The pupils of Grangetown High have been busy getting to know their newest and tallest classmate—a 7metertall giraffe outside their school.
The giraffe is a huge sculpture (雕像) made by a local artist.The school’s headmaster noticed the sculpture in the artist’s garden as he drove past one day,and thought it would be perfect for his school.“I knew everyone would love it,” he said,“because our basketball team is known as the Grangetown Giraffes,and they wear giraffes on their shirts.So I asked them to write a letter to the artist,asking how much it would cost to buy the giraffe.He was very kind and got it ready to deliver (递送) in six weeks—all for nothing!It was expected to arrive one Sunday morning,so that the pupils would see it when they got to school on Monday—at that time they had no idea that we were getting it.”
The artist,Tom Bennett,was a university professor (教授) of chemistry before he left that job in 2006 and only took up metalwork a couple of years ago.“I’ve always drawn pictures,” he said.“I can even remember doing it on my first day at school—I drew a horse.I wanted it to be the best horse picture ever,but I don’t think I succeeded.” Tom’s first metalwork was a bicycle for two that he and his wife could go cycling on together.“It was the most uncomfortable bike ever created,” he said,“so I gave up making bicycles and went into sculpture instead.”
Meanwhile the pupils at Grangetown High are very happy with their new classmate.“We’re going to hold a competition to give it a proper name,” said one girl.“Everyone likes the expression on its face,so perhaps that will give us some ideas.”

One part of the world is still largely unexplored.It is the deep sea.Over the years,many people have explored under the sea.But the first deepsea divers (潜水员) wanted to find sunken treasure.They weren’t really interested in studying the creatures of life there.Only recently have they begun to learn some of the mysteries of the sea.
It’s not easy to explore the deep sea.A diver must have a way of breathing underwater.He must be able to protect himself from great pressure (压力).The pressure of air is about 15 pounds on every square inch.But the pressure of water is about 1,300 pounds on every square inch!
The first diving suits (潜水服) were made of rubber.They had a metal helmet (头盔) with windows in it.The shoes were made of lead and weighed twenty pounds each!These suits let divers go down a few hundred feet,but they were no good for exploring the very deep waters.With a metal diving suit,a diver could go down 700 feet.Metal suits were first used in tine 1930s.
In 1927,a diver named William Beebe wanted to explore deeper than anyone had ever gone before.He was not interested in finding treasure.He wanted to study the creatures and plants of the sea.His friend invented a metal ball called the Bathysphere.It weighed more than 5,000 pounds,but in it Beebe went down 3,028 feet.He saw many things that had never been seen by humans before.

NEW YORK (Reuters Life!) —Parents wanting their children,particularly teenagers,to develop good eating habits should make sure they eat meals together,a new study suggests.
In one of the first longterm studies to look at the benefits of family meals,researchers at the School of Public Health at the University of Minnesota found that family meals have a great influence on adolescents (青少年) because they encourage healthy eating habits and good nutritional (营养的) choices.The study was published in the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior.
“These findings suggest that having regular family meals from early to middle adolescence has a marked beneficial effect on the development of healthful behaviors for youth,” said Teri L.BurgessChampoux,who worked on the study.
“The importance of shared mealtime experiences during this key developmental period should be emphasized (强调) to parents,healthcare providers and educators.”
The researchers examined information from Project EAT,a study that looked at which socioenvironmental,personal,and behavioural factors (因素) influence the eating habits of nearly 400 children.
The students completed a questionnaire (问卷) in 1998 and 1999 when they were 12 to 13 years old and another as middle adolescents five years later.
Regular family meals (five or more meals with all or most of the family per week) declined over time,the researchers said.
During the early teen years,60 percent of the children had regular meals with their family,compared to 30 percent during later adolescence.
Children who ate five or more meals a week together in both early and middle adolescence ate healthier meals with plenty of vegetables and foods rich in calcium,fiber and minerals.
