Roberta, Peter and Phyllis lived in a large house in London. Father worked hard in a government office. He was never angry and always ready for a game. Mother was almost at home, ready to play with the children, and help them do their home-lessons.
These three lucky children always had everything they needed: pretty clothes, good fires, a lovely playroom and a dog called James. They had a happy life, but they did not know how happy till the pretty life in the large house was over.
Peter had a toy engine and it broke. After dinner, Peter showed Father the engine. Father looked it over and promised to do it on Saturday.
At that moment two men came to see Father. Minutes passed. Father’s voice came out from the study loud and angry.
More time passed. Then Mother came in and said, “Father’s been called away-on business.”
A week after their father went away, their mother said, “Now, we’re going to move to the country. A pretty little white house, called Three Chimneys.”
The family started packing: clothes, plates, candles and also tables and chairs. “We seem to be taking all the ugly things,” said Roberta.
“We’re taking the useful ones,” said Mother. “We’ve got to play at being poor for a bit.”
Peter said joyously, “I do like moving! I wish we moved once a month.” Mother laughed and said, “I don’t like moving!”
As she turned away, Roberta saw her face. She never forgot it.
“Oh, Mother,” she whispered, “how I love you! You are brave enough to laugh when you’re feeling like that!”
Then they took a train to Three Chimneys. No one knew how long they had been in the train when Mother woke them up.
They stood in the cold night air on the dark platform. At that moment they didn’t know how important the station and the trains would become to them. They didn’t know they were going to be the railway children.

It can be annoying when you go somewhere where there is no Wi-Fi and no mobile phone signal. How can you get online? A spaceflight company called Space-X might have the solution—its Star-Link satellite network.
The company recently launched 60 satellites into space that will be added to the network. That launch brings the network’s total number of satellites to 895, according to CBS News. The company hopes to eventually put as many as 12,000 of these satellites into orbit (轨道), which was first announced in January 2015, is to provide users with high-speed space-based internet access (接入) from any point on earth.
“We’re really talking about something which is, in the long term, like rebuilding the internet in space,” Space-X said when announcing the project.
So how does it work? Satellite internet works by using large spacecraft that move very far above Earth. These spacecraft receive information from base stations on Earth and then beam (发送) the information back down to users.
But these spacecraft are so far away that signals are slow and weak. Star-Link solves this problem by using many small satellites that can communicate with each other and move closer to Earth, making signals stronger and faster.
It’s a big plan but also one that is looking more possible with every launch. A town in Washington state recently used Star-Link while helping local people rebuild after a huge wildfire. Richard Hall, an IT expert who helped with the rebuilding, said he was impressed with the service.
“I have never set up any tactical (战术的) satellite equipment that has been as quick to set up and anywhere near as trusty, “Hall told CBS News.
27. Which is not a necessary condition to run Star-Link?
A. Satellites can connect with each other.
B. More satellites need launching into space.
C. Satellites should keep closer to Earth.
D. Satellites must move as quickly as possible.
28. Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. The total number of network’s satellites will be 895.
B. Base stations on Earth can send information to users.
C. We can get online much faster with the help of Star-Link.
D. Star-Link helped the Washington town put out the wildfire.
29. Which of the following word best describes Hall’s attitude (态度) to Star-Link?
A. Doubtful. B. Patient. C. Confident. D. Worried.
D
The clothes you wear. The food you eat. The color of your bedroom walls. Where you go and how you get there. The people you hang around with. What time you go to bed. What do these things have in common? You’re asking. They’re just a few examples of many hundreds of things that your parents controlled for you when you were a child.
As a kid, you didn’t have a say in everything; your parents made decisions about everything from the cereal you ate in the morning to the pajamas you wore at night. And it’s a good thing, too—kids need this kind of protection and assistance because they aren’t mature enough to take care of themselves and make careful decisions on their own.
But finally, kids grow up and become teens. And part of being a teen is developing your own identity (身份认同)—one that is separate from your parents’. But as you change and grow into this new person who makes your own decisions, your parents have a difficult time adjusting (调整) .They aren’t used to the new you yet—they only know you as the kid who had everything decided for you and didn’t mind.
In many families, it is this adjustment that can cause a lot of fighting between teens and parents. And issues like the type of friends you have or your attitudes to partying can cause bigger quarrels, because your parents still always want to protect you and keep you safe, no matter how old you are.
The good news about fighting with your parents is that in many families the arguing will lessen as parents get more comfortable with the idea that their teen has a right to certain opinions. It can take several years for parents and teens to adjust to their new roles, though. In the meantime, focus on communicating with your parents.
Sometimes this can feel impossible—like they just don’t see your point of view and never will. But talking and expressing your opinions can help you gain more respect from your parents and you may be able to reach compromises (和解) that make everyone happy. For example, if you are willing to clean your room in order to stay out an hour later. Keep in mind, too, that your parents were teens once and that in most cases, they can relate to what you’re going through.
30. A lot of fighting breaks out between teens and parents because ________.
A. parents aren’t used to losing control of kids
B. teens like to have everything decided for them
C. parents get angry at teens not respecting them
D. teens are eager to develop their own identity
31. In the author’s opinion, parents control teens in order to ________.
A prevent them from having their own ideas
B. protect them from being hurt
C. make them respect parents in the family
D. make sure that children have a good future
32. Which of the following teenagers’ questions does the author try to answer?
A. What do parents control their children for?
B. When do parents take care of their children?
C. How do I get rid of my parents’ control?
D. Why do I fight with my parents so much?

My earliest memories involve sitting with my dad in his study every night when he came home and put his personal things away. He would hand me his green comb(梳子) and say: “Be a good girl and help Daddy clean it, OK?” At age five this task brought me such joy. Every time I returned the comb, he smiled at me, and put it on top of his wallet.
Two years later, Dad left his sales job and started his own business. I started primary school. That was when things started to change. Dad’s business wasn’t doing so well. He didn’t come home often.
Now I’m 28. Last year I graduated from college and got a job. Dad’s business has already got back on track(轨道). Two years ago, dad came home early. I helped him carry his bags into his study. When I was leaving, he said: “Hey, would you like to help me clean my comb?” It was a new brown comb. He used to have the green one, then a pink one that he gave to me as a present but took back when his green one broken.
When I returned the clean comb and he smiled at me, I noticed something different. He has wrinkles(皱纹) next to his eyes when he smiles, yet his smile still heartwarming, the smile of a father who just wants a good life for his family.
Dad carefully puts his comb on top of his wallet. After so many years, he still puts his personal things in the same way. I guess something will never change. And for that, I’m glad.
