This could end the worries of many parents fearful for their children’s safety on the roads.Until now the County Council has prepared to provide bus services for children living more than three miles from their schoolor sometimes less if special reasons existed. Now it has decided that if a group of parents ask for help in organizing transport it will prepare to go aheadprovided the arrangement will not lose money and that children taking part will be attending their nearest school. The new scheme is to be tried out this term for children living in Milton who attend Impington School. The children live just within the three mile limit and the Council has said in the past it will not undertake to provide free transport to the school. But now they have agreed to organize a bus service from Milton to Impington and backa plan which has the support of the school’s headmaster.Between 50 and 60 parents have said they would like their children to take part. Final calculations have still to be carried outbut a Council official has said the cost to parents should be less than 6.50 a term. They have been able to arrange the service at a low cost because there is already an agreement with the bus company for a bus to take children who live further away to Impington. The same bus would now just make an extra journey to pick up the Milton children. The official said they would get in touch with other groups of parents who in the past had asked if transport could be provided for their childrento see if they would like to take part in the new scheme.8The children the Council runs buses for now are those________.Awhose parents are worried about themBwho would have had to walk otherwiseCwho could not walkDwho have to travel more than 3 miles9Taking part in the Council’s trial scheme are children who________.Alive in Milton and go to Impington SchoolBlive in Impington and go to Milton SchoolClive in Milton and go to Milton SchoolDlive in Impington and go to Impington School10The new bus service will run________.Aon morning journey to school onlyBin connection with an existing serviceConly for children living more than three miles awayDonly in wet weather11Agreement to pay for the new bus service has been obtained from________.Athe school’s headmasterBthe County CouncilCthe bus companyDthe parents BThe Law to Keep the Oil Industry under ControlThe Norwegian Government is doing its best to keep the oil industry under control. A new law limits exploration to an area south of the southern end of the long coastlineproduction limits have been laid down (though these have already been raised)and oil companies have not been allowed to employ more than a limited number of foreign workers. But the oil industry has a way of getting over such problemsand few people believe that the Government will be able to hold things back for long. As a Norwegian politician said last week“We will soon be changed beyond all recognition.”Ever since the warthe Government has been carrying out a program of development in the area north of the Arctic Circle. During the past few yearsthis program has had a great deal of successTromso has been built up into a local capital with a universitya large hospital and a healthy industry. But the oil industry has already started to draw people southand within a few years the whole northern policy could be in ruins. The effects of the oil industry would not be limited to the northhowever. With nearly 100 percent employmenteveryone can see a situation developing in which the service industries and the tourist industry will lose more of their workers to the oil industry. Some smaller industries might even disappear altogether when it becomes cheaper to buy goods from abroad. The real argument over oil is its threat to the Norwegian way of life. Farmers and fishermen do not make up most of the populationbut they are an important part of itbecause Norwegians see in them many of the qualities that they regard with pride as essentially Norwegian. And it is the farmers and the fishermen who are most critical of the oil industry because of the damage that it might cause to the countryside and to the sea.12The Norwegian Government would prefer the oil industry to________.Aprovide more jobs for foreign workersBslow down the rate of its developmentCsell the oil it is producing abroadDdevelop more quickly than at present13The Norwegian Government has tried to________.Aencourage the oil companies to discover new oil sourcesBprevent oil companies employing people from northern NorwayChelp the oil companies solve many of their problemsDkeep the oil industry to something near its present size14According to the passagethe oil industry might lead northern Norway to________.Athe development of industryBa growth in populationCthe failure of the development programDthe development of new towns15In the southone effect to the development of the oil industry might be________.Aa large reduction on unemploymentBa growth in the tourist industryCa reduction in the number of existing industriesDthe development of a number of service industries CGu Zhaodi, 60had taken water for granted for years. In factno one in the beautiful lake city of WuxiJiangsu Province had bothered to spare a thought on water. But all that changed dramatically overnight last month when taps in the city ran dry. Due to a bluegreen algae (藻类) outbreak in Taihu LakeChina’s third largest freshwater lake and the source of drinking water for 4 million Wuxi residents (居民)water from the city’s taps became dark and smelly.“I can’t believe there is no water for drinkinglet alone cooking and washing,” said Gu.The lake was blanketed with the algaegiving off a strong smell of rotting meat. A stone thrown into it took a long time to sink. Experts said that algae usually boom because of hot water and rich chemicals like phosphor () in the water.“High temperature and a lack of rain in the past few months helped the growth of algae” said Zhang Lijun, an official from the State Environment Protection Administration.“However, pollution from human activity should be most blamed for the disaster.”Taihu Lake is surrounded by many small factorieswhich sprang up in the 1980s.In the 1990smany foreignfunded (外资的) companies joined in. The industries prospered (繁荣)Wuxi has grown into one of the wealthiest cities in East China. But that came at the price of pollution. The lake was treated like a waste dump (垃圾堆)with factories emptying industrial waste and untreated sewage(污水)into it.Althoughafter the government’s effortlife in the city has gone back to normalthe oneweek crisis(危机)rang a bell for the government and local people.“It’s time to rebuild the beauty of natureor our life will be at risk”said Gu.“A safe environment comes first. Economic growth will be nothing without fresh water to drink and clean air to breathe” said China Daily.16The following that can help the blue green algae grow is________.Alow water temperatureBless chemicals in the waterCheavy rainDplentiful water and sunshine17What can we learn from the passage?AThe oneweek disaster has made the local people realize the importance of building a beautiful city.BIt is human activity rather than the algae that is to blame for the water pollution.COnly when the environment is safe and friendly can man live a better and healthier life.DEnvironment should be taken into consideration first if a city plans to develop its economic.18Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?AWho Is to BlameMan or Algae?BWater Turned offCWater Pollution Troubled WuxiDAlgae Threatened Taihu Lake19The underlined phrase “sprang up” in the sixth paragraph means________.Adevelop quicklyBproduce goods quicklyCcome to lifeDgrow up 四、短文改错。 It was extreme cold last Monday morning. The next day, we got up early and preparing porridge at home. When we handed the cleaners the hot porridge and expressed us appreciation for their hard work, they looked a little surprising at first. And then they took the porridge and thanked us happily. Since it was very cold, we all felt warm at that moment.
