I was in a strange city and I didn't know the city at all and what is more, I could not speak a word of the language.
After my first day in the town center,I decided to lose my way on my second day, since I believed that this was the simplest way of getting to know the strange city.
I got on the first bus that passed, rode on it for several stops then got off and walked on. The first two hours passed pleasantly enough. In order to learn more about the city, I decided to walk back to my hotel for lunch. After walking for some time, I decided I had better ask the way. The trouble was that the only word I knew of the language was the name of the street in which I lived and even then I pronounced it badly.
I stopped to ask a friendly-looking newspaper-seller. He smiled and handed me a paper. I shook my head and repeated the name of the street and he put the paper into my hands. I had to give him some money and went on my way. The next person I asked was a policeman. The policeman listened to me carefully, smiled and gently took me by the arm. There was a strange look in his eyes as he pointed left and right and left again. I thanked him politely and began walking in the direction he pointed.
About an hour passed and I noticed that the houses were getting fewer and fewer and green fields were appearing on each side of me. I had come all the way into the countryside. The only thing left for me to do was to find the nearest railway station.

Do you know how to talk to others politely in English? Have a look at the following.
"Could you give me five minutes?" VS "Go away."
You're really busy, but your classmate needs your help. When you're busy and can't help him or her, you can't say, "Go away." Instead, you should say, "Could you give me five minutes?"
"Excuse me." VS "Move."
Telling someone to move out of the way is very impolite. When someone is in your way, you should say, "Excuse me."

"Would you mind...?" VS "Stop it!"
If someone is doing something rude(无礼的), would you like them to stop? You shouldn't say, "Stop talking on your phone in the cinema!" You can say, "Would you mind not using your phone in the cinema, please?"

Bissell is a village in West Sahara. Before Ken Levin discovered(发现) it, people here tried many times to walk out of the desert, but they didn't. He asked everyone, but got the same answer: no matter (无论) which direction you walk towards, you will return to the starting point. However, Ken Levin walked northwards from Bissell, and went out of the desert three days and a half later.
Ken Levin wanted to know why, so he asked a villager to be his guide. He didn't take his compass and followed with only a stick. They walked about 800 miles during 10 days. On the morning of the 11th day, they returned to Bissell.
Ken Levin finally understood: the people of Bissell could not walk out because they didn't know the Pole Star (北极星). In the desert, if a man goes only by his feeling, he will walk in circles of all sizes and the final footprint will probably be a shape of tape. The village of Bissell was in the middle of the desert without a reference. So it was impossible to walk out without knowing the Pole Star or taking a compass.

Before you visit a country, knowing about the customs of the country is important and useful. Here are 4 customs you should know before traveling to Japan.
No. 4 is avoided at all cost.
In Japan, the number "four" is avoided because it sounds very similar to the word for death. No. 4 is very unlucky as No. 13 in Western culture. And it is used as little as possible. You must always avoid giving anyone something in fours because it can be seen as a very ominous(不吉利的) gift. No. 49 is especially unlucky, as it sounds similar to the phrase that means "pain until death". The practice of avoiding No. 4 is called "Tetraphobia(四的禁忌)" and it is common in many East Asian and Southeast Asian regions.
People will sleep on the trains with their head on your shoulder.
If someone in Japan falls asleep with his or her head on your shoulder, it is common practice to just tolerate(容忍) it, because the place where most people work is far from their homes. After working long hours, many people will get very tired and often fall asleep on the trains.
You must always bring a host a gift.
If you want to visit someone, you must always bring a gift. The gift should also be wrapped(包).You should also never refuse a gift if someone visits you.
Pouring your own glass is considered rude.
It is common in the US and many other countries in the world to serve others before you serve yourself, but in Japan you shouldn't pour yourself a drink. If you have poured for others, another guest will hope to see that your drink is empty and pour for you.
