Butterflies at Risk
What's causing problems for these beautiful insects?
Something is harming the monarchs. One of the largest butterflies in North America, monarchs are famous for their long migrations(迁徙)covering thousands of miles. Yet the number of monarchs is dropping. Bad weather conditions, putting the butterfly population in danger. Some butterfly experts say that the number of monarch butterflies has been cut by 25 percent. In recent years, unusually cold temperatures and rain have caused monarchs to die in large numbers. These conditions have also caused new butterflies not to hatch(孵化).
Will they return?
Monarchs are very sensitive(敏感的)to change because of the long distances they travel. They cover thousands of miles each year, flying between their winter homes in Mexico or Southern California and their summer homes in the Midwest. Other animals also migrate. And many travel much farther. A bird called the Arctic tern goes round trip between the Arctic and the Antarctic every year. Like the Arctic tern, a type of gray whale has a long migration. It travels 12,400 miles from Baia California in Mexico to waters off Alaska and back. The longest migration ever recorded is by the sooty shearwater. Every year this bird flies 40, 000 miles from New Zealand to the northern part of the Pacific Ocean to find food.
The monarchs don't travel as far as animals like the Arctic tern and the sooty shearwater, but their journey isn't safe. Every year as many as 100 million monarch butterflies leave Mexico for the first leg of the migration. It's hard to imagine that such a large number might be in danger. Yet many scientists tell us that the danger is very real.
In Mexico people are destroying the natural environment. They cut down the trees where millions of monarchs. spend the winter and use chemicals to kill the milkweed, the monarch's favourite food. Monarchs spend the winter in Mexico and California. In both places, development is destroying these winter homes. Unless steps are taken to protect their habitats, the monarchs' migration could become a thing of the past.
"If we lose the whole migration, we lose one of the nation's most magnificent phenomena, " said Chip Taylor, a professor at the University of Kansas. These butterflies are the symbol of richness of biological diversity(生物多样性).

Knitting(编织) is a popular craft in the United States. Knitters use needles and yarn to make garments such as scarves, gloves, hats, and sweaters. Some people prefer to knit by themselves. Other knitters enjoy getting together with others who love to knit, so they form a knitting circle—a club whose members chat and knit at the same time. If you want to start a knitting circle, planning is easy.
First, you should invite people to join your knitting circle. Ask your friends if they are interested in being part of the group. You only need two people to start your circle, but as the saying goes, “The more, the merrier!”
Next, you need to decide when and where to meet. A time in the evening or on the weekend might be the most convenient. You could get together at a member’s home, a local coffee shop, or a community(社区) center.
After you have decided on a time and place, tell the other members of the circle when and where you will meet and what they should bring. You might want to ask them to bring their own yarn and needles—and extra to share! Knitting circle members often lend and borrow materials (材料).
At your first meeting, you should discuss your long-term plans for the club. How often do you want to meet? Do you want to take turns to bring food and drinks to the meeting? Do you want to give things your group knits to a charity (慈善机构)?
Starting a knitting circle does not need much work. With some successful planning, after a few meetings, your group can become a close-knit community; in other words, a happy knitting family!

Spring is the time when Qinghai Lake awakes from its icy, long winter. On the northern bank of the lake are the Naren Wetlands, which are home to tens of thousands of birds, and many of them are in danger.
Forty-two-year-old Jia Wu Cai Rang is a Tibetan. His family is living in the Naren Wetlands. People there need a peaceful place to live. But unluckily, from the 1990s, some poachers (偷猎者) came, breaking the peace of the lake, where they began to make a living by killing, catching and selling birds.

"
In 1997, Qinghai Lake became a state-level natural reserve. This gave the resources of the Naren Wetlands full protection. Cai Rang says he is not only protecting the wetland and its birds, but also taking care of hurt birds as they can return to Mother Nature at an early date.
