The chief problem in dealing with foreign motorists is not so much remembering that they are different from you, but that they are largely variable. Cross a frontier (边境) without adjusting and you can be in deep trouble.
One of the greatest gulfs separating the driving nations is the Atlantic Ocean. Or rather, it is the mental distance between the European and the American motorist, particularly the South American motorist. Compare, for example, an English driver at a set of traffic lights with a Brazilian.
Very rarely will an Englishman try to anticipate (预先准备) the green light by moving off. You will find the occasional someone who watches for the yellow light to come up on the set of lights. However, he will not go until he receives the lawful signal. Brazilians view the thing quite differently. If, in fact, they see traffic lights, they regard them as a kind of roadside decoration.
The natives of North America are much more disciplined. They show this in their addiction to driving in one lane (车道) and sticking to it—even if it means settling behind some great truck for many miles.
To prevent other drivers from falling into wrong ways, American motorists try always to stay close behind the vehicle in front which can make it impossible to make a real lane change. European visitors are always falling into this trap. They return to the Old World still waving their arms in disappointment because while driving in the State in their cars they kept failing to get off the highway when they wanted to and were swept along to the next city.
However, one nation above all others lives cautiously by its traffic regulations — the Swiss. In Switzerland, if you were simply to anticipate a traffic light, the chances are that the motorist behind you would take your number and report you to the police. There are slight regional variations among the French, German and Italian speaking areas, but it is generally safe to assume that any car bearing a CH sticker will be driven with a high degree of discipline.
24. How do American drivers behave on the road according to the passage?
A. They run the red light sometimes.
B. They drive close behind other drivers.
C. They care little about the traffic light.
D. They start their car at the yellow light.
25. Which people take the traffic light most seriously?
A. The Swiss. B. The Brazilians.
C. The English. D. The French.
26. The passage is mainly developed by ____.
A. analyzing causes B. describing changes
C. making comparisons D. pointing out similarities
27. Which part of a newspaper is the passage probably taken from?
A. Culture. B. Business.
C. Entertainment. D. Geography.

The Jewish (犹太人) family-had-just finished supper and the woman had placed the dishes in the sink. The kitchen was quite damp and even gloomier than in the main room. It was their third apartment since the start of the war, they had abandoned the other two in a hurry. The woman came back into the room and sat down again at the table. The 3-year-old boy sat with his back straight, his eyes fixed on his father, but it was obvious that he was so sleepy that he could barely sit up.
The man was smoking a cigarette. His eyes were blood-shot and he kept blinking in a funny way. This blinking had begun soon after they fled the second apartment.
It was late, past ten o'clock and they could have gone to sleep, but first they had to play the game that they had been playing every day for two weeks. Even though the man tried his best and he moved very quickly, the fault was his and not the child’s. The boy was. marvelous. Seeing his father put out his cigarette, he opened his blue eyes even wider. The woman, who didn't actually take part in the game, stroked the boy’s hair.
“We’ll play the key game just one more time only today. Isn’t that right?” she asked her husband.
He didn't answer because he was not sure. They were still two or three minutes off. He arose and walked towards the bathroom door. Then the woman called out softly, “Ding-dong.” At the sound of the bell ringing so musically from his mother’s lips, the boy jumped up from his chair and ran to the front door, which was separated from the main room by a narrow corridor.
“Who’s there?” he asked.
The woman, remaining in her chair, shut her eyes tight as if feeling a sudden, sharp pain.
“I’l1 open up in a minute, I’m just looking for the keys,” the child called out. Then he ran back to the main room, making a lot of noise with his feet. He ran in circles around the table, pulled out one of the sideboard drawers, and slammed it shut.
“Just a minute, I can’t find them, I don't know where Mama put them,” he yelled, then dragged the chair across the room, climbed onto it, and reached up to the top of the shelf.
“I found them!” he shouted triumphantly. Then he got down from the chair, pushed it back to the table, and calmly walked to the door and opened it.
“Shut the door, darling,” the woman said softly. “You were perfect.”
The child didn’t hear what she said. He stood in the middle of the room, staring at the closed bathroom door.
“Shut the door, the woman repeated in a tired flat voice. Every evening she repeated the same words, and every evening he stared at the closed bathroom door.
At last it opened. The man was pale and his clothes were streaked with lime and dust. He stood there, eyes blinking in that funny way.
“Well? How did it go?” asked the woman.
“I still need more time. He has to look for them longer. I slip in sideways all right, but then...It’s so tight in there that when I turn...And he’s got to make more noise-he should stamp his feet louder.”
The child didn't take his eyes off him.
“Say something to him,” the woman whispered.
“You did a good job, little one,” he said mechanically.
“That's right,” the woman said, “you're really doing a wonderful job, darling. You act just like a grown-up. And you do know that if someone should really ring the doorbell when Mama is at work, everything will depend on you? And what will you say when they ask you about your parents?”
“Mama's at work.”
“And Papa?” He was silent.
“And Papa?” the man screamed in terror. The child turned pale.
“And Papa?” the man repeated more calmly.
“He’s dead,” the child answered and threw himself at his father, who was standing right beside him, but already long dead to the people who would really ring the bell.

C. Because he was too anxious to find the key to open the door with.
D. Because he met many barriers on his way to where the key was.

Antioxidants (抗氧化剂) in coffee are thought to help protect against stroke — but too much must raise blood pressure, which increases the risk, according to Japanese researchers. Similarly, green tea could also be beneficial for preventing the shocking event, caused when a blood vessel(血管) in or serving the brain is blocked.
The study looked at the drinking habits of more than 83,000 healthy adults, aged 45 to 74, whose health was tracked for 13 years on average. They found that people who drank at least one cup of coffee a day had about a 20 percent lower risk of stroke, compared to those who rarely drank it. To get an equal effect, about four cups of green tea a day were required.
All results were adjusted to take into account differences between the groups in age composition, gender, smoking, alcohol, weight, diet and exercise. Dr. Yoshihiro Kokubo, lead author of the study, published in the journal Stroke, said, “The regular action of drinking tea and coffee, largely benefits cardiovascular (心脏血管的) health.”
Their results for coffee were similar to that of “study of studies”, presented at a European conference, which found that one to three cups a day was associated with a 14 percent reduction. For three to six cups, there appeared to be a similar but weaker association, but there was no benefit from drinking six or more.
Exactly why coffee and green tea appears to lower stroke risk is unclear, although antioxidants are thought to be at work. However, the science is by no means cut and dried. Caffeine raises blood pressure, and there have been indications that too much coffee can raise stroke risk because of this.
Dr. Dale Webb, from the Stroke Association said, “We welcome this study which suggests that the benefits of antioxidants in coffee and green tea may offset the potential harm from caffeine.” He thought, the results show higher consumption of green tea and coffee might reduce the risks of stroke. “We would like to see further research to understand these findings,” he said.
32. What may lead to a stroke according to the first paragraph?
A. Higher blood pressure. B. Drinking a cup of coffee a day.
C. Blocked blood vessels in the brain. D. Antioxidants.
33. What can we infer from the passage?
A. The study mainly focuses on middle-aged people.
B. Drinking one cup of coffee a day benefits health.
C. Those who seldom drink coffee are healthier.
D. Drinking tea contributes to stroke.
34. What is the attitude of Dr. Dale Webb toward this study?
A. He saw more findings of this study unsatisfiedly.
B. He understood the difficulty of this study.
C. He appreciated the achievements of this study.
D. He was disappointed to find no following research.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Drinking coffee raises blood pressure B. Drinking tea reduces stroke
C. Drinking coffee equals drinking tea D. Drinking tea or coffee properly matters
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
What makes you cry? Being moved by a sad movie, waving a loved one off, or getting emotional after splitting up with your partner can all cause tears to roll down our faces. 36 When you think about it, shedding tears from your eyes can cause embarrassment or confusion. But it seems to be an automatic reaction when we get sad or upset. 37 However, the feeling is the same – your cheeks puff up, your eyes tighten and before you know it, tears are streaming down your face. Some of us may weep a little while others might cry like a baby.
A study in the UK in 2017 found that women admitted they cry 72 times a year. This was, on average, more than men. Adam Rutherford, lead researcher, says that the result has been pretty much consistent with previous research. 38 Are they just more embarrassed about showing their true feelings? The debate continues.
One place where we experience emotional and tearful outbursts is in the workplace. 39 Someone might be stressed with a heavy workload. And, as therapist Joanna Cross put it, “crying is often a build-up of frustration and undealt-with situations and it’s a bit of a final straw moment.” She describes how someone might start weeping when they’re just asked to make a cup of tea. Actually, their stress has accumulated to the breaking point.
But crying in the office or elsewhere can be an effective stress reliever. It can actually make you feel better. 40 Crying your eyes out shows others how you feel, so perhaps it’s a crying shame that more of us, particularly men, don’t cry more often.
A. Then how do we cope with it?
B. This can be where emotions run high.
C. People reach their breaking point in different ways.
D. We all have the power to cry, but is that a good thing?
E. Maybe it dissolves or clears the negative feelings you’ve had.
F. What brings about this reaction differs from person to person.
G. But does this mean men don’t get as upset or emotional as women?
