Several days ago, I went to my aunt’s home and saw my cousin who is studying English linguistics(语言学)in a college. He showed me his learning materials. Here are two pages of it.
Nice
Generally speaking, the word “nice” is quite an expression of praise(赞扬).However, back in the late 12th century, if someone said you were “nice”; it was far from saying good wards about you.
Very long ago, “nice” was used to mean “foolish” and “stupid”. That sounds more like the kind of words that would start a fight, not put a smile on someone’s face. Later on in the 13th century, “nice” came to near “shy and nervous”. During the 14th century; it even meant “being careful”. But finally in the 18th century, it changed to the kinder meaning we know today, an ever since then, people have been using it in a lovable way.
Sad
All of us get sad from time to time. It’s a usual part of life. A loved one passes away. We expect too much progress in an exam. Or the store is out of our favorite drink. These are all things that can make us sad.
However once upon a time, “sad” had a very a different meaning. Back in the 14th century, it was the perfect word if you had eaten too much food at dinner.
Through the years, the meaning of “sad” changed to “ heavy” and then “tired”, Interestingly, when “sad” took on its present meaning, it was actually used instead of “unrot” an old English word that was the opposite of “rot” that meant “cheerful” or “glad”.
Now I know at some point in history, the meanings of some common words that we see every day meant something much different. The English language is developing(发展)all the time.
21. When did “nice” come to mean “shy and nervous”?
A. In the late 12th century. B. In the 13th century.
C. During the 14th century. D. In the 18th century.
22. The underlined word “these” refers to (指代) the following except that _________.
A. a loved one passes away
B. we expect too much progress in an exam
C. the store is out of our favourite drink
D. we have eaten too much food at dinner
23. The purpose(目的)of the passage is to tell us _________.
A. the meanings of all words are different at some point in history
B. my cousin learns English well because of his learning materials
C. we should know about all the different meanings of words in history
D. the meanings of some words are changing because language is developing
B
Scientists around the world are racing to create and test vaccines(疫苗)to help protect people against the novel coronavirus. They are making progress, but it will be quite a while before any vaccines are ready.
There are many different ways to make vaccines. At least l15 different vaccines for the novel coronavirus are being developed around the world right now. Many of them may not work or may have side effects that can be dangerous. That is why testing is very important.
Before a vaccine is ever tested on humans, it’s first tested on animals to make sure it seems safe. Testing the vaccine on humans is done in several different phases(阶段). In Phase 1, a small group of people are given small amounts of the vaccine to see if it has any bad effects. Phase 2 still tests the vaccine’s safety, but it’s mainly a test to see if the vaccine seems to work. If Phase 2 goes well, the vaccine can begin Phase 3. During Phase 3, the vaccine is tried on a much larger group of people to see how well it works.
Because of the serious and worldwide impact (影响)of the novel coronavirus, there is huge pressure to develop a working vaccine quickly. It normally takes seven or more years to develop a safe vaccine that works well. Now drug companies are hoping to create working vaccines in 12 or 18 months.
But health experts also warn that rushing too much could be dangerous. A vaccine with harmful effects could cause more problems than it solves.
24. According to the passage, the scientists who are making vaccines are _________.
A. hard-working and careful B. patient and easy-going
C. kind and curious D. caring and brave
25. Which of the following is TRUE?
A. There are only three phases in testing vaccines.
B. Working vaccines must be created in a short time.
C. Vaccines have already been developed.
D. Rushing too quickly in creating vaccines may bring more problems.
26. What’s the best title of the passage?
A. Rush for a Vaccine B. Fight against the Disease
C. Protect People against the Virus D. Create Working Vaccines

Tara: Nicole, I have a problem.
Nicole: What kind of problem?
Tara: I have a job interview tomorrow, and I heard that the boss will ask to see my Facebook profile. I’m not comfortable with that.
Nicole: That’s illegal in some countries, like Canada. Can you refuse?
Tara: I want to, but I’m afraid that if I do, I won’t get the job!
Nicole: I guess I see the boss’s point. Looking at a candidate’sFacebook page will tell him a lot about the person’s life and personality.
Tara: That’s true. Most of my life is on Facebook. My profile could tell him about my hobbies, my interests and what my friends think of me. I find the idea of showing a boss that much personal information disturbing.
Nicole: Companies run background checks on possible employees all the time. And this is just another way for him to see if you’re trustworthy. Besides, I’ve seen your Facebook page, and you don’t have anything to hide.
Tara: Maybe not, but my friends might still post things on my Facebook page that make me look bad.
Nicole: I think the boss will probably realize the differences between your posts and your friends’ posts.
Tara: He might, but I’m also worried that something the boss sees on Facebook could be misleading. For example, I wore a really crazy costume to my friend’s party last week. I wouldn’t want him to think I always do strange things like that.
Nicole: Yeah, but I don’t think the boss would assume that one picture shows how you always act. I’m sure he’ll be pretty cautious about drawing conclusions too quickly based on Facebook.
27. How does Tara find the idea of showing a boss that much personal information?
A. She thinks it great trouble. B. She has decided to refuse it.
C. She is quite pleased with it. D. She has no idea of it.
28. What does Nicole want to express by saying “I guess I get the boss’s point”?
A. Nicole wants to help Tara get more reasons why the boss did so.
B. Nicole has just understood the boss’s real purpose.
C. Nicole would like to be a friend indeed.
D. Nicole will check Tara’s personal information for the boss.
29. How can we understand the word “candidate’s”?
A. a person that has won something B. a person who has long experience
Ca person with a record of failing D. a person who is running for a position

Teenagers need to eat nutritious(有营养的)food while they’re still young so that they will grow up to be healthy adults. Therefore, it is necessary for school cafeterias(食堂)to provide healthy food. With this in mind, the government has introduced a new food safety regulation(规定)that will improve nutrition and health standards in schools.

The regulation also suggests that parents should eat with students at school in order to provide advice on food safety and nutrition. Schools must find out food safety problems and solve them in a timely manner.
If a school is caught buying low-quality food or failing to report food safety incidents (事件), the people in charge of the school will be warmed, fired or handed over to law enforcement (执法机关), the regulation says.
Parents across China have become increasingly angry about food safety incidents in schools, according to The Beijing News.
The most recent example occurred in March at the Chengdu No.7 High Development School. Parents posted videos and photos of moldy(发霉的)food that was served in the school’s cafeteria, China Daily reported. The school’s principal was eventually fired.

For many years the school students have to fnish some homework during their winter and summer holidays. But with the fast development of the Internet, some students have found a new way to deal with their homework recently. Instead of finishing their homework by themselves, they ask the Internet for help.
Since most of the holiday homework is the same from school to school, this makes it possible for some people to sell the homework answers on the Internet. Usually one must pay about 50 to 100 yuan for the answers for one subject of the homework. A survey shows that 90% of the students complain their homework is too much and they don’t want to do it by themselves.
To solve the problem, some schools have stopped using the standard homework and turned to other forms of homework. As for students, they must remember “No pains, no gains”. If today they pay for their homework answers, perhaps one day they will pay more for their laziness.

Very long ago “nice” was used to mean “foolish” and “stupid”.
However, once upon a time, “sad” had a very a different meaning.

【56题答案】
【答案】例文
Good books are valuables. Among all the books I’ve read, the book I’d like to share with you is The Old Man and the Sea, written by an American writer Ernest Hemingway. This book tells about a fisherman who is lucky enough to catch a huge fish at sea, but finds it hard to take it home. On the way back, he has to fight against the shark and the sea.
What I like most about the book is that the fisherman never gives up when meeting with difficulties. I still remember the well-known sentence from the book: Man is not made for defeat.
A man can be destroyed but no defeated. The fisherman’s spirit encourages me most. We can do almost anything if we never give up.
