    第一节 (共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
    阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
    A
    My Favourite Books
Jo Usmar is a writer for Cosmopolitan and co-author of the This Book Will series(系列)of lifestyle books. Here she picks her top reads.
    Matilda
    Roald Dahl
I once wrote a paper on the influence of fairy tales on Roald Dahl's writing and it gave me a new appreciation for his strange and delightful words. Matilda's battles with her cruel parents and the bossy headmistress,Miss Trunchbull, are equally funny and frightening, but they're also aspirational.
    After Dark
    Haruki Murakami
It’s about two sisters-Eri,a model who either won’t or can’t stop sleeping, and Mari, a young student . In trying to connect to her sister. Mari starts changing her life and discovers a world of diverse “night people” who are hiding secrets.
    Gone Girl
    Gillian Fynn
There was a bit of me that didn't want to love this when everyone else on the planet did but the horror story is brilliant. There's tension(紧张) and anxiety from the beginning as Nick and Amy battle for your trust. It's a real whodunit and the frustration when you realise what's going on is horribly enjoyable
    The Stand
    Stephen King
This is an excellent fantasy novel from one of the best storytellers around. After a serious flu outbreak wipes out 99.4% of the world's population, a battle unfolds(展开) between good and evil (邪恶的)among those left. Randall Flagg is one of the scariest characters ever.
    21. Who does "I" refer to in the text?
    A. Stephen King. B. Jo Usmar. C.Gillian Flynn. D. Roald Dahl
    22. Which of the following tells about Mari and Eri?
    A. Cosmopolitan. B. Matilda. C. The Stand. D. After Dark.
    23. What kind of book is Gone Girl?
A.A fairy tale. B.A horror story.C.A love story. D.A biography.

It wasan ordinary August afternoon. After dropping off his last passenger, Mrs. Carey., Richard Allen followed her across the yard, lifting two heavy grocery bags. And soon he stood on the step of her house. Glancing up, he saw a large wasp(黄蜂) nest under the roof. Allen had heard that wasps can become more likely to sting (sting, sting, stung蜇) in summer. He mentioned this to Mrs. Carey, who had opened the door.
“Oh, they don’t bother me,” she said lightly. “I go in and out all the time.”
Anxiously, Allen looked at the nest again—— to see the wasps flying straight at him. “Hurry!” he shouted to Mrs. Carey. “Get in!”
She stepped quickly inside. Allen ran for his mini-bus. Too late; they were upon him. Just as he jumped aboard, half a dozen red spots showed on his arm, and he felt more on his back and shoulders.
As he was driving down the road, Allen felt as if something was burning at the back of his neck, and the “fire” was spreading forward toward his face. And immediate anxiety took hold of him. Allen knew that stings could cause some persons to die. But he had been stung the previous(之前的) summer and the after-effects soon passed. However, what he didn’t know was that the first sting had turned his body into a time bomb waiting for the next to set off an explosion(爆炸).
Miles from the nearest medical assistance, Allen began to feel his tongue thick and heavy and his heartbeat louder. Most frightening, he felt his breathing more and more difficult. He reached for the radio mike(话筒), trying to call the mini-bus center, but his words were hardly understandable. Signals(信号) were also poor that far out. He knew a rescue team was on 24-hour duty at the Amherst Fire Department’s north station. So his best chance was to make a run for it.
Rushing down the mountain, Allen tried not to panic(惊慌), focusing his mind on each sharp turn. He was almost through the last of them when he felt sure he was going into shock. Just then he reached for the radio mike again.
“Call fire station,” he shouted, concentrating to form the words. “Emergency. Beesting. Emergency. There in ten minutes.”
    “Five-ten,” the center replied.
Hold on, Allen thought. Keep your eyes open. Breathe. Keep awake.
At last he reached the station. Two firemen ran out. Allen felt their hands grasp(抓住) him before he hit the ground. You made it, he thought.
    24. According to the passage, wasps are more likely to attack when _______.
    A. there are huge noises B. strangers are approaching

    25. Allen didn’t know that if stung by wasps again, he would _______.
    A. have no after-effects B. surely lose his life
    C. suffer from sharper pain D. become more sensitive(敏感的)
    26. Allen failed at his first attempt to send his message to the mini-bus center because _______.
    A. his radio equipment was poor B. he was unable to speak clearly
    C. he was in a state of shock D. no one was on duty
    27. Which would be the best title for the passage?
    A. Allen, A Helpless Driver B. Wasps, Bloody Killers
    C. War Against Wasps D. A Race Against Death

    C
Downing the last drop of an expensive famous brand H2O as well as remembering to throw the empty bottle in the recycling bin(垃圾桶), makes you feel pretty good about yourself, right? It shouldn’t.Even when the bottles are recycled, there are all kinds of other consequences (后果) of swallowing(吞咽) bottled water, says Melissa Peffers, the air-quality program manager for Environmental Defense.
The bottles are often filled in faraway lands, then shipped from abroad, and storedin refrigerators at your local store. Compare that with the influence on environment of turning on your tap, filling a glass, and drinking up!
Anyone who is choosing bottled water for health reasons is misguided, says Peffers, “Most bottled water is just tap water.” And what comes out of your tap is carefully monitored (监管) to follow the strict rules. Consider another fact that bottled water is surprisingly expensive, especially when compared with the alternative(替代品), which is almost free, and it is hard to believe that America’s desire for bottled water seems impossible to satisfy, reaching nearly 30 billion bottles a year.
“My parents’ generation never had bottled water,” says Isabelle Silverman, an Environmental Defense legal adviser. She has made a commitment(投入,信奉) to going bottle free. “You don’t need to fetch it home from the store, and it’s cheaper,” she adds.
Bottled water’s role as a status(身份) symbol needs to change, Peffers points out. So when a waiter at an expensive restaurant offers “And what’s your drink?” that’s no reason to forget your conviction(信念). “Don’t be afraid to say, ‘I’ll have tap.’ Say it loud enough that the other tables nearby can hear you,” Peffers says. “And then spend that money on a dessert.”
    28. The underlined sentence “It shouldn’t.” in the first paragraph suggests that people _______.
    A. shouldn’t feel good about finishing the water in the bottle
    B. shouldn’t feel pleased withdrinking an expensive brand H2O
    C. shouldn’t be content withdrinking only bottled water
    D. shouldn’t be satisfied with just recycling empty bottles
    29. According to the author, tap water is _______.
A.healthier than bottled water B. morel likely to be polluted
    C. as safe as bottled water D. less convenient than bottled water
    30. The underlined part “going bottle free” (in Para. 4) means “_______”.
    A. providing free water containers(容器) B. making bottled water free
    C. recycling use water bottles D. giving up bottled water
    31. Why does Peffers ask people to say “I’ll have tap.” Loudly?
    A. To advise them to set an example for others to follow.
    B. To encourage them to save the money for one more dessert.
    C. To remind them to be aware of their social status.
    D. To persuade them to speak confidently in public.

    D
Think about this: which would you prefer to have with you at any given moment -- your cell phone or your wallet? Soon you may be able to throw your wallet away and pay for things with a quick wave of your smart phone over an electronic scanner(电子扫描仪).
In January, Starbucks announced that customers could start using their phones to buy coffee in 6,800 of its stores. This is the first pay-by-phone practice in the U.S., but we’re likely to see more wireless payment alternatives as something called near field communication(NFC)gets into America’s consumer(消费者) electronics. Last December, some new smart phones which contain an NFC chip were introduced to the public.
Already in use in parts of Asia and Europe, NFC allows shoppers to wave their phones a few inches above a payment terminal(终端), a contact-free system built for speed and convenience. But before NFC becomes widely adopted(采用) in the U. S., a few problems need to be worked out, like who will get to collect the profitable transactionfees(交易费). Although some credit card providers have been experimenting with wave-and-pay systems that use NFC enabled credit cards, cell phone service providers may try to make their way into the point-of-sale(POS)market.Three big cell phone service providers have formed a joint venture(合资企业)that will go into operation over the next 15 months. Its goal is “to lead the U. S. payments industry from cards to mobile phone.”
The other big NFC matter, apart from how payments will be processed, is security, For instance, what’s to stop a thieffrom digitally pick pocketing you? “We’re still not at the point where an attacker can just brush against you in a crowd and steal all the money out of your phone,” says Jimmy Shah. A mobile security researcher, “Users may also be able to set transaction limits, perhaps requiring a password to be entered for larger purchases(购买).”
Still uneasy about this digital-wallet business? Keep in mind that if you lose your smart phone, it can be located on a map and remotely disabled. Plus, your phone can be password protected. Your wallet isn’t.
    32. What is probably to happen in the U. S. ?
    A. The growing of cellphone companies. B. The increase of Starbucks sales
    C. The disappearance of credit cards. D. The popularity ofpaying by phone.
    33. The NFC technology can be used to________ .
    A. ensure the safety of consumers B. collect transaction fees easily
    C. make purchase more convenient D. improve the quality of cellphones
    34. Three cellphone service providers form a joint venture to__________.
    A. strengthen their relationship B.sell more cellphones
    C. get a share in the payments industry D. test the NFC technology
    35. According to the passage, what can users do if they lose their smart phones?
    A. Stop the functioning of their phones. B. Set up a password.
    C. Get all the money out of their phones. D. Call off large purchases.

M: Well, there's some good news on the radio. You probably can wear shorts tomorrow.
    Text 6
    W: Harry, let's play some ping-pong today.
M: I'd love to play a set or two, but my right arm hurts. I've decided to stop playing ping-pong until it feels better.
W: Well, how about going skating?
M: I'd like to, but my knee hurts, too.
W: Harry, stop making excuses! You're just lazy.
M: No, I'm not! You know, there's a basketball match on TV today. Let's just stay home and watch it.
W: OK. You stay, and I'll play with Helen.
    Text 7
W: What do you want to do tonight?
M: How about going to the cinema? I should be home from work at 5:45. Then we can go out and eat before we see a film.
W: What do you want to see?
M: There's a good art film at the Green House Cinema.
W: Let's see…it starts at 6:15. I don't think we can get there in time to see the beginning. How about the action
film at the New State Cinema? It starts at 6:50. Perhaps the 7:00 one at the UME Cinema is even better. It stars Jackie Chan.
M: OK, that's fine. I like him, too.
    Text 8
M: Hey, Lucy. Do you have some time to talk about next week's trip with me?
    W: Sure, Dave.
M: OK. So, we're leaving on Monday from Hartsfield International Airport, and returning on Friday. Do we  take ourselves to the airport? Maybe we need to book a taxi, or just go by bus.
W: No, we don't have to. The company car will pick us up and take us there.
    M: Oh, that's good. When?
W: Our flight leaves at 11:00 a.m., so they should pick us up between 8:00 and 9:00 a.m. Besides, the company pays for our trip, including hotel and food.
M: How much will that be?
W: Well, New York is a pretty expensive city. So, each of us will get $200 a day.
M: Oh, OK. Thanks for telling me that.
    W: You're welcome.
    Text 9
W: Please sit down. Let's see…you're Mr. Smith. Is that correct?
    M: Yes. John Smith.
W: And you're interested in this job?
M: Yes, I am. I'll graduate from college the coming June. My major is Chinese.
W: I see. Have you ever done any work in this field?
M: Yes, I used to be a tour guide for Chinese travellers.
W: Good. Now, how much money do you expect to have for a year?
M: From what I've read, it seems that a starting pay would be around $12,000 a year.
W: Here, you would start at $10,500 for the first year…a kind of training period. Then you would go to $15,000.
M: That sounds fair enough. What do you think are the chances for me to get a job here?
W: Well, I'm talking to three people today and four tomorrow. We'll be hiring two people. You'll hear from us
sometime next month. Good luck! And thanks for coming in today.
    Text 10
M: Well, I'd love to share with you my personal opinions on city life and life in small towns. I grew up in a
small town until I was 18 and then moved to a big city, so I have experienced the good and bad sides of both.
I never thought that I would like living in a big city, but I was wrong. After ten years of living in one, I can't
imagine ever living in a small town again. Surely small towns and big cities both have some problems in terms of transport. In a small town, you have to own a car to make life comfortable. You can't get around without one because there isn't any kind of public transport. Big cities generally have heavy traffic and expensive parking,
but there you have a choice of taking public transport, which is cheaper than driving. So, if you don't have a car, you'd better live in the city. I also love the exciting life in big cities. I can always enjoy a lot of films, concerts, and other wonderful shows. However, these things are not common in small towns. The final thing I like about
large cities is that you can meet different kinds of people. However, you seldom find such a variety of people in a smaller town. I think that living in an area where everyone was just like me would quickly become dull. Of  course, safety should be considered, and that's one area where small towns are better than big cities. Still, I would rather be a bit more careful and live in a large city than to feel safe but dull.
