For most people, graduation is an exciting day. But my graduation day was not.
I remember that weekend two years ago. Family and friends had traveled from across the country to watch our class walk across that stage. But like everyone else in my graduating class, I had watched the economy(经济状况)turn from bad to worse in my fourth year of university. I knew my small university town couldn’t offer me any opportunities, so I drove to southern California to find work. But what I thought would take a week lasted for two weeks, and then four weeks, and I found myself in the same spot I was in before.
You know that feeling when you wake up and you are full of fear? Fear about something you can’t control. You hope that everything that has happened to you so far is just a bad dream.
So what did I do to stay calm? I wrote. Something about putting words on a page made everything seem a little clearer – a little brighter. Something about writing gave me hope. If you want something enough … sometimes a little hope is all you need!
I turned my scary feelings into a children’s book – about a surprising hero who simply refused to (拒绝)give up on his dream.
Then one day, without a writing degree or contacts in the writing world – just a lot of hard work – I was offered a publishing deal(出版约稿)for my first book! After that, things slowly began to fall into place. I was offered a second book deal. Then, a few months later, I got an interview with a big company and got a good job.
It takes time, but just hold on – things can change when you don’t expect it.
5. The author didn’t think her graduation day was exciting because _____.
A. her family and friends didn’t come
B. she got a bad score in her senior year
C. she didn’t get her university degree
D. she worried about how to make a living
6. What happened to the author after four weeks?
A. She got a job offer in California.
B. She still couldn’t find a job.
C. She drove back to her hometown.
D. She found a job in her university.
7. How did the author feel while writing her first book?
A. Calm. B. Scared. C. Excited. D. Fearful.
8. What does the author try to tell us?
A. Try to get as much education as you can.
B. Don’t fear what the future will be like.
C. Life can change for the better if you just hold on.
D. You might not get the job you want at first.
C
How can middle school students help to politics and society? Three girls at No 1 Middle School of Ann Kway, Fujian province, are trying to save lives by writing a proposal (提案) to the Model Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC模拟政协).
Chen Lu, Wu Xinna and Liao Siqi, all 17 years old, wrote a proposal to set up more automated external defibrillators (AEDs自动体外除颤仪) in public places. AEDs are medical devices that help those who experience sudden cardiac attacks (心脏病发作). They’re easy enough to use so that anyone can use one on a patient before an ambulance arrives.
“The number of sudden cardiac deaths in China each year is about 544,000. And according to international standards, there should be 100 AEDs for every 100,000 people. But in China, there are less than 0.5,” Chen said.
The three girls spent six months working on the proposal. After doing fieldwork at train stations, shopping malls and other public places, they brought up four suggestions.
One is to set up AEDs step-by-step in different places. For example, schools could receive them first, followed by other places with lots of foot traffic. Another suggestion is to train more people to use AEDs. Organizations like the Red Cross Society of China can show people how to use the devices in schools and companies. TV stations and social media can provide video instructions on how to use AEDs. Tech companies could even make AED apps or mini programs to help people find the devices in an emergency (紧急情况).
9. Why do the students write the proposal to the CPPCC?
A. To bring up suggestions. B. To save people with a heart condition.
C. To set up medical organization. D. To give people better life.
10. What’s the Chinese for the underlined word “fieldwork” in Paragraph 4?
A. 田间工作 B. 实地考察 C. 工厂车间 D. 野战工事
11. Which is not mentioned about training more people to use AEDs?
A. The Red Cross Society of China. B. Social media.
C. Text books D. Tech companies

Each summer, 200 teenagers and 50 adults are invited to join the program. They live together for eight weeks as members of a special work group. Everyone works for seven hours each day. There are a few free hours each day and weekends are free, too. During the free hours, some of the teenagers learn to take photos or paint pictures. Others sit around and talk, sing, or dance. 14 When people live together, rules are necessary. In this program, the teenagers and adults make the rules together. High school entrance exams mainly focus on basic subjects, such as math and Chinese. But by 2022, these exams will also feature subjects like music and art.
At a press conference (发布会) held by the Ministry of Education (MOE) on Oct 16, a senior official said that all high school entrance exams should include fine arts testing by 2022. He added that 12 cities in six provinces have started the practice, _________ Nanjing and Qingdao, with scores varying from 10 to 40 points, Xinhua reported.
This is being done to encourage primary and secondary schools to provide more fine arts classes. They should cover subjects such as music, painting, handwriting, dance, drama and opera.
Learning about the fine arts can help students learn to appreciate artistic beauty, which is good for their mental (心理) health, according to the MOE.
However, not everyone agrees. Some parents say that students already have heavy basic workloads (学习压力), and that adding new testing material would make things worse. It was also pointed out that not every student will be talented enough to be good at these subjects.
In response to this, Jiangsu province authorities (主管部门) said that the tests will be based on basic knowledge that comes from the students’ textbooks. The additional (额外的) workload will not be difficult and shouldn’t put too much pressure on students, China Business Herald noted.

44. Because the tests will be based on basic knowledge that comes from the students’ textbooks.
五、写作(15分)One possible version
(一)
In my opinion, high school entrance exams should include fine arts testing.
First, middle school students not only need to master the basic knowledge, such as Chinese, maths and English, but also need to know about some knowledge of fine arts. I think education should help students develop in an all- round way.
Second, learning about the fine arts can help students learn to appreciate artistic beauty, it is good for students' mental health. When we are tired or unhappy wherever we are, if we are good at painting, we can paint a picture, if we do well in dancing, we can have a dance, or it's a good idea to watch an opera.
So I support it.
(二)
In my view, I don't agree with adding new testing subject like music and arts.
First, now students need do a lot of homework every day, they also take part in all kinds of after-school tutoring, so adding new testing material will make students have heavier basic workloads.
Second, not every student will be talented enough to be good at these new testing subject, adding new testing subject will give them much pressure at school, although the tests will be based on basic knowledge that comes from the students' textbooks.
