When something becomes fashionable very quickly, we say that it’s a “craze”. The latest craze is sometimes a style of clothes or a hairstyle. Sometimes it is a game or a TV program. In the 20th century a lot of crazes started in the USA and then became popular in other parts of the world. American youth culture has spread through tourism, TV, films, magazines and music videos.
One of the biggest crazes was the hula hoop(呼啦圈). Hula hoops are not popular now, but in the 1950s they were a sensation(轰动). An American company called Wham-O started to make plastic hoops as toys, and in the USA the company sold 100 million hoops in a year.
Frisbees were another Wham-O product(产品). Some people say that the idea started in the factory of the Frisbee Baking Company in Connecticut. Workers there threw metal pans to each other during their breaks. Two businessmen made a plastic type of the flying pans, and sold their products to Wham-O. They became a big business.
So businesses usually help to produce a craze. Yoyos were another example. In the Philippines, where its name means “comeback”, the yoyo was a popular toy in the 1920s. But it didn’t become a global craze until an American called Donald Duncan bought the idea and sold it to the world. Around 100 million people bought yoyos in 1962 and 1963.
Most crazes come and go, but sometimes they survive. When the big skateboard started in California in 1965, many parents and governments said that the boards were dangerous, and they were not allowed in some areas. But the boards became popular again and they are still an important part of youth culture today.
4. A “craze” means .

D. something that becomes very popular over a short period(时期) of time
5. Crazes are often started by .
A. teenagers B. businesses C. governments D. superstars
6. What fact does the passage provide?
A. All crazes in the world come and go quickly.
B. Skateboards are not allowed in most areas of America.
C. In the last century the USA introduced many new crazes.
D. Crazes have nothing to do with culture.

Bacteria Cafeteria
Every day, people use teeth to cut, tear, and chew food. They eat most of the food. But bits of food stick to their teeth. People’s mouths are filled with bacteria (细菌). They eat the bits of food. The bacteria increase and build up on the teeth. And they can quickly form a coating called plaque (牙斑).
The bacteria in the plaque produce acid (酸). More acid is created when someone eats food which has sugar or starch. Candy and cookie are sugary foods. Potato chips have starch. The acid from the bacteria goes to work on the teeth. Each tooth has a protective covering called enamel (釉质). It’s the hardest material in the body. But the acid is strong enough to eat through the enamel. This creates tooth decay (蛀蚀).
Next, the acid can work its way inside the tooth. Under the enamel is softer material called dentine. Acid quickly eats through the dentine, creating a hole called a cavity. Then the acid can reach the pulp ( 髓 ) inside the dentine. The pulp has blood vessels (血管) that feed the tooth. It also has nerves (神经). When the nerves get hurt, a person may feel a toothache.
A dentist should fix tooth decay. Bodies can repair broken bones but not decayed teeth. That’s because enamel and dentine aren’t living things. Dentists clean out the decay and fill the space with strong material.
But tooth decay should be prevented in the first place. People should visit the dentist twice a year. Dentists clean and examine the teeth. They can treat any tooth problems early. People should also take care of their own teeth. To remove bits of food, bacteria, and acid, people should clean them between their teeth at least once a day. They should also brush their teeth at least twice a day — even when they don’t feel like it!
7. The purpose of the article is to ____________.
A. explain how bacteria work B. give a talk on tooth health
C. advertise for a dentist hospital D. remind people to care about tooth health
8 What does acid do?
A. It makes teeth stronger. B. It eats through tooth enamel.

Some students think we can use mobile phones to search for information and watch news online at any time. We can also contact our family and friends with them. Besides, we can relax ourselves by listening to music and watching movies.
While others think differently. First, some students lose themselves in mobile phones all day. They seldom communicate with others face to face. Second, using mobiles phones too much is bad for our health. Third, some students play online games instead of studying. Some even can’t control themselves and play games in class.
In my opinion, we can use mobile phones in our studying time. But we must use them in the right way.
