More than a third of small towns in Georgia lost population in the last year alone, highlighting the challenges of reviving rural areas. New census (人口普查) estimates show that Camilla fell below 5,000 residents. Sparks fell below 2,000, and Milan fell to 661 residents for a loss of 7% of its population. All three towns are in South Georgia.
Many of the young people in these communities graduate from high school and don’t come back. “They go to college, whatever, they don’t come back,” said David Bridges, head of its Center for Rural Prosperity and Innovation in Tifton.
Meanwhile, Georgia’s cities are growing, having no problem drawing people from small towns and other cities. Atlanta grew more than 1% in the past year and is now nearing the half-million-resident mark.
The trend of people moving from rural to urban areas is hardly a new one — it’s been going on worldwide for more than a century. But continued population losses have raised questions about whether rural areas can do anything to reverse the tide.
Rural residents can face a number of challenges including access to good jobs, transportation and health care. Manufacturing jobs have dried up in many places, while modernization and new technology means fewer people are needed for farming. And many people are deciding to have smaller families than was typical a century ago.
“The older generation is dying, the younger generation is moving away, and because there are perceived to be fewer business opportunities, financial opportunities, etc. It’s very challenging to get inbound population.” Bridges said.
Demographers (人口学家) expect the shift from rural to urban to continue. But there are some bright spots in rural America still. Jackson County near Athens was recently named one of the fastest-growing counties in the nation by the Census Bureau. Amazon opened a large fulfillment center there a couple of years ago. And Young Harris, near the Georgia-North Carolina border, has grown by more than 80% since 2010.
24. What happened to the small towns mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A. Their sizes grew rapidly. B. Their population declined.
C. They drew more residents. D. They raised challenges to locals.
25. Which of the following best explains “reverse the tide” underlined in Paragraph 4?
A. People move from rural to urban areas.
B. Small towns draw people from cities.
C. Rural areas develop their economy quickly.
D. Population continue to grow in urban areas.
26. Why is David Bridges quoted?
A. To offer more evidence. B. To draw a conclusion.
C. To show his contribution. D. To give part of the reasons.
27. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Jackson County is the best town in the US.
B. Rural towns will keep growing to larger ones.
C. Others will follow the lead of these bright spots.
D. There can be measures to help rural towns grow.
B 25. B 26. D 27. D
根据第一段中的“More than a third of small towns in Georgia lost population in the last year alone, highlighting the challenges of reviving rural areas.”
根据第四段“The trend of people moving from rural to urban areas is hardly a new one — it’s been going on worldwide for more than a century. But continued population losses have raised questions about whether rural areas can do anything to reverse the tide.”
根据第五段中的“Rural residents can face a number of challenges including access to good jobs, transportation and health care.(农村居民可能面临许多挑战,包括获得好工作、交通和医疗保健)”和倒数第二段““The older generation is dying, the younger generation is moving away, and because there are perceived to be fewer business opportunities, financial opportunities, etc. It’s very challenging to get inbound population.” Bridges said.(“老一辈人正在死去,年轻一代正在离开,而且因为人们认为商业机会、金融机会等越来越少,所以吸引外来人口非常具有挑战性。”Bridges说)”可知,Bridges的话佐证了农村人口流失和难以吸引外来人口去农村的原因。故选D项。
27. 推理判断题。根据最后一段“Demographers (人口学家) expect the shift from rural to urban to continue. But there are some bright spots in rural America still. Jackson County near Athens was recently named one of the fastest-growing counties in the nation by the Census Bureau. Amazon opened a large fulfillment center there a couple of years ago. And Young Harris, near the Georgia-North Carolina border, has grown by more than 80% since 2010.(人口学家预计,从农村到城市的转变将继续。
C
“Beauty isn’t about having a pretty face,” begins a motivational quote. “It’s about having a pretty mind, a pretty heart, and a pretty soul. Oh, and pretty nails!”
That may be Angela Peters’ motto. Last July, Peters, rolled her wheelchair into a nail salon (沙龙) at the Walmart shopping center in Burton to have her nails done. But Peters, who has cerebral palsy (脑瘫), was turned away. The salon told her that they were afraid it would be too difficult to properly paint her nails given that her hands kept shaking. What was meant to be a day of beauty for Peters was now a disappointment.
A Walmart cashier about to go on her break happened to see this. Ebony Harris recognized Peters as a Walmart regular. “She’s just like everyone else. She wants to look pretty. So why can’t she?” Harris said.
Harris approached Peters. “Do you want me to do your nails?” she asked.
A smile spread across Peters’ face. “Yeah!” Harris led Peters into the supermarket, where they shopped for nail polish. They settled on a color that would catch every eye. They then made their way into a neighboring Subway, found a table for two, and started. Harris gently took Peters' hand into hers and carefully began painting her nails. “She moved her hands a little bit, and she kept saying she was sorry,” Harris said. “I told her, ‘Don’t say that. You’re fine.’ She makes me look at life and appreciate it much more than I have.”
Watching it all with surprise and admiration was Subway employee Tasia Smith. Smith was so taken by the scene that she wrote about it on Facebook. “She was so patient with her,” she wrote. “Thanks to the Walmart worker for making this beautiful girl's day!”
28. Why does the author mention the quote in the first paragraph?
A. To compare different views. B. To introduce the topic of the passage.
C. To show the importance of beauty. D. To share his opinion about beauty.
29. The nail salon refused Peters' request because .
A. she had to use a wheelchair B. they were too busy to serve her
C. she couldn't keep her hands still D. they hadn't the color she wanted
30. Which of the following words can best describe Harris?
A. Brave and generous. B. Careful and fair-minded.
C. Honest and considerate. D. Patient and warm-hearted.
31. What can be inferred about Tasia Smith from the last paragraph?
A. She thought highly of Harris’ behavior.
B. She wrote a thank-you letter to Walmart.
C. She regretted not lending Peters a helping hand.
D. She misunderstood Harris’ relationship with Peters.
B 29. C 30. D 31. A
根据第一段““Beauty isn’t about having a pretty face,” begins a motivational quote. “It’s about having a pretty mind, a pretty heart, and a pretty soul. Oh, and pretty nails!””
根据第二段中“The salon told her that they were afraid it would be too difficult to properly paint her nails given that her hands kept shaking. What was meant to be a day of beauty for Peters was now a disappointment.”
根据第三段中“Ebony Harris recognized Peters as a Walmart regular. “She’s just like everyone else. She wants to look pretty. So why can’t she?” Harris said.(Ebony Harris承认Peters是沃尔玛的常客。“她和其他人没什么两样。她想看起来漂亮。为什么她不能做美甲呢?”Harris说)”以及最后一段中““She was so patient with her,” she wrote. “Thanks to the Walmart worker for making this beautiful girl's day!”(“她对她很有耐心,”她写道。“感谢沃尔玛的工作人员让这个美丽的女生节变得如此美好!”)”由此可推知,Harris帮助了被美甲店拒绝的Peters,答应给她美甲,而且非常有耐心。Harris有一副热心肠且非常有耐心。故选D。
31. 推理判断题。根据最后一段中““She was so patient with her,” she wrote. “Thanks to the Walmart worker for making this beautiful girl's day!”” 故选A。
D
Boston wants to be smarter. The city has taken advantage of technologies to become more responsive to its residents’ needs. But technology alone is not sufficient to make today’s cities liveable. Boston has discovered that it also needs to reach the old-fashioned low-tech community and integrate that technology with city life.
Kris Carter rolled out Boston’s smart city program in 2014. It started with an App that residents could download to report locations where sidewalks needed repair. The city sorted out those reports and ranked them in a database, which repair crews used to prioritize their work.
The system worked beautifully, except for one problem: most of the alerts(警报) came from wealthier neighborhoods, where the concentration of smartphone - equipped residents was highest. “The complaints from the App didn’t always correlate with the greatest community need for repairs,” explains Carter.
Carter’s group has moved away from the model common to many smart city initiatives of letting tech-savvy (精通技术的) residents drive the process. Instead, they run meetings to find out what problems people in different neighborhoods care about solving. When it came to sidewalks, Boston introduced a second method of collecting repair tips, hiring people to get out and walk the city’s 1,700 miles of sidewalks to take notes on their condition.
Whether using low-tech or high-tech approaches, says Carter, to stay smart, a city needs to continually reassess its options to spot opportunities to improve residents’ lives. Take the sidewalk repair program, walking on the streets was proved a useful, if inefficient way to prioritize repair needs. But last year the group found that walkers’ mobile phones could be tracked as they moved along the streets, and that data could be analyzed to identify sidewalk routes which are most often used by neighborhoods.
“Combined with our other sidewalk information, that gave us an even better way to predict where faster repairs would do the most good,” says Carter, “We’re really always looking for whatever mix of approaches best solves the problem.”
32. What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A. The citizens' life. B. The city’s reputation.
C. The city's management. D. The benefits of technology.
33. What problem did Kris Carter’s team meet when carrying out their program?
A. They faced many technical obstacles.
B. They couldn’t serve all residents well.
C. They were not supported by residents.
D. They were annoyed by being short-staffed.
34. Which of the following might Kris Carter most agree with?
A. Maximizing the benefits of technology.
B. Mixing approaches for solving problems.
C. Giving full play to the power of residents.
D. Letting tech companies be a leading role.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. A Smart City: More Than Just Tech
B. A City with Intelligent Facilities
C. Joint-effort in City Construction
D. The Modernization of a City
C 33. B 34. B 35. A
根据文章第一段“But technology alone is not sufficient to make today’s cities livable. Boston has discovered that it also needs to reach the old-fashioned low-tech community and integrate that technology with city life.”
由第三段最后一句“The complaints from the App didn’t always correlate with the greatest community need for repairs, explains Garter.” 根据第四段“Carter’s group has moved away from the model common to many smart city initiatives of letting tech-savvy (精通技术的) residents drive the process. Instead, they run meetings to find out what problems people in different neighborhoods care about solving”可知,卡特的团队已经摆脱了许多智能城市倡议的共同模式,即让精通技术的居民来推动这一进程。
由最后一段最后一句“We're really always looking for whatever ever mix of approaches best solves the problem.”
故选A。
Calligraphy (书法) is the art of writing letters beautifully. These days, a lot of writing is done on computers and phones. 36 The best thing about calligraphy is having fun doing art with pen and ink, and not worrying too much about what you create. It’s about making marks on paper, and then practicing the letter forms over and over. 37 Eleanor Winters, author of Calligraphy for Kids, says the best way to learn the art is to join a local calligraphy club. If your school doesn’t run one, ask if they could start one up. “It’s easy and inexpensive to start learning. 38 I would recommend beginning with markers(马克笔)and paper,” says Winters.
Normal marker pens with a pointed tip are perfect to start, so that you can learn the shapes of the letters “ 39 They can make the thick- and-thin lines that are characteristic of traditional calligraphy,” says Winters. In terms of paper, lined is much easier to write on because it’s easier to control the height of the letters. “Practice and patience are both important,” says Winters. “You’ll learn much better if you take time to practice each step before you move on to the next one.”
40 It provides a beautiful way to express yourself, whether you are making a birthday card, creating a letter or poem, or writing in your diary. It’s also a very relaxing and quiet activity, making for a nice break from the stresses of the school day.
A. All you need is a pen, ink and paper.
B. Practicing calligraphy has many advantages.
C. After that, you could use calligraphy markers.
D. Like anything, the more you practice, the better you will do.
E. The next important thing is to know how to hold the marker.
F. So calligraphy is a way to celebrate writing artistically on paper.
G. Modern calligraphy is quite different from traditional calligraphy.

It was my first day of school. I loved school: the smell of chalk and colored crayons and having my own desk that was just my size. However, there was one big problem with school: Mildred.
Daily when I walked the short distance home after school, Mildred would hit me and scare me. I was absolutely terrified of her. She had failed first grade and was a year older than me. Mildred didn’t have any friends, so she seemed to concentrate on making enemies. Because I was one of the smallest children in first grade, she had selected me as her number one enemy.
As soon as the dismissal bell rang each day, my heart started to pound and I blinked fast so I wouldn’t cry.
Pretty soon my mother figured out something was wrong at school. I didn’t want to tell her about Mildred. Mother continued to question me, and I finally sobbed out the whole story. I begged not to go to school and didn’t sleep much that night. The next morning she said, “Marion, I’m going to walk up the hill with you today. I believe we’ll see Mildred.” Mildred walked from way across down to school. She never bothered me on the way to school, only afterward.
“Oh, mama, please don’t do that! Don’t say anything to Mildred. It will just make her mad. Let me stay home by myself. Please, mama.”
“Hurry and get dressed, Marion.” Her voice was gentle, but quite firm.
“Ple-e-ease, mama.”
“Trust, Marion. I have a plan.”
We bundled up against the bitter cold wind and stared out. Maybe we wouldn’t see Mildred, I hoped. But my mother had this confident look. I knew the look well, and I had a sinking feeling that we would see Mildred and that mother would use her “plan”.
Just as we were turning around at a corner when we spotted Mildred. We waited a few moments as she approached us. “Hello, Mildred.” my mother said.
1. 所续写的短文词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1:
Mildred stopped, frozen as still as a statue.

Paragraph 2:
Mildred chewed on her bottom lip and then nodded.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1:
Mildred stopped, frozen as still as a statue. Her hands and face were bright red and the oversized coat hung open with only two buttons. Mother stooped down, rapidly buttoning her coat. “I’m Marion's mother. I need your help, Mildred.” Mildred looked intently at my mother. “Marion doesn't have any sisters. She sort of needs a special friend at school. Would you be her friend?”
Paragraph 2:
Mildred chewed on her bottom lip and then nodded. “Oh, thank you! I just know you are someone I can depend on.” Then she hugged Mildred long and hard. I found Mildred smiling! I’d never seen her smile before. We walked up the hill each day after school together, and pretty soon we were talking, laughing and sharing secrets. I started calling her “Mil”, and then others did too, even Miss Edna. She always sat with me at lunch. My mother usually included something in my lunch especially for Mil-even notes of gratitude. Mildred smiled a lot now. She was getting good grades too, and didn’t stuff her papers inside her desk anymore. I knew my mother’s plan had worked and I’ve learned that the plan works in all kinds of impossible situations: “Love is patient and love never fails.”
