each task.
C. They first make a list of things to be completed. D. They combine clock-based and task-based planning.
14. What do the researchers say about today’s business culture?
A. It makes more task-based planning into the strategies.
B. It doesn’t place enough importance on task-based practice.
C. It pays more attention to work efficiency than to workers’ lives.
D. It aims to bring employees’ morale and creativity into full play.
15. What do the researchers suggest?
A. Task-based timing should be preferred in doing creative work.
B. Performing creative jobs tends to make workers happier.
C. A scientific standard should be adopted in companies.
D. We should keep a balance between work and life.
