1. I study by working with a group. 我通过小组合作的方式来学习。
【解读】by + v-ing结构是本单元的重点。by是介词,意思是“通过某种方式”。by还有其他意思,如:乘坐交通工具;在……旁边;被……;到……(时间)为止等等。常见短语有 by the end of在……结束之前,by the way顺便问一句,one by one一个接一个,by oneself独自,by mistake错误地,by hand手工。
【举例】
(1)I study English by watching English movies. 我通过看英语电影学习英语。
(2)I was allowed to go back home by 10 pm. 我曾被要求晚上10点之前回家。
(3)Do you often go to work by subway? 你经常坐地铁上班吗?

【解读】as well常用作状语,作“又;也”解,相当于too或also,常位于肯定句句末,无须用逗号与句子分开。too位于肯定句句末,其前常用逗号分开;also位于肯定句句中,常在be动词和助动词之后,行为动词之前;either位于否定句句末,其前常用逗号分开,有时也可不用。另外,as well as 用来表示同级比较,指“一样好”。

【解读】动词不定式to practice English with 作名词partner的定语,而且从逻辑上来讲,partner做with的宾语,介词with不可省略,也就是说“不定式+介词”结构修饰前面的名词时,该介词一般不可省略。

【解读】join意为“加入、参加”,表示加入党派、组织、俱乐部或团体,从而成为其中一员。join为瞬间动词,如要与一段时间的状语连用,应用延续性动词be in来替换。另外表“参加”的词汇:take part in表示参加竞赛、娱乐、游戏等活动。attend表示出席或参加会议、婚礼、报告或讲座等。
【举例】(1)He decided to join the army. 他决定参军。
(2)I have been in the Party for ten years. = I joined the Party ten years ago.
我已经入党十年了。
(3)Would you like to take part in the party? 你想要参加这个聚会吗?
(4)The headmaster was unable to attend the meeting. 校长不能参加这个会议。

【解读】whether 用作连词,意为“是否”,可引导宾语从句,可以和if互换,但二者仍有区别:(1)与or not连用时,只能用whether,不用if。(2)引导宾语从句,并且从句位于句首表示强调时,只能用whether,而不用if。(3)所引导的从句作介词宾语时,只能用whether不用if。(4)在动词不定式之前时,只能用whether不用if。
【举例】(1) I don't know whether they will come to help us. = I don’t know if they will come to help us. 我不知道是否他们来帮助我们
(2) I don't know whether or not they will be mad at us. 我不知道是否他们会生我们的气。
(3) Whether he will come I am not sure. 他来不来,我还不确定。
(4) I’m thinking of whether we should go fishing. 我在想我们是否该去钓鱼
(5) We haven’t decided whether to stay here. 我们还没有决定是否留在这儿。

【解读】pay attention to意为“注意;关注”,to在这里作介词,后接名词、代词以及动名词作宾语。常见的to用作介词的短语还有be used to习惯于,thanks to幸亏,look forward to盼望, put one’s mind to全神贯注于,hold on to坚持,be good to 对…友好。
【举例】You should pay attention to listening to your teacher carefully in class.

(2)I advise you to forget all about the sad story. 我建议你忘记这个悲伤的故事吧。
【练习】请用advice 和advise填空。

2. You should try to improve your English by …你应该通过……尽力提高你的英语。
【解读】try to do sth.“尽力做”= try one’s best to do sth.;try doing sth.“尝试做……”。英语中还有一些动词后接to do sth. 或doing 意思不一样。如forget / remember to do sth. 忘记/记着去做某事(现在还没有做),forget / remember doing sth. 忘记/记着曾做过某事(以前做过某事);stop to do sth. 停下来开始做某事(停下正在做的事,开始做另一事)stop doing sth. 停止做某事(停止正在做的事);
【举例】(1) He tried to climb the tree.他尽力爬那棵树。
(2) If no one answers the door, why not try knocking on the back door?
如果没有人开门,为什么不试试敲后门呢?
