My husband and I had just opened up a pet sitting business earlier that year. Our customers had slowly risen from three to thirty a month. We were busy through those hot summer months, driving between visits. Our work was strictly done at the pet owner’s home. It was almost too busy for the two of us, but we were making good money!
We asked pet owners new to our business to phone two weeks ahead so we had enough time to meet the owners and pets at their homes and make any following meetings before the owner leaves.
One day, we decided to take on a new customer just two days before they would leave. We met the family, filled in a form, and spent some time with their dog, Hercules. He playfully jumped on us and touched our hands and arms using his tongue. The family laughed as he did this, showing us that he was very loving.
Two days later I appeared at the house, alone. I came up to Hercules and said hello happily. I filled up his water bowl and cleaned any messes he made. Meanwhile, he was so lovely sitting beside. I thought this would be the good picture to send to the owners as usual. After the light and “click” sound went off, Hercules rushed at me. I didn’t know what had just happened until I noticed the drops of blood. I ran out and did the only thing — calling my husband.
Then I went to neighbors for help. My husband arrived after ten minutes. The helpful neighbor and my husband led Hercules back into his pen (圈). Then my husband and I took off to the hospital.
I must have looked like I was shot when I walked into the hospital. The nurses quickly moved me to a room. I asked the doctor in a weak but playful manner, “Am I going to die?” he replied, “Finally.”

“It’s a big hammer to crack a nut.” This is how one angry parent described the recent crackdown(强制措施)by London police on parents who drop their kids off at school by car. Yes, you read that correctly—the very mode of transportation that many American schools insist—the only safe way to deliver kids to school is now being criminalized in the United Kingdom.
The decision to fine any vehicles seen dropping off or picking up kids with in a particular zone of east London comes from city councillors’(议员) long-term efforts to make the area safer and less crowded. They say they’ve been trying for years “to encourage sensible driving and parking”, but in vain. Neighborhood residents complain frequently about their driveways being blocked by illegally parked cars for 15 minutes or more, often while they’re trying to get to work, and the streets are long overcrowded.
Now the rules have changed. Some parents are angry. Angie Baillieul is a mother who made the “big hammer” comment and says the crackdown is “way over the top.” The nearest drop-off point for her six- year-old is now a five-minute walk from the school. Others are happy with the decision, severe though it may seem. Councillor Jason Frost said :
“Traffic has significantly reduced, and more children are now walking to school, which is a great outcome. I would rather have complaints that we are slightly inconveniencing parents than hear that a child had been seriously injured because nothing was done.”
I witness daily the chaos created by these in-town drivers, when I walk my own kids to school. There’s a parking lot overflowing with vehicles and a slow-moving train of cars moving in circles, many filling the air with harmful smokes. Meanwhile, the conversations around child over-weight and the importance of daily physical activity continue to stand out in schools.
    8. Why is Angie Baillieul opposed to the new rule?
    A. She is often fined by London police. B. She will lose her job as a school driver.
    C. She has adapted to the American practice. D. She thinks it adds inconvenience to her son.
    9. Why has the new rule been made according to Jason Frost?
    A. On account of massive complaints. B. Because of heavy traffic jams.
    C. Owing to safety concern. D. Due to air pollution.
    10. What can be seen after the crackdown is carried out?
    A. Less daily chaos. B. Favor from all people.
    C. More over-weight children. D. Complaints from neighbors.
    11. What is the main idea of the text?
    A. Parents attempt to resist a school rule.
    B. London police cause widespread anger.
    C. American schools care about kids7 safety.
    D. Different voices are heard on a new traffic policy.
D 9. C 10. A 11. D

根据文章第二段“The decision to fine any vehicles seen dropping off or picking up kids within a particular zone of east London comes from city councillors’ (议员) long-term efforts to make the area safer and less crowded.”(对在伦敦东部某一特定区域内接送孩子的车辆进行罚款的决定,是市议员们为了使该地区更安全、更少拥挤而做出的长期努力的结果。) 故选A。

You know the saying “You’re as young as you feel." Well, there may be some truth to that, according to researchers at Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Ellen Langer, a Harvard psychologist who studies how the mind influences the body, and colleagues reviewed the scientific literature for evidence that a person’s perception of their age might influence their health. They published their results in the journal Perspectives on Psychological Science.
In one study that Langer led, 47 women had their hair done. The women who thought their new hairdos made them look younger did look younger to objective observers, who were shown before-and-after pictures. The women who thought they looked younger also showed a drop in blood pressure. Another study involving 4,421 men found that those who became bald at a relatively young age were more likely to get cancer and heart disease than men who did not. Similarly, another study involving 2,017 men found that those who lost their hair early were more likely to develop heart disease. “We believe that the feelings associated with being older than one’s real age account for some of these health outcomes,” the researchers wrote.
The researchers also described studies that found that women who had children later in life were more likely to be healthier and live longer than those who had children early, which they attributed to the fact that these mothers tend to spend more time with younger women. Similarly, people who marry younger partners tend to live longer than those who marry older partners, according to other studies.
Taken together, the research “supports the general mind-body hypothesis (假说) that when a younger mind is prepared, a younger body can accompany it.” While the mechanism(机制) remains unclear, the researchers figured that suggestions associated with aging can “make one unconsciously or consciously aware of old age and set in motion a series of physiological processes that can have real effects on short-term and long-term health."
    12. What’s the author’s attitude towards the research results?
    A. Negative. B. Indifferent.
    C. Supportive. D. Objective.
    13. Which of the following statements is true according to paragraph 3?
    A. Blood pressure is highly related to hairdos.
    B. Getting cancer or heart disease is the cause of hair losing.
    C. Feeling older than real age may be tied to health problems.
    D. The women who love hairdos look younger than those don’t.
    14. It can be inferred from Paragraph 4 that ________.
    A. often staying with younger people can benefit people's health
    B. the younger one of a couple lives much longer
    C. a younger mother is more likely to live longer
    D. people who want to live longer need to marry
    15. The passage mainly tells us that ________.
    A. Getting bald too early is not good for health
    B. People’s feeling of their age may have an effect on their own health
    C. Feeling younger to a couple is very important to their health
    D. Women had better give birth later in their life
D 13. C 14. A 15. B

The researchers also described studies that found that women who had children later in life were more likely to be healthier and live longer than those who had children early, which they attributed to the fact that these mothers tend to spend more time with younger women. Similarly, people who marry younger partners tend to live longer than those who marry older partners, according to other studies.“研究人员还描述了一些研究,这些研究发现,晚育的女性比早育的女性更健康,寿命更长。研究人员认为,这是因为晚育的女性与年轻女性相处的时间更长。同样,根据其他研究,与年轻伴侣结婚的人往往比与年长伴侣结婚的人寿命更长。”可知经常和年轻人呆在一起能有益于人们的健康。根据句意可知选A。
    【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段第一句You know the saying "You're as young as you feel." Well, there may be some truth;你知道这句话:“你感觉自己有多年轻,你就有多年轻。”嗯,也许有些道理;根据最后一段the researchers figured that suggestions associated with aging can “make one unconsciously or consciously aware of old age and set in motion a series of physiological processes that can have real effects on short-term and long-term health.”
We believe that the feelings associated with being older than one’s real age account for some of these health outcomes,“我们认为,与实际年龄有关的情绪导致了一些健康问题,”可知感觉比实际年龄老可能与健康问题有关。
When you underline and add notes to a text, when you ask yourself questions about its contents, you are establishing your understanding of what you are reading. ____16____. A summary is a record or account of main points of a text. It forces a reader to understand the general idea of a piece rather than to just scan through each word and sentence written.
To summarize is to condense (压缩)a text to its main points and to do so in your own words. To include every detail is neither necessary nor desirable. ____17____— the main idea and its necessary supporting points, which in the original passage may have been mixed with less important material.
____18____. They are not the same thing. An analysis is a discussion of ideas, techniques, and/or meaning in a text. A summary, on the other hand, does not require you to respond to the ideas in a text.
If a text is organized in a linear (线性的) fashion, you may be able to write a summary simply by writing the major points in your words from the beginning of the text to the end. However, you should not assume that this will always be the case. ____19____. They may not state the thesis or main idea immediately at the beginning, but rather build up to it slowly, and they may introduce a point of development in one place and then return to it later in the text. ____20____.
    A. They are not shortened texts
    B. Different writers give different ideas
    C. Not all writers use such a straightforward structure
    D. Instead, you should only cover the most important information
    E. In these cases, you should reconstruct the text in an organized way
    F. Many students make the mistake of confusing summary with analysis
    G. When you write a summary, you are showing your understanding of it
G 17. D 18. F 19. C 20. E
【点睛】本篇第1空难度较大,抓住空处上文的句式特点以及下文提到的关键词是关键,根据空前的“When you underline and add notes to a text, when you ask yourself questions about its contents, you are establishing your understanding of what you are reading.”可知,当你在课文下划线并添加注释时,当你问自己有关文本内容的问题时,你正在建立你对阅读内容的理解,再根据空后的“A summary is a record or account of main points of a text. It forces a reader to understand the general idea of a piece rather than to just scan through each word and sentence written.”
