Alan Naiman was known for being very careful about how he spent his money. But even those closest to him had no knowledge of the fortune he quietly gathered and the last act he had planned.
Naiman died of cancer at age 63 last January. The man from the American state of Washington gave most of his money to groups that help the poor, sick, disabled and abandoned children.
He gave them $11 million. The large amount of his fortune shocked the groups that received his gifts and even his best friends. That is because Naiman had been known to repair his own shoes with duct tape. He had sought deals to buy food from grocery stores at closing time and taken friends out to lunch at low cost restaurants.
Naiman died unmarried and childless. He loved children but also was intensely private. He saved, invested and worked extra jobs to gather money. He rarely spent the money on himself after seeing how unfair life could be for children who suffer most.
Naiman was a former banker who worked for the past 20 years at the state Department of Social and Health Services. He earned $67,234 a year and also took on side jobs. Sometimes, he worked as many as three at a time. He saved and invested enough to make several millions of dollars. He also received millions more from his parents after they died.
He left $2.5 million to the Pediatric Interim Care Center in Washington. The center is a private organization that cares for babies born to mothers who abused drugs and children with drug dependency. The center used the money to pay off its mortgage (按揭) and buy a new vehicle to transport the children.
Naiman gave $900, 000 to the Treehouse, where children without parents can choose toys and necessities for free. Treehouse is using Naiman’s money to expand its college and career support services Statewide.
4.Why were Naiman’s best friends shocked at his donation?
A.He left nothing to his relatives.
B.He was dishonest in his economic conditions.

D.He used to be very careful to spend money.

B.It offered more toys to children.
C.It sent more children to college.
D.It helped more women give up drugs.
Scientists say they have found out a chemical produced by locusts(蝗虫)that causes the insects to join together in huge swarms(群).
On their own, locusts are mostly harmless. But in large swarms, they can be extremely destructive. The new finding could lead to new methods to prevent locusts from joining swarms to destroy huge areas of crops.
A recent study published in Nature identifies a pheromone believed to be responsible for the insect’s swarming behavior. A pheromone is a chemical item produced by an animal that influences the behavior of another animal of the same kind.
The pheromone, known as 4VA, was found in the world’s most widespread kind of locust, the migratory locust. It powerfully drew locusts of both sexes and all ages, the research found. And it was produced when as few as four to five locusts came together.
Lead researcher Le Kang is with the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Zoology. He told Reuters news agency that migratory locusts are so widespread and dangerous, they represent"a serious threat to agriculture worldwide. " Kang said further research will be needed to find out if 4VA exists in other species, such as the desert locust.
Kang said a chemical could be developed to block 4VA’s effects to prevent swarming. A man-made version of the pheromone might also be developed to attract locusts into traps to be killed. Locusts could also be developed with genetic changes that would not react to 4VA, Kang added. Such locusts could be sent to the wild to build wild non-swarming populations.
Leslie Vosshall, head of Rockefeller University’s Laboratory of Neurogenetics and Behavior in New York, said one of the most exciting developments would be finding a chemical that could block the reception of 4VA.She noted that there are still several unknowns about the research. These include whether 4VA is the only cause of swarm formation, and whether other locust species respond similarly to the chemical.
8.What is the new finding of the study?
A.New methods could be used to stop locusts.
B.Locusts do not cause much damage on their own.
C.A large number of locusts can destroy the crops terribly.
D.Locusts swarm because of a chemical produced by themselves.
9.What can we learn about the pheromone?
A.It only exists in the migratory locust. B.It is made at least in groups of forty.
C.It is to blame for the locust’s swarming. D.It affects the behavior of other animals.
10.What is Leslie’s attitude toward the prevention of the locust’s swarming?
A.Pessimistic. B.Optimistic. C.Subjective. D.Objective.
11.Which can be a suitable title of this passage?
A.Can we kill locusts? B.How do locusts destroy crops?
C.How do locusts get swarmed? D.Can we control the locust’s damaging?
SHOULD WE FIGHT NEW TECHNOLOGY?
This morning, I saw the shocking headline: “Passenger Dies When Car Crashes in Driverless Mode”. In the article, a lot of people said that the public should oppose the idea of developing driverless cars. They said that some advances in technology were unnecessary and could even be dangerous. Hence, we should cease accepting technology just because it is new. The newspaper reported that the car company had already apologized for the accident, but the families of the deceased said it was not enough. Nevertheless, the company still claimed that most people would be travelling in driverless cars one day soon.
On the one hand, there are many different groups of people around the world who live happily in the absence of new technology. Probably the most well-known are the Amish, a group of Christians living in rural America. They do not own or drive cars, watch TV, or use the Internet. They have lived mainly as farmers since the 18th century, and they will probably be living the same way in the distant future. They advocate a simple life with an emphasis on hard work, family, and community. They think that is better than caring about luxuries or following the lives of the rich and famous. It could even be argued that the Amish’s quality of life is better since they live in and appreciate the natural environment rather than living in large, polluted cities.
On the other hand, new technology has provided people everywhere with many benefits over the years. For example, the latest weather-tracking computer programs give people lots of warnings about potential natural disasters, which saves many lives. Moreover, the Internet has made it possible for friends and family to keep in touch easily even if they are on opposite sides of the world. It has also made finding opportunities in life much easier, as it allows people to make larger networks of friends through using social media.
Personally, I have benefited quite a lot from technological advances. I found my career as an AI designer through a social media network. My health monitor, which I wear all the time, has also helped me get into the best shape of my life. Of course, when new technology changes the way we live, it can be a scary prospect. Nevertheless, I will always look on the positive side of change and accept it rather than resist it.
12.What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A.A person died in an accident while driving his brand-new car.
B.The relatives of the victim would never accept the apology.
C.Many people took a negative attitude to this new technology.
D.The company was very concerned about the future of this new technology.
13.What is the author’s purpose in mentioning the Amish in the second paragraph?
A.To persuade us to follow their natural living style.
B.To tell us the Amish prefer a harmonious and peaceful life.
C.To prove people can still live better without new technology.
D.To advocate a simple life with family and community by hard work.
14.According to the third paragraph, which of the following benefits is not talked about?
A.Monitoring people’s physical health.
B.Providing chances in life more easily.
C.Predicting the earthquake and tsunami.
D.Helping people contact each other easily.
15.Why did the author decide to write about the passage?
A.To praise the advantages of new technology.
B.To show his supportive idea of new technology.
C.To criticize the disadvantages of new technology.
D.To arouse people’s concern about new technology.
