Brownie and Spotty were neighbor dogs who met every day to play together. Like pairs of dogs you can find in any neighborhood, these two loved each other and played together so often that they had worn a path through the grass of the field between their houses.
One evening, Brownie’s family noticed that Brownie hadn’t returned home. They went looking for him with no success. Brownie didn’t show up the next day, and although they made their efforts to find him, by the next week he was still missing.
Curiously, Spotty showed up at Brownie’s house alone, barking and jumping. Busy with their own lives, they paid no attention to the nervous little neighbor dog.
Finally, one morning Spotty refused to take ‘‘no’’ for an answer. Ted, Brownie’s owner, was continuously disturbed by the angry, determined little dog. Spotty followed Ted about, barking all the time, then darting toward a nearby empty lot (an area of land) and back, as if to say, ‘‘Follow me! It’s urgent (紧急的)! ‘‘
Eventually, Ted followed Spotty across the empty lot as Spotty stopped to race back and barked encouragingly. The little dog led the man to a deserted spot. There Ted found his beloved Brownie alive, one of his legs stuck in a steel trap. Frightened, Ted now wished he had followed Spotty earlier.
Then Ted noticed something. Spotty had done something else besides leading Brownie’s human owner to his trapped friend. In a circle around the injured dog, Ted found some food remains of every meal. Brownie had been fed that week! Spotty had been visiting Brownie regularly, in the hope of keeping his friend alive. Spotty had actually stayed with Brownie to protect him from hunger and other dangers, and keep his spirits up.
Brownie’s leg was carefully treated and he soon got well again. For many years thereafter the two families watched the faithful friends running after each other down that well-worn path between their houses.
    24. At the very beginning, Ted paid little attention to Spotty because________.
    A. he was not free at the moment B. he was sure Brownie would be OK
    C. he didn’t like Spotty D. his missing dog made him sad
    25. The underlined word ‘‘darting’’ in the fourth paragraph can be replaced by_________.
    A. walking B. shouting C. rushing D. looking
    26. After Ted was brought where Brownie was trapped, he_________.
    A. managed to free his dog at once B. was very thankful to Spotty
    C. regretted not following Spotty earlier D. was angry with the trap-maker
    27. We can infer from the passage that__________.
    A. humans and animals depend on each other for comfort
    B. it’s not right to hunt animals in any neighborhood
    C. Ted has to take better care of his beloved dog later on
    D. it was Spotty’s timely help that saved Brownie
    C
My six-year-old granddaughter stared at me as if she were seeing me for the first time. “Grandma, you are an antique(古董),” she said. “You are old. Antiques are old. You are my antique.”
I was not satisfied to let the matter rest there. I took out the Webster’s Dictionary and read the definition to Jenny. I explained, “An antique is not only old, it’s an object existing since or belonging to earlier times, a work of art, a piece of furniture. Antiques are treasured,” I told Jenny as I put away the dictionary. “They have to be handled carefully because they sometimes are very valuable. In order to qualify as an antique, the object has to be at least 100 years old.”
    “I’m only 67,” I reminded Jenny.
We looked around the house for other antiques, besides me. There was a desk that was handed down from Rone aunt to another and finally to our family. “It’s very old,” I told Jenny. “I try to keep it polished and I show it off whenever I can. You do that with antiques."
There was a picture on the wall bought at a garage sale. It was dated 1867. “Now that’s an antique,” I said with pride. “Over 100 years old.” Of course it was marked up and scratched (刮坏) and not in very good condition. “Sometimes age does that,” I told Jenny. “But the marks are good marks. They show living, or being around. That’s something to display with pride. In fact, sometimes, the more an object shows age, the more valuable it can become.” I believed this was important for my own self-worth.
Our tour of antiques continued. There was a vase on the floor. It had been in my house for a long time. I was not certain where it came from but I didn’t buy it new. One thing about antiques, I explained to Jenny, was that they usually had a story. They’d been in one home and then another, handed down from one family to another, traveling all over the place. They’d lasted through years and years. They could have been thrown away, or ignored, or destroyed, or lost. But instead, they survived.
For a moment, Jenny looked thoughtful. “I don’t have any antiques but you,” she said. Then her face brightened, “Could I take you to school for show and tell?” “Only if I fit into your backpack,” I answered. And then Jenny’s antique lifted her up and embraced her in a hug that would last through the years.
    28. Why did Grandma read the definition of “antique” to Jenny?
    A. To tell Jenny the importance of protecting antiques.
    B. To list all the important characteristics of antiques.
    C. To express her disappointment at being called “antique”.
    D. To change Jenny’s shallow understanding of antiques.
    29. Which of the following information did grandma express to Jenny?
    A. The desk reminded her of her dear relatives.
    B. There was usually a sad story behind each antique.
    C. The spots on the picture showed its age and value.
    D. She planned to buy a new vase to replace the old one.
    30. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
    A. Grandma had a deep long-lasting love for Jenny.
    B. Jenny was too young to know grandma’s humor.
    C. Jenny had a strong desire for grandma’s love.
    D. Grandma was too old to lift Jenny up.
    31. What can be the best title for the passage?
    A. Grandma’s Antique B. Jenny’s Antique
    C. A Tour of Antiques D. A Story of Antiques
    D

When people visit the site, they not only have the experience of seeing the real grottoes, but they can appreciate the admirable artworks more clearly and in greater detail.
In the future, Dunhuang Academy will continue to cooperate with Huawei to create more colorful virtual content to enrich the experience of Mogao Art on the platform, helping people around the world get to know Dunhuang Art better.

    书面表达(one possible version)
    Students Like Associations
This term our school organized more than 10 associations, such as music, arts, literature, manga, photography and so on. Students can choose what they are interested in freely. The students who join the same association hold activities in the same place. The activities will take place from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. every Friday.
Students think highly of the associations. They say it is useful to develop their specialties and they have learned a lot that is not in textbooks and they have got a great deal of practice. However, students are not quite satisfied. They hope to see more associations and to get help from teachers. What is more, they suggest that they have chance to communicate with other schools.

M: Why not just take a camera?
W: I can send pictures from my mobile, but not from my camera.
    (Text 6)
M: Mary, you’re free this weekend. We said we’re going to see a movie on Saturday, right? But what time?
W: It’s cheapest in the afternoon, and very expensive at night of course, so let’s go in the afternoon.
    M: Sounds good.
W: But you mentioned that new action movie. Well, that’s what you want to see, but I’d rather see that war movie or the new silent movie.
M: I thought we’d agreed on the action movie. My friends told me that movie was very funny.
W: Okay, I’m fine with that.
    (Text 7)
W: Mark, what are you going to do after you return to England?
M: I’m going to receive some training on how to teach.
W: So do you want to become a teacher in the future?
M: Yes. I love being with children, so I want to teach students aged from 6 to 11 after receiving the training.
W: So what subjects do you want to teach the most? Is it English, math, or music?
M: None of them. Actually, I love teaching science the most. I hope more young people will be interested in science in the future.
    (Text 8)
M: Good morning. Youth Tour Agency. What can I do for you?
W: Good morning. I’ d like to ask about the tour prices to Beijing, China.
M: We have tour groups to Beijing every week. So when will you be leaving and how many days would you like to travel there?
W: From October 1st to 6th. It’s said that it’s a good time to visit the city at that time of year.
M: That’s true. So what places do you want to visit there?
W: I especially want to visit the Forbidden City and the Great Wall. I’m not that interested in the Summer Palace, though I don’t mind visiting it if it’s included in the tour.
M: I see. It’s 1, 000 dollars for one person. And a 10% discount is offered for two.
W: It’s not that expensive. I can accept that. Then I’ll try to talk my friend into joining me.
    (Text 9)
M: Mary, let’s decide who does what. Who is going to organize the schedule for our event?
W: I’ll do that first. Shall I make some notices too?
M: Yes. Where shall we put them up?
W: Well, we can put them up in all the offices.
M: Good idea. Can I give you a hand with that?
W: Great! And we need lots of tables and chairs. Ray, will you organize that?
M: No, Anthony will do that. What about the food and drinks? We don’t want Kim to do it— everyone will be ill! But he can help do the shopping.
    W: OK. What about music?
M: Why don’t we ask Steve? He is in a really good jazz band. They could play while people are eating.
W: Yes, why not? Oh, but remember, we can’t pay anyone. Anything else?
M: Who is going to write the questions?
W: I’ll ask Janet to do that. She has got lots of general knowledge books at home.
    M: Right. That’s it.
    (Text 10)
Our library will open after three-month repair work. Although we had some money problems, I think visitors will be surprised at how different everything is. We didn’t replace the windows as we’d planned. They just needed repairing. We’ve been able to replace all those old wooden shelves. The computers have been moved to a new IT room. Sadly, money ran out before we had the chance to paint the meeting room but we’re hoping to complete that next year. Oh, you can see our new tables and chairs.
The doors will open on 28 August. Then we get down to business in September. The local History Society will be meeting on the first Monday of each month at 7:30 as usual. We’ll be starting our Wednesday lunchtime Book Club at l: 00 pm. The Computer Club won’ t be running in September as we still need to complete work in the IT room, but this will certainly be returning in October. And we’re especially looking forward to welcoming a local writer, Sally Wainwright, to a new event on 22 September. Visitors will be able to hear her read from her latest works.
