Bags of Fun Bring Smiles to Hospitalized Kids
In the weeks after 6-year-old Gabby Krause lost her battle with brain cancer in 2004, her mother and a close friend fought through tears as they discussed the best way to honor the little girl.
Out of that conversation-and previous encouragement from Gabby herself-Bags of Fun was born. It provides to children with life-threatening illnesses the very thing that made chemotherapy and radiation treatment(化疗) a little easier on Gabby:。bag full of toys, books, electronic devices(电子设备)and games to pass the time.
"The bag" was something her family brought along from the beginning of her 19-month battle, and Gabby voiced her wish to bring the same joy to the kids around her after realizing that most patients at the Children's Hospital didn't have a. bag of fun. It is a symbol of her selfless spirit.
"The bags are tailored to age and gender(性别), but the two mast common things are an electronic device and noise putty that makes sounds that bring laughter to children", said Solomon, a volunteer for the organization. In all, there are usually between 14-18 things in each bag to help pass the hard .“It's mostly about the power of play, what it's able to do for these kids who are sitting in a hospital worrying about what's going on, when the next needle poke or test is coming. " said Solomon, who adds there is strong evidence to suggest the activities reduce stress on patients and their parents.
A bag of fun, brought to Maelle Hicks on her first clay of treatment at the Children's Hospital in July 2014, had such a great effect that she and her family continue to volunteer and raise money for the organization, long after she left hospital. Her mother says Bags of Fun was a complete surprise to everyone, and Maelle will never forget it.
The scope(范围)of Bags of Fun has gotten bigger since its beginning. Bags were first given to cancer patients, but now all children affected by a life-threatening condition are able to benefit from Bags of Fun.

Scott’s Winter Holiday
Winter break was coming soon, and all Scott wanted to do was to go snowboarding. Unluckily, Scott’s parents had booked a weeklong tropical cruise (热带邮轮). But Scott hated warm weather and asked if he could just stay at his best friend’s house to snowboard every day at the local mountain. So he kept talking with his parents about it, but they would not change their minds. Family time is important, and it is a tradition that they spend winter break together.
When Scott got on the ship with his parents, he walked around to check everything out. He couldn’t believe how great everything was. The dining room looked like a palace; the game room had all of his favorite games. Then Scott saw the surfing pool (冲浪池). It wasn’t a big pool, but it had big waves, and the people who were riding the waves made it look like a lot of fun.
Scott asked his parents if he could put his swim shorts on so that he could try surfing. They said, “ Of course.” And much to Scott’s surprise, they wanted to try surfing too.
When Scott and his parents had their swim suits on, they headed back to the surfing pool. Scott’s dad went first and only lasted about five seconds. Then it was his mom’s turn. She actually made it five seconds longer than his dad did. When it was Scott’s turn, he was excited and nervous. Then the waves started. It felt similar to snowboarding but different at the same time. On his first ride, Scott rode for almost 30 seconds. He enjoyed himself a lot.
By the time the weeklong cruise was over, Scott had new friends he planned to keep in touch with, a new hobby, and great memories. He told his parents that it was his best holiday ever.

Recently, there have been many reports in newspapers and on TV about big animals coming into towns and cities. There have been bears in Vancouver parks, leopards on the streets of Mumbai and wild pigs in gardens in Berlin. What happens when big animals come into our cities?
Wild animals usually come into cities to look for food. In Cape Town, South Africa, baboons sometimes eat fruit from gardens and go into people’s kitchens and take food from fridges! Baboons are strong animals that scare children. Many people do not like them, but the city can be dangerous for baboons too. Sometimes, baboons are hurt in car accidents and human food can kill them. The city council (议会) in Cape Town has a team of Baboon Monitors. Their job is to find baboons in the city and take them back to the countryside. This makes the city safer for people and it is healthier for the baboons. The problem is that many baboons will come back to the city to look for food again.
In Berlin, Germany, groups of wild pigs sometimes come into the city to look for food. Pigs have come into the city for hundreds of years, but since the winters are warmer, there are more pigs now than in the past. Pigs eat flowers and plants in gardens and parks in the city. They also walk in the street and cause traffic accidents. Some people like the pigs and give them food. But the city council is worried about traffic accidents. They have told people not to give the pigs food and have put up fences (围栏) to stop the pigs from entering the city.
In Moscow, Russia, there are about 35, 000 wild dogs. They live in parks, markets and train stations. Some of the dogs were pets that people did not want so they left them on the streets. Others were born on the streets and have always lived there. Some dogs live alone and others live in packs (成群). A lot of people like them, and they give the dogs food and water. The winter in Moscow is very cold and people usually offer places for dogs to live in.
For many animals, cities are dangerous places and they need our help to return to the countryside.
25. What can we learn from the second paragraph?
A. Many children like playing with baboons.
B. Cape Town is a safe place for baboons to stay.
C. The city council tried to protect baboons in Cape Town.
D. Baboons were born on the streets and have always lived there.
26. What do we know about wild pigs in Berlin?
A. They make streets dirty.
B. They eat fruit from fridges.
C. They cause traffic accidents.
D. They break fences around gardens.
27. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Animal Protection B. Animals in the City
C. People and Nature D. Food for Animals
D
“I can’t believe that you forgot to come to study with me last night!” shouted Sherri to her best friend Taylor. “Because of you, I failed today’s math test. You’re so thoughtless.”
“You’re being silly, Sherri,” said Taylor. “ I didn’t come because I had to stay late at baseball practice. I called and told your dad. I guess you didn’t get the message.”
Have you ever been really angry with one of your friends or family members for letting you down? Everybody feels like this sometimes, but the key to controlling (控制) your anger is knowing what you are feeling and why, as well as understanding what you can do about it.
Sherri was angry. But if she looked at her feelings, she’d understand that the person she was angry with was herself. It wasn’t Taylor’s job to make sure she studied for the math testꎻ it was hers. When she didn’t do well in the test, she blamed (埋怨) her friend because that was easier than saying she had made a mistake. She thought she was angry at Taylor, but what she was really feeling was guilt (内疚).
Learning to know your true feelings is the first step in knowing what to do with them. Once you understand your true feelings, it’s time to work them out with some communication skills.
Really listening to what the other person is saying is important. It’s part of understanding how the person is feeling and what the problem actually is. To give your full attention you can keep eye contact (接触) and ask questions if you don’t understand.
Before you start talking, try doing a “ reality check” , a skill that makes sure you understand what you’ve just heard. You can paraphrase the person’s words to show that you are listening and that you are trying to understand his or her side of the story. For example, imagine if Taylor said, “ Sherri, you are feeling really angry at me because I didn’t show up last night and help you study for the math test. You didn’t do well in it, and you think that it’s my fault.” Do you think that Sherri would have got so angry if she had realized that Taylor was truly listening to her?
Now, it’s your turn to express your feelings. Start your sentences with “I”. This will let you express how someone’s behavior makes you feel. Instead of “You are so thoughtless,” you might say, “I felt really sad when you didn’t come over.” Messages that start with “you” will make a person feel uncomfortable, while “I” statements express a feeling.
It’s important to realize that your life will be full of emotions (情绪). However, understanding what you are really feeling and then learning how to deal with it are even more important.
28. What is the first step to deal with your emotions?
A. Understanding how you really feel.
B. Trying to understand the other side of a story.
C. Listening to what the other person is saying.
D. Controlling your feelings when you are angry.
29. What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?
A. The result of Sherri’s anger.
B. The explanation of Sherri’s emotional problems.
C. The reason for Sherri’s failure in her math exam.
D. The importance of understanding Sherri’s real feelings.
30. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing the passage?
A. To express how important listening is.
B. To teach how to communicate feelings.
C. To explain why emotions can control our lives.
D. To show why people’s lives are full of emotions.

It was a beautiful Saturday morning, a perfect morning for playing or swimming. However, Tom had to finish the work Aunt Polly gave him. As Tom started to paint Aunt Polly's very long fence (篱笆) , Ben Rogers came with a juicy apple in his hand.
Tom was silent. He focused on (专注于) his painting like an artist.
"Look like a lot of work, Tom."
Tom turned suddenly. "Oh, it's you, Ben! I didn't notice. "
"I'm going swimming. Don't you wish you could come instead of doing work?"
"What do you call work?" asked Tom.
"Isn't that work?"
Tom kept painting and answered carelessly, "Well, maybe it is, and maybe it isn't. All I know is it isn't work for me. "
"Oh come on. You can't mean you like it?"
Tom continued painting. “Like it? Well, I don't see why not. Does a boy get a chance to paint a fence every day?"
That put the thing in a new light. Ben stopped eating his apple. Tom swept his brush (刷子) carefully back and forth, added a touch of paint here and there, and stopped to take a look at it all.
Ben watched every move and became more and more interested until he finally said, "Tom, why don't you let me paint a little?"
Tom thought a while, "Well, no, I can't let you, Ben. You see, Aunt Polly's very proud of this fence. I think there isn't one boy in a thousand, maybe two thousand that can do it perfectly. "
"Oh come on. Let me try. I'd let you, if I were painting, Tom. "
"Ben, I'd like to …, but Aunt Polly, well . . . "
"I'll be careful, just let me try. I'll give you some of my apple. "
"Well, no, Ben. I'm afraid…"

When I first arrived in Australia, I was completely excited about everything. But very soon culture shock (文化冲击) came, which many people mistake as the phase (阶段) of feeling discomfort, unhappiness and homesickness. However, culture shock is more than that!
The Honeymoon Phase
The so-called " honeymoon phase" means those first weeks or months when you are super happy to be in another culture and everything you go through-from cultural differences such as ways of living to clothes, music, and food-seems so new and exciting.
The Negotiation Phase
However, after about two months, things started to feel strange. Differences became clearer. I started missing my friends and family more and more. I began to keep thinking like this: nobody really understands me. I wish people would just be able to speak German for one day! Why is it so impossible to find bread from Germany? In the "negotiation phase", feelings change from time to time, homesickness last night, excitement this morning.
The Adjustment Phase
Over the next few months, then, came a special time. I knew what I should do every day. I learned to forget about my loneliness and unhappiness, started to understand new ways of thinking and made many new friends. I had slowly and unknowingly entered the "adjustment phase". My English improved greatly-not only my vocabulary had improved but I also thought and dreamed only in English!
The Mastery Phase
Things started to make sense and I understood Australian culture better and better! Every day I felt more and more comfortable with my new home. I would like to say 'I have a second nationality'. My happiest moment was when my dear friend one day said, "You are Australian now, Jude! You sound just like us!" She saw me turn from a quiet shy German who could hardly follow a conversation to who I am now.
I want to point out that the effects (影响) of culture shock and the timing of the different phases are different for everyone and can mean different acts and feelings. But one thing is for sure: culture shock is inevitable (不可避免的) and understanding is the first step to adjusting (适应) better to a foreign culture.
37. When do people usually feel excited in a foreign country?
A. In the Honeymoon Phase. B. In the Negotiation Phase.
C. In the Adjustment Phase. D. In the Mastery Phase.
38. Because of culture shock, you may ___________.
A. lose some friends B. be super happy all the time
C. not be shy any more D. feel uncomfortable and lonely
39. What's the most important thing to get through culture shock successfully?
A. To forget the culture of your country for a short time.
B. To make as many friends as possible in the country.
C. To try your best to understand the foreign culture.
D. To improve your English as much as possible.
D
The diary
All my life I have loved airports. To me they are some kind of magic way to the world, a place from which to start great holidays and adventures. But today it looked like a cold and heartless place. I looked at my sister, her eyes were all tears (眼泪) , but she tried to keep a brave face. "You'd better go or you'll miss your flight," she said.
"I'll miss you," I answered, and with those last words I was off, without looking back, but when I reached the customs (海关) office I was crying. To me it was the end of the world, I felt like my best friend had just been taken away from me.
Growing up, my sister and I would do everything together. She was only fifteen months older than me and we not only looked alike, we were alike. We both had that same mix of curiosity and fear (好奇又害怕) of all things unknown to us. I remember countless times when we ask each other, "Want to come to the attic (阁楼) ?"… We both were afraid of the attic but also loved its smells and sounds. Whenever one of us needed something, the other one would come along. Together we would fight the life-size spiders and fight through the endless boxes until we found what we needed.
When the time came for us to go to college, what better way than for us to go together. But now that our college days were over and I was off to a foreign country to start a new life, all I had left were memories.
The plane shook heavily and my bag fell on the floor. A little book fell out of it. I picked it up and opened it-it was a diary.
Immediately I recognized (认出) my sister's handwriting. "Hi Sis, what a day it is today! First you let me know that you are moving to another country and then…" Only then did I realize that my sister had been keeping a diary for the past month and that she was now passing it on to me. I was to write in it for the next few months and then send it back to her.
I spent the rest of the flight reading the diary. Even though a large ocean separated (分开) us, at some point it felt like she was actually there. And I knew she would be around forever.
40. The writer is going to ____________.
A. have a holiday in a foreign country B. take adventures in another country
C. have a new life in a foreign country D. meet her sister at the airport
41. What can we learn from the passage?
A. The writer was as old as her sister. B. The sisters enjoyed the time in the attic.

42. Why does the passage use "The diary" as its title?

The baby owl fell 40 feet. Luckily, it was not hurt badly. The workers at the hospital fed the bird. The kept it warm and safe. The baby owl looked like a soft white ball and its eyes were still closed.
The workers asked a tree service to help them put the bird back in its nest. The tree service used a crane(起重机) with a long neck to put the baby owl back carefully. The workers thought the other baby probably pushed the baby bird out of its nest.
The team went back after two days to check on the baby owl. Its parents were feeding and taking care of it. The baby owl was safe.
The sanctuary was started by Dale Shields. Dale was called the "Pelican Man" because at first he only helped pelicans. Later he and his helpers started saving any animals in need. So far they have helped birds, deer, bats, foxes turtles, and frogs.
Wild animals get hurt in many ways. For example, water birds get hurt in fishing lines. Animals are also hit by cars or boats. Water and land pollution hurts animals, too. Many of the animals the sanctuary helps are in danger. The workers want to help make sure the animals don't die out.
People call the sanctuary when they see a hurt bird or other wildlife. Sanctuary workers go to pick up the animals. Then they take the animal to the hospital. Their work helps many animals survive.
Half of the animals the sanctuary helped finally returned to the wild. Other animals like Moe, need special care. Moe is a swan who was hurt by a dog. It lost one of its wings, so it can't fly. Today, Moe and other animals like him live at the sanctuary.

Bags of Fun Bring Smiles to Hospitalized Kids
In the weeks after 6-year-old Gabby Krause lost her battle with brain cancer in 2004, her mother and a close friend fought through tears as they discussed the best way to honor the little girl.

A baby owl fell out of its nest last week on Washington Boulevard. The bird got help from people at a bird sanctuary. A sanctuary is a place where animals are kept safe. The workers at the Pelican(鹈鹕)Man Bird Sanctuary cared for the bird at their hospital. Then they returned the bird to its nest.
