Being thirteen has certain prblems that nly anther thirteen-year-ld wuld understand. The biggest, I think, is learning t get alng well with adults. I have fund that when dealing with grwn-ups, it is wise t remember tw things.

2. Never use yur head
Fr instance, ne day just befre supper, my mther sent me t the stre fr a laf f whle-wheat bread. They didn’t have any. When I tld my mther, she said, “Well, what kind did yu get? ” I tld her I didn’t get any. She lked as if I had just annunced that I was leaving hme fr gd. “Fr gdness’ sake! ” she said, “If they hadn’t had whle-wheat, yu shuld have gt smething else! Why dn’t yu use yur head? ”
Nt lng after that, she sent me t the stre fr red ilclth. They didn’t have any, s I bught seven yards f purple. I thught it was pretty. Mther didn’t. And in the future, if yu can’t get what I send yu fr, dn’t get anything. ”
See what I mean?
There are ther things that seem a little strange, t. If my father ges ut fr the evening, he tells me t “lk after” my mther and sister. But if the family ges ut, and I want t stay hme, my father wn’t let me. He desn’t feel cmfrtable if I am hme alne. That means I am ld enugh t “lk after” my mther and sister but nt ld enugh t “lk after” myself.
Anther prblem is what t d when yu trip ver the cat and land with yur head in the refrigeratr, causing a large lump(肿块) t appear just ver the right eyebrw. In that case, yur father culd feel free t say with a few chice wrds. Yur sister culd shed(流出)enugh tears t dampen the whle rm. Yur mther culd, and prbably wuld, d bth. But yu? Yu are thirteen and can’t d anything! Yu are t yung t curse(咒骂), and “big bys” dn’t cry. S yu just stand there lking mre stupid than usual.
