"The density of the material on Earth's surface is much 34 than the average(平均的) density of the whole Earth, so it tells us there5s something that has greater density below,55 Redfern said.
The challenge is to find out which heavy materials the core is made of. Scientists have found the main material is iron. 35 Earth formed 4.5 billion years ago, a lot of iron went to the core. About 80 percent of the Earth's center is 36 of iron. But what are 37 materials? Well, scientists are still working on finding that out.
The study of Earth5s core isn't just for scientists5 38 , but also for our needs. Its movement builds up a powerfill magnetic field (磁场).It 39 us against the sun's radiation (辐射)and is also needed for compasses and GPS systems.

A new school has opened recently. For an hour, pupils are taught how to use the mouse, the keyboard and the computer. Nothing unusual about that, you might think. But these pupils are toddlers, who are aged just two or three. We asked two experts their opinions on ''Technology for Toddlers,,: Do you think we should teach computer skills to very young children?
•YES
Judy Clarke, director of technology, York College
At my college, we think that . Although the usual age for the national school exams is 16, we put our best pupils forward for exams if we think they are ready. After having had great success with these courses, we began to think about the “Technology for Toddlers,^ classes. They aim at giving the pre-school pupils an early start not only in technology skills, but also in writing, reading and communication using the computer. Besides the lessons, we also encourage parents to get the children to practice their new skills at home. Parents say to me all the time, "Sarah can count up to 30 and is much better than her friends at the same age." or "Jack has gotten so much confidence from your classes.^^ Comments(评论)like these strengthen my belief in those courses.
• NO
Alan Jackson, educational psychologist (心理学家),Cardiff
Eve worked as an educational psychologist for many years and I must say that I'm very worried about this trend (趋势)for encouraging younger and younger children to use computers. The bad influence of looking at a screen for a long time at a young age is obvious(明显的).The lack (缺少)of physical exercise, for example, can lead to being overweight and the lack of communication with real people can lead to problems with speech development. These are just two of the problems, but I could go on and on. I feel sorry for these children who clearly need to be running around and climbing trees with their friends.
- The best sentence to fill in the blank in Paragraph 3 is___________.
A. Ifs never too old to learn. B. It's never too young to start.
C. Practice makes perfect. D. All roads lead to Rome.

- how hard Sarah and Jack have worked
- why some parents should feel proud of their children
- young children can improve in "Technology for Toddlers^, classes
- What does Alan Jackson mean by saying "but I could go on and on"?
A. He thinks toddlers have much more to learn at school.
- He still has much to do to deal with the serious problem.
- He will keep studying the matter of teaching toddlers computer skills.
- He thinks there are a lot more problems of young children using computers.
51 .Where can you find the passage? A. In a newspaper of a school. C. On the website of a college. | B. In a magazine about education. D. On the noticeboard of a neighborhood. D |
In sci-fi movies, there are sometimes characters who have microchips (微芯 片)implanted (植入)in their heads. This might become reality very soon.
US businessman Elon Musk's company Neuralink has developed a chip that was implanted into the head of a pig named Gertrude. On Aug 28, Musk did a livestream to show how it works.
The chip is the size of a small coin. But don't let its size fool you. The chip has over 3,000 electrodes (电极)that can monitor about 1,000 neurons 0申经元)in the brain. It can pick up signals there and translate these signals(信号)into actions, such as moving an arm or leg. Then it sends these signals to nearby computers, according to MSN. In the livestream, while Gertrude the pig was snuffling (用鼻子吸气)around in a pen (猪圈),people could see her brain activity on a large screen.
If this technology is used on humans, it means people might be able to control computers or other machines with their minds. For now, the main purpose is to use it to help disabled people. They could control artificial limbs (假肢)with their minds and move around more easily. People could finally use the technology to play video games or even drive cars.
However, there is still a long way to go to make these things happen. The chip can send signals from about 500 neurons in the pig's brain while the human brain has 80 billion neurons. Also, it is not completely safe to implant the chip yet, as it could harm the human brain. Hackers (黑客)could cause a danger by hacking into the chip and controlling it. They might know others5 thoughts and feelings without permission.
There are ethical (伦理的)problems, too. When humans are connected to computers, are they still humans?
- What was Musk's livestream about?
A. How microchips work in sci-fi movies.
C. How to implant a chip into a pig's head.
- The underlined word "monitor" in paraphrase 3 probably means "
A. move easily B. mark closely
- What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. How this kind of chip could help humans.
C. Who has been able to use this kind of chip.
- What is NOT true according to the passage?
- Neuralink has developed a chip to be implanted into the head of a human.
- Neurons in the human's brain are much more than those in the pig's.
- The chip to be implanted into a human may cause more than safety problems.
- Scientists are ready to implant the chips in humans.

If you look at a 10-US-dollar note, you'll see a figure printed on it—Alexander Hamilton (1755-1804), one of the founding fathers(开 国元勋)of the United States. Now this historic man has become popular among young people in the US because of a musical(音乐居lj)
that tells the story of his life.
The Broadway musical "Hamilton" came out in 2015. On Independence Day weekend,
July 3, Disney made it available on their online video platform for people around the world to watch.
The musical is based on real history of which the first scenes pull you back to 1776. That is when a 19-year-old freshly arrived from the Caribbean. The musical shows how Hamilton went from being an immigrant orphan (移 民孤儿)to a war hero, to Washington's right-hand man to build a new country, to the Treasury(国库)head who made an untrusting world believe in the American economy. Hamilton, together with the other founding fathers, all makes their mark in this amazingly-new musical experience.
The story is serious, but the show uses hip-hop musical numbers to present it in a way that young people can understand. Hip-hop singers usually use a lot of slang (俚语)and rap at a fast speed which are seldom used in musicals, especially in one with the theme of history. Thus, at the same time, the musical proves that without doubt, American society opens its arms to 第8页共12页
different kinds of cultures.
According to news website Mental Floss, Hamilton is the fhstest-paced(节奏)Broadway musical ever. It has 46 songs in total which means performers rap more than 20,000 words during the two-and-a-half-hour show. Hearing the US founding fathers rapping on stage "… brings excitement to probably boring subject matter,,5 Screen Rant wrote in a review.
Hamilton's mixture of serious historic storytelling and modem music style has made it a hit around the world which at the same time spreads American culture. Behind the success lies the hardship of the writer. As the writer Monique Mulligan wrote, "Creating a musical is a skill like mixing together ingredients (原料)in a cake in a complicated order and process, while the one about history is far beyond that."
- What recently made young people take an interest in Alexander Hamilton?
- Being printed on the 10-dollar note. B. Helping George Washington found the US.
C. A Disney movie about his life. D. A musical about him on the Internet.
- According to Screen Rant, how does rapping make a difference?
A. It provides a new way to tell stories. B. It makes the performance more interesting.
C. It makes the performance short. D. It allows young people to understand musicals.
- What can we infer from the passage?
- It is not a common practice for the slang and rap to appear in musicals.
- The rappers have to rap no more than 130 words a minute.
- The Chinese musical <4Mu Lan" must have been welcomed when shown in Broadway.
- Only Hamilton appears and raps in the musical.
- The structure of the passage may be___________.

Pei Ju was a government official who served during both the Sui (581-618) and Tang (618-907) dynasties, but in these two dynasties he was totally different.
According to historical records, Pei often flattered (奉承)Emperor Yangdi of the Sui Dynasty. He never disagreed with the emperor's ideas, even though he knew they might be wrong. Knowing that Emperor Yangdi was very warlike, Pei suggested fighting many wars. This, however, led to Suj's downfell, as the wars cost too many human and material resources. But Pei seemed to become a totally different person when he started to serve in the Tang Dynasty. Instead of flattering Emperor Taizong, Pei always spoke out against his wrongs and tried his best to help Taizong make the right decisions.
Why did Pei change? Pei was influenced by whom he worked for. Emperor Yangdi hated to be blamed(责备),while Emperor Taizong loved to hear honest advice. That made the difference.
In this story, Pei Ju may not be a perfect role model for us. What we can learn from this, however, is that our environment makes a difference. A good environment encourages you to do good things, while a bad one may lead you to do bad things. Thafs why people say "a fine bird rests only on a fine tree, and a virtuous minister only serves a virtuous master (良禽择木 而栖,贤臣择主而事)We should also try to put ourselves in a good environment where we can meet good teachers and friends.
On the other hand, the story also shows that only those who are willing to hear blames can learn a lot from them. President Xi Jinping once told this story at the Party School of the CPC Central Committee (中央党校).He said that government officials should be open-minded and welcome honest advice.
- Did Pei Ju always agree with the Emperor's ideas in the Sui Dynasty?
- Why was Pei Ju honest with Emperor Taizong?
- According to the writer, what can be learned from the story?

People love junk food and it's hard to say no to it. However, 74 too much junk food can harm your brain, especially if you're between the ages of 10 and 19.
"Junk food shapes teenagers5 brains in ways that are harmful to their ability to think, learn and remember. It can also make 75 harder for them to control impulsive(冲动的)behaviors," said Amy Reichelt, a brain expert at Western University, Canada.
Reichelt and her team reviewed more than 100 studies about 76 poor food choices can influence teen brains and they were able to find out some reasons. They discovered that teenagers are more sensitive(敏感的)to foods with a lot of fat and sugar, as their brains are not yet fully formed.
Teen brains are still developing the ability to control themselves. The prefrontal cortex(前 额皮质)is the part of the brain that 77 us do this. However, this part won't fully develop
78 we reach our early 20s.
