Disrupted Schling Spells Wrse Results and Deeper Inequality
The first meeting between teachers in Mntpelier, Vermnt, befre the start f the autumn term is usually festive — 31 ver breakfast and cffee. This year they had t make d with an nline vide cnference. After a scramble in the spring (t set up nline learning, pack lunches fr pr pupils wh relied n them and 32 cmputers t thse withut them), the district plans t let yunger pupils return fr in-persn learning n September 8th. High schl will remain partly nline because the building is t small t allw enugh rm in between. The yung pupils wh can return will need t wear masks, keep their scial 33
and have temperature checks befre entering schl buses r buildings. Setting up these prtcls tk many 60-hur weeks ver the summer hlidays, says Libby Bnesteel, the superintendent.
Of the 50 largest schl districts in America, 35 plan t start the cming term entirely 34 . The pprtunity t cntrl the virus ver the summer has been lst, upending(颠覆) plans fr “hybrid” educatin (part-time in-persn instructin). This means mre than just child-care
35 fr parents. The cntinued disruptin t schling will prbably spell permanent learning lss, 36 hurting prer pupils.
“Achievement 37 will becme great achievement differences,” warns Rbin Lake, directr f the Centre n Reinventing Public Educatin, a research grup. Analysts at McKinsey, a cnsultancy, think that the 38 American pupil wuld suffer 6.8 mnths f learning lss if in-persn instructin des nt 39 until January 2021 (which lks pssible). Have yu ever been n scial media and seen yur favrite celebrity talking abut a prduct? These prmtins might nt be ttally randm, and are actually seen as a vital part f the marketing prcess. The questin is: Hw d scial media influencers ‘influence’ what yu buy?
Human desire fr status and making friends, cmbined with ur need t belng t a grup, makes us receptive t being ‘scially influenced’. Cmpanies ften use that desire t have a similar lifestyle t a celebrity we admire t hawk r launch a prduct. S, what d these prmtins actually d?
Firstly, they can be used t build brand awareness. A scial media influencer shuld have a strng understanding f the platfrm they perate n, and therefre can create engaging cntent that nt nly sticks t the brand image, but sparks their fllwers’ interests in a prduct they might never have seen befre.
Secndly, influencers can imprve a cmpany r prduct’s relatinship with their custmer base. Accrding t InMment’s 2018 US Retail CX Trends Reprt n custmer lyalty, 77% f buyers have been brand lyal fr mre than ten years. This is als true f 60% f millennials. A ppular celebrity can target key demgraphics(顾客族群)and talk r blg abut a prduct, which can create an instant and lasting bnd with the cnsumer.
Lastly, influencers can imprve custmer buying habits with seemingly ‘unbiased pinins’. We are mre likely t respnd t ‘peer recmmendatin’ than traditinal ads, meaning the fact we see an influencer as a ‘friend’ can make us less likely t be dubtful abut what we are seeing.
S, the next time yu see a celebrity talking abut a prduct, yu might want t cnsider that this culd be a carefully crafted marketing strategy designed t target yur cre needs. If yu find yurself examining a prduct yu’ve seen n scial media, yu may well have been influenced.
56. Why d cmpanies invite celebrities t launch prducts?
A. Because celebrities can imprve the cmpanies' public images.
B. Because celebrities want t make mre mney.
C. Because cnsumers like t share similarity with celebrities.
D. Because cnsumers can make friends with celebrities.
57. Accrding t the passage, which strategy is ften used by influencers?
A. Setting up peratin platfrms.
B. Sending gifts t custmers.
C. Taking advantage f their ppularity.
D. Recmmending prducts t their friends.
58. What des the underlined wrd unbiased prbably mean in the passage?
A. aggressiveB. bjectiveC. subjectiveD. supprtive
59. The passage is mainly abut __________.
A. hw scial media make ads
B. hw scial media influence ur lifestyle
C. hw celebrities earn fame
D. hw scial influencers affect ur buying

A MAGICAL PLACE
Theme parks? I just lve them. In a mnth r s, the UK’s finest will thrw their gates pen fr the new seasn t thrill us with their engineered delights. As usual, I will be the first persn inside. Yes, I may be a digital enthusiast, but t me there is nthing as irresistible r as thrilling as the full-n experience f spending a day in smene else’s imaginatin.
Dr. Carissa Baker, assistant prfessr in theme parks and strytelling at the University f Central Flrida, argued in 2018 that theme parks are gatherers and tellers f stries. Their distinct narratives start befre yu enter the park, are played ut in what yu experience there, and cntinue after yu’ve left. Hw d they d it? Sme believe it’s dwn t creative directin and narrative system design. But I call it like I see it: they use all the psychlgical tricks in my scial psychlgy textbks t get us t feel and act in the way that the peple behind the scenes fretell.
Everything in theme parks is manipulated(操纵). Everything is accunted fr. Whereas in the digital wrld, designers infer what we feel, these theme parks digest these emtins. A famus example is Disneyland’s Main Street USA, which yu walk dwn n first entering the park: the sets have been designed with frced perspective s the buildings appear taller and grander than they really are. Techniques like this are everywhere t be seen in the squares f Renaissance Italy and Gergian England t make the buildings seem bigger than they were. The mythical Main Street is made t feel larger and mre impressive, which gets visitrs excited when they enter the park—we are the her f Disneyland’s narrative. Nw that’s a pwerful trick.
The digital wrld is nwhere near as magical as these places are. Yes, digital designers can create smething ut f nthing with mathematics and electricity, but their best attempts are nly shrtcuts in tw-dimensinal space. All they have in their tlbxes are sight and sund. But in theme parks, digital is ut f place. Yes, behind the scenes there are data machines that are trying t track us t make ur experiences better and mre persnal. Except fr ne r tw ntable examples, digital tech isn’t being used t enhance ur time at the park in any practical way. It just gets in the way. And perhaps that is why I lve theme parks. Because when I’m there, I want t be prpelled(推动) by smene else’s visin, and give ver t the feeling.
The next killer app isn’t n yur device. It’s in the places that thrill us and cmpel us t keep ur phnes in ur pckets s we can truly experience them.
63.Frm the first paragraph we can cnclude that __________________.
A. engineers in the UK are full f imaginatin
B. the writer is enthusiastic abut digital devices
C. the writer finds theme parks charming and exciting
D. it takes much imaginatin t guess visitrs’ preferences
64.The writer fancies ging t theme parks in that ___________________.

B. they prvide a designed setting in which he is easily absrbed
C. the digital effect makes theme parks a wnderland full f magic
D. the psychlgical tricks they use make him feel manipulated

Step inside mst mdern cars and instead f all the dials and switches that used t clutter the dashbard(仪器板) yu are likely t find it dminated by a tuchscreen. Often there is mre than ne screen, and sme are bigger than thse n a laptp. But, thugh cnvenient, tuchscreens can als be dangerus distractins.
67 They recruited tw grups f 20 drivers. One cnsisted f regular users f Ggle's Andrid Aut while the thers were supprters f Apple CarPlay. Each participant cmpleted three 15-minute jurneys alng a set virtual rute using the labratry's sphisticated driving simulatr. On ne f these trips they had t carry ut tasks using nly the tuchscreen, which included navigating t a restaurant, playing a particular sng n Sptify (a music service), changing radi channels, getting the system t read ut a text message, and making a "hands-free" telephne call. 68 The third jurney was a cntrl, with n assigned tasks.
Whenever a red bar flashed n the windscreen the researchers measured hw lng it tk a driver t react by pulling the indicatr stalk(柄) t flash the car's lights. 69 Thugh the difference might be less than a secnd, at mtrway speeds this wuld result in an increased stpping distance f up t 25 metres.
Dr. Kinnear was, hwever, surprised by the amunt f time drivers' attentin was diverted by the series f glances needed t perate the screen. Amng the wrst utcmes were a mean f 20 secnds f cumulative glances using Andrid Aut t play a sng n Sptify, and f 16 secnds t set up the rute t a restaurant with CarPlay. 70 The researchers thus believe vice-activatin is a safer alternative that shuld be encuraged, thugh the sftware needs t be imprved.

When yu’ve finished yur studies at schl and cllege, d yu feel like a well-earned rest? If yu’re abut t embark n a curse at university, yu’ll want t recharge yur batteries, relax and have sme fun. A student, called Meg, said “I always want t spend a year ding smething prductive and smething that wuld just be gd fun.”
Ding smething prductive is exactly what students are being encuraged t d because ding mre purpseful things like wrk experience r charity wrk helps them acquire skills t use when cmpeting fr a place at university. It lks gd n their CV and ultimately makes them mre emplyable. Chris Rea, a Higher Educatin Services Manager, thinks “the experience f the gap year has becme actually much mre practical, partly t d with university participatin and emplyability skills develpment.”
While the benefits f taking a gap year are clear t see, sme students wrry they can’t affrd it. Anther student, Tm, thught a gap year was an ‘alien cncept’. He said “it wuld have been far t expensive and it's nt smething that I wuld have been able t rely n my parents fr.”
Fr thse wh d have the funds, a cmbinatin f wrking, vlunteering and travelling is undubtedly an amazing pprtunity. It increases cnfidence and independence, gives yu a chance t learn new crafts, and gives yu time t cntemplate whether university is right fr yu.
