Major causes of record fires sweeping across the Amazon rainforest this month include the dry season and human activities, according lo research institutions and media reports.

The rainforest is typically wet and humid, and the frequency of fire activity usually rise each year since Julythe onset of the dry season, and peaks in September and decreases in October as the rainy season approaches.

However, data from the Brazil's National Institute for Space Research (Inpe) showed that the number of forest fires in Brazil soared by 82 percent from January to August this year from a year ago, and over half of those fires occurred in the Amazon rainforest. A total of 71,497 forest fires were registered in the country in the first eight months of 2019 , up from 39,194 in the same period in 2018, the Inpe said.

Human activities have led to the recent increase of fires , some experts have noted. Tlie view was echoed by many, though they were divided over who actually conducted the activities. On Friday evening , Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro pledged "zero tolerance'* of environmental crimes, adding t ha t the Armed Forces troops and resources will be mobilized from Saturday to help put out the fires.

Earlier this week, Bolsonaro blamed non-governmental organizations for increasing wildfires in the Amazon rainforest in the country's north. His claim was refuted (反驳)by environmentalists , who argued that the surge of fires was a result of increasing deforestation and burning fuelled by the governments anti-environmental policy. Alberto Setzer, an Inpc researcher, told local news site G1 that all the fires are results of human activities some accidental while others intentional.

Scientists and environmental groups are worried that the fires will aggravate climate change crisis and threaten biodiversity. The emergency has now transcended (越过)Brazil's borders, reaching Peruvian, Paraguayan and Bolivian regions.

    第二节概要写作(满分25分)

    阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

Once upon a time, eating alone was just that: sitting down in a restaurant on one's own and eating a meal. Everyone did it sometimes, and when they did so they might be a little embarrassed. To cat alone might suggest that you didn't have any family or friends, or didn't like people. There was a kind of shame attached to it. Nowadays, however, there is more and more solitary eating.

People choose to eat alone for various reasons. "Foodies'*—people who have a passionate interest in different cuisines -do it because all they need for their pleasure is the chance to eat good food. They don't want company or conversation, but only the joy of eating some special dish.

Other people eat alone because it's simply practical for them to do so. For instance, it's estimated that nearly a third of all the customers of fast-food restaurants eat alone. They arc served with their food fast, cat it fast and then leave fast- because they have a meeting to make or a child to pick up from school.

But fbr others, the appeal of eating alone is quite diflerent. It's an experience of freedom. For the hour that it takes to have a meal, they can forget all the pressures of their lives. For a brief window, they don* t have to deal with their family or job. They can relax and let their mind wander. Maybe they will bring a book, a newspaper or perhaps they will shyly spy on the people around them. Part of the appeal of this new trend is surely that a meal taken alone is like a little holiday from the busyness of modem life, in which we have so much to do all the time. David Annand. editor of Us-based Conde Nast Traveler magazine, who delights in dining alone, peaks of his pleasure in the “rhythm of a meal in a restaurant—its ebb and flow (人来人往),the regular arrival and departure of the waiter." Tliis restaurant rhythm allows him and others, he writes, to sit back, observe, and think.

    概要要点(详见ppt

Though eating alone was embarrassing and shameful in the past, currently solitary eating has become a new trend for particular reasons. Food enthusiasts seek for the pure joy of delicious dishes. Some people eat alone for efficiency in their fast-paced life. But others do it for freedom and leisure as they can escape from the whirl of modern life.
