My neighbor Orlando is a paramedic He and his wife are some of the nicest people I have ever met. A few years back we started this sort of “favor war” , where one of us would do something for the other, such as shoveling (铲)their driveway or helping them build a shed, and next time the other would try to top it with another favor.
Yesterday morning there was maybe 2 or 3 feet of snow on the ground and I remembered he shoveled my driveway for me last snowfall. So I took out my shovel and took care of both our sidewalks and driveways because it was my turn to do a favor back. It took a while but I finished and got into my car for work. What I didn’t realize was that Orlando had to work that day too.
Fast forward to this morning I got a knock on my door. It was him. He immediately shook my hand and informed me that because I shoveled his driveway and sidewalk for him, he was able to get to work earlier. As soon as he started his shift, a call came through that a young boy was in a medical emergency. Luckily, he and his partner were only about 2 minutes away, but the next closest ambulance was in 10 minutes. This kid did not have 10 minutes. He barely had 2 minutes. Because my neighbor got to work sooner, the young boy got to live his life.
This isn’t a humble brag (吹牛). This is to inform others that even the smallest favors can have the biggest impacts. It wasn’t too much of trouble to shovel his driveway for him, but because I did, the young kid got to see his family again, go back to school again, talk to his friends again and live his life.
    1. What can we know about the writer and Orlando?
A .They once had a conflict.
    B. They signed a favorable agreement.
    C. They favor shoveling snow together.
    D. They are always ready to help each other.
    2. Who saved the boy before it was too late?
    A. The writer.
    B. The boy’s parents.
    C. Orlando and his wife.
    D. Orlando and his partner.
    3. What does the writer intend to tell us?
    A. Never ask for trouble.
    B. No favor is too small.
    C. One cannot always be lucky.
    D. Don’t lose heart in an emergency.

2、These days scientists have been looking beyond diet and lifestyle to genetic factors(基因因素)when it comes to long life. The small village of Molochio in Calabria, Italy, has a population of about 2,000. And of these, there are at least eight people over a hundred years old. Researchers ask people about the secret of their long life. The answer is invariably (—贯地)to do with diet and is almost always the same, “I eat a lot of fruit and vegetables. ” “A little bit, but of everything.” “No smoking, no drinking."
Kric Topol is one researcher who questions the received wisdom, saying, “There must be genes that explain why some people are protected from the harmful genes that affect the aging process."
In one small region, Ecuador, there are a number of people with a genetic condition called Laron syndrome, which restricts a person’s growth to little more than a metre, but also seems to protect them against cancer. Those with Laron syndrome live longer than the rest of their families. Meanwhile, on the Hawaiian island of Oahu, there’s a completely separate group of Japanese-American men who are particularly long-lived. And it turns out that they have a variant(变异)of the same gene as the Laron syndrome group.
Back in Calabria, scientists have been trying to work out exactly how much of the local longevity(长寿)is due to genetics and how much to environmental factors. Researchers constructed the family trees of the 100-year-old people. They looked at family information from the 19th century to today. They conclude that there are genetic factors that give health benefits to the men—a surprising result because generally, in Europe, women over a hundred years old outnumber men by about five to one.
1.What can we learn about the research into the long life?
    A. It looks mainly at peopled diet. B. It has changed its focus recently.
C.It has denied traditional ideas on longevity. D. It has linked people’s lifestyles to their genes.
2.What does Eric Topol think of the diet for a long and healthy life?
    A. It’s unreliable. B. It’s academic.
    C. It’s worth studying. D. Ifs a common sense.
3.Why are the scientists interested in Laron syndrome?
    A. It affects the rest of a family. B. It helps people grow healthily.
    C. It has had different versions. D. It is connected with long life.
4.What does the research about long life into families in Calabria show?
    A. The idea of genes isn’t supported. B. More women live longer than men.
    C. Genes and environment work equally. D. There are unexpected longevity patterns.
3、    If you go to any college in the United States, you will find most students carrying the same items: books, laptops, cell phones and their official school identification cards, or IDs. These small plastic cards do more than showing the names and pictures of students.
In recent years, IDs in some colleges can also buy things. The schools enter into agreements with banks so students can link their cards to private financial accounts. This way, students can use their cards to pay for things like food on campus and school supplies. In other words, their IDs become debit cards (借记卡).However, new research suggests that the way these card programs operate can harm students.
The U. S. Public Interest Research Group(U. S. PIRG) aims to use research to support and protect peopled financial interests. The organization has been looking into agreements between colleges and banks for several years. This April, Kaitlyn Vitez, higher education campaign director for U. S. PIRG, released their latest findings. "Students with campus debit cards paid over $ 24 million in fees during the last contract year. For example, students may be charged fees if they use another bank to withdraw money. Or, they may be charged fees if they spend more money than they have in their bank accounts," she said. "Any large fee can create unexpected problems for students, however, banks do not make possible fees clear enough to students. "
        U. S. PIRG noted that some banks pay colleges for permission to advertise their debit card programs on campus. The advertising can appear to be part of official school programmes and students may feel pushed towards opening accounts. U. S. PIRG also found a connection between colleges with paid agreements and student fees. Students at colleges that received money from banks ended up paying up to 2. 3 times more than students at colleges with unpaid agreements. U. S. PIRG contacted several of the colleges in their latest research, yet they seem not to give satisfying comments.
1.What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A.Potential harm of IDs. B.Additional use of IDs.
C.Students’ consuming habits. D.Students’ financial condition.
2.What do Kaitlyn Vitez’s words imply?
A.Colleges benefit a lot from working with banks
B.Most students fall into heavy debts at college.
C.Banks give away students’ financial privacy somehow.
D.Students lack enough information on their campus debit cards.
3.What will the author probably talk about in the following paragraph?
A.Solutions to the phenomenon. B.Future of school IDs.
C.Details of debit card programs. D.Response of some schools.

Antarctica is the center of important scientific research. However, with an increasing number of day, scientists have to leave their work to greet a group of tourists who are taking a vacation in this continent of ice. Even though their desire to enjoy this vast and beautiful landscape can be appreciated, Antarctica should be closed to tourists.
Tourists in Antarctica can damage scientific research and hurt the environment. When tourist groups come, they take scientists away from their research. The work is difficult and some of the projects can be damaged by such simple mistakes as opening the wrong door or knocking against a small piece of equipment. In addition, tourists in Antarctica can also hurt the environment. Members of Greenpeace, one of the world's leading environmental organizations, complain tourists leave trash on beaches and disturb the plants and animals. In a place as frozen as Antarctica, it can take one hundred years for a plant to grow back.
The need to protect Antarctica from tourists becomes even greater when we consider the fact that there is no government here. Antarctica belongs to no country. Who is making sure that the penguins, plants and sea are safe? No one is responsible. It is true that the number of tourists who visit Antarctica each year is smaller compared to the number of those who visit other places. However, these other places are controlled by local governments. They have an interest in protecting their natural environments. Who is concerned about the environment of Antarctica? The scientist, to be sure, but not necessarily the tour companies that make money from sending people south.
If we don’t protect Antarctica from tourism, there may be serious consequences for us all. We might lose the results of scientific research projects. It,s possible that these results could teach us something important about the causes and effects of climate change. Some fragile plants and animals might die and disappear forever. This could damage the balance of animal and plant life in Antarctica. We know from past experience that when things get unbalanced, harmful changes can occur.

根据第一段的第一句“These days scientists have been looking beyond diet and lifestyle to genetic factors(基因闪 素)when it comes to long life.
2.根据第—段中的“ Erie Topol is one researcher who questions the received wisdom…”

依据第三段中的" however, banks do not make possible fees clear enough to students"可知,银行并没有明确向学生指出校园"借记卡"收费的情况,所以学生对他们的校园"借记卡" 缺乏足够的了解,故选D。
U. S. PIRG contacted several of the colleges in their latest research, yet they seem not to give satisfying comments"可知,U.S.

1.A; 2.D; 3.C; 4.B; 5.D; 6.C; 7.B; 8.A; 9.A; 10.D; 11.D; 12.B; 13.B; 14.C; 15.A; 16.D; 17.A; 18.C; 19.C; 20.B
Sophia waits for a distribution of free food"可知,Sophia在等待免费食物发放,因此这里用expecting与上文的"waits for"呼应。
    4.B 根据空前的"but"和空后的"she doesn’t even rely on her own children because she's    5    "可知,Sophia甚至连子女也不依赖,因为她是位十分独立的女性,她不愿麻烦他人,所以Khanna知道Sophia不会听从他的劝说,他也就不需要为此和Sophia争论了。
They’ve distributed over 450,000 kilograms of food"可知,此处表示这个机构给老人和残疾人送去食物,用delivery表示"递送"。
    11.D 根据空后的"we just wanted to 12 a service for people"可知,此处与下文形成对比,表示他们开始的时候根本就没想到要这样做 call for"需要,要求";take up"开始从事"。
16.D 根据下文的"including a breakfast program for 300 students daily,as well as offering food to local food banks during times of     17     "可知, 这家慈善机构的服务不断扩展,因此选D。
18.C 根据破折号后的解释"more and more people come to know about it"可知,他们的慈善工作正得到人们的关注(attention)。
19.C 根据空前的"But"和空后的"given that it still needs trucks, an office and more assistance"可知,这个慈善机构的工作虽然得到了人们的关注,但考虑到他们仍需要卡车、一间办公室和更多的帮助,他们的工作依旧是一场艰难的(hot)战斗。

1. it2. be damaged3.to place4. living5. repaired6. to7.is8.daily9.scratches10.which
It seems that...
get sth. done"使某物被……"。
