Mark Twain is one of the greatest American authors. He published his most famous works in the later decades of the 19th century, when the US was still building a literary tradition for itself.
Twain created a kind of writing that was named “local color literature ”. The term means that the writing contains many references to the culture of the story’s location. For Twain in particular, his works are filled with references to the southern states of the US, particularly the lives of the people along the Mississippi river. You feel it in his descriptions of places and the way he makes his characters speak. This is clear in his most famous work, the novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
This story is the self-told tale of a boy who lives with a kind old woman. She wants Huck to grow up properly, and takes good care of him. However, like his friend Tom Sawyer, the famous character of an earlier novel by Twain, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Huck doesn’t like to follow rules. He lives the way he wants to, not the way other people want him to.
During his adventures, Finn runs away from home—to get away from school, and his nasty father. Along the way, he creates a friendship with a runaway slave, Jim. Together, they build the most famous childhood friendship in American literature.
Even though it’s his most famous work, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is just one of Twain’s many achievements in literature. He’s also an author of “famous quotes”. As with words by other 19th century authors like Irish Poet Oscar Wilde and Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw, many will have read words written by Twain, even if they don’t know his name.
One of his most famous quotes came from a letter he sent to a newspaper, after it had published that he’d died. “Rumors of my death,” Twain wrote, “are greatly exaggerated(夸张)”.
    24. According to the article, what is the main feature of Mark Twain’s works?
    A. They are mostly about children’s adventures.
    B. They are about every culture across the US.
    C. They focus on the lives of upper-class Americans.
    D. They focus on the culture of the southern states of America.
    25. What can we learn about Huck from the article?
    A. He lives a poor life with his mother. B. He loves to be free and be himself.
    C. He is smart and does well at school. D. He runs away to find his friend Jim.
    26. What similarity does Mark Twain share with Oscar Wilde and George Bernard Shaw?
    A. They all started a new literary tradition.
    B. They are all known throughout the world.
    C. They all produced many well-known quotes.
    D. They all contribute much to American literature.
    27. What’s the article mainly about?
    A. Mark Twain’s most famous novel. B. The origin of local color literature.
    C. Why Mark Twain is a great author. D. The influence of Mark Twain’s works.
    C
How crowded your neighborhood is can affect the health of our planet, a new study finds. Scientists measured the effect that people have on the environment using a carbon footprint. That footprint reflects the amount of carbon dioxide—a greenhouse gas—that is sent into the atmosphere because of people’s daily activities.
Carbon footprints tend to be low for citizens. Living in a suburb outside a city, however, can be opposite.
People living in the city centers have low carbon footprints, the researchers found. “It is much easier to have a low carbon effect if your home is close to where you work, shop and play,” explains Jones. Living within walking or biking distance cuts back on the amount of carbon dioxide compared with moving people by cars. And cities with bus and subway networks allow people to travel great distances while keeping the amount of greenhouse gases low.
Not everyone can afford to live in the city, however. Suburbs offer more space, allowing people to build larger homes. Suburbs may offer better schools to kids. But those homes are usually far away from where owners work, play or learn. So people who live in suburbs often drive long distances.
The average household in a large city sends out about 40 tons of carbon dioxide per year. The average suburban household, however, sends out close to 50 tons of carbon dioxide per year.
The New findings are an important contribution to climate research. They would give scientists a better feel of how culture might mix with locations to influence our carbon footprints.
You may not have any control over the location of your home. Still, everyone can take steps to shrink their carbon footprints. That’s because how much we pollute is influenced not just by where we live, but also by how we live.
To shrink your footprints, start small. Turn off lights when they’re not in use. Recycle or reuse things instead of throwing them away. And as people get used to making small changes, the leap to bigger ones will get easier.
    28. Why do people living in suburbs have higher carbon footprints?
    A. Because they often drive to work, play or do other things.
    B. Because their homes take up too much space.
    C. Because they often use buses and subways to travel great distance.
    D. Because they have to send their kids to schools by car.
    29. How are Paragraph 3 to 5 mainly developed?
    A. By giving examples. B. By making comparisons.
    C. By following time order. D. By explaining processes.
    30. We can infer from the passage that __________.
    A. people living in big cities produce more carbon dioxide
    B. culture plays the most important role in influencing the environment
    C. any process of making new products may pollute the environment
    D. one’s small step can make a big difference to the environment
    31. From which part of a website could this passage probably be taken?
    A. Health. B. Sports. C. Culture. D. Environment
    D
After photographer Monni Must’s daughter Miya died, the sad mother adopted her black dog, Billy Bean. As Billy became increasingly weak, the thought of its dying was just more than Must could handle. So she decided to clone the dog. “I feared everyone was going to forget Miya,” she said, “and my other daughters thought I had completely lost my mind.”
Billy's cells were shipped to ViaGen Pets, a Texas company that provides the cloning service. With more than $50,000, Must picked up a new puppy. “The dog has a real soul and is everything my daughter was—fun, social and kind,” she said. “I feel that I still have that touchable connection and not just a spiritual connection.”
Cloning animals is hardly new. But the recent news that singer Barbra Streisand had cloned her dog grabbed international headlines. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals(PETA) president Ingrid Newkirk issued a statement saying she would love to talk her out of cloning, noting that millions of wonderful dogs are getting old in animal shelters every year or dying in terrifying ways when abandoned.
Normally, a doctor takes a tissue biopsy(组织活检), a piece of skin and muscle about the size
of a pencil eraser, from the dog. The next step is to take an egg cell from a donor dog, remove the egg’s nucleus, and insert DNA from the pet to be cloned. When an embryo(胚胎)develops, it is transplanted in the body of a mother dog.
In the basic cloning procedure, scientists take an entire adult cell and put it into an egg that’s
been relieved of its own DNA. The resulting embryo is a clone. However, in many animals, only one in 100 cloned embryos ever leads to a live birth. Some embryos die in the IVF dish or in the mothers bodies. Of those that are born, a few suffer from abnormalities and quickly die. Besides, pet cloning doesn’t mean copying everything of your beloved pets.
    32. Why did Must decide to clone Billy Bean?
    A. She felt alone without its company.
    B. Her work experience inspired her to do so.
    C. She wanted to keep her daughter’s memory.
    D. Her family encouraged her to get a new dog.
    33. What’s Newkrik’s attitude towards pet cloning?
    A. Supportive. B. Negative. C. Objective. D. Uncertain.
    34. What does Paragraph4 mainly talk about?
    A. How dog cloning works. B. The achievements in dog cloning.
    C. The disadvantages of pet cloning. D. How to support animal protection.
    35. The last paragraph implies that animal cloning________________.
    A. is widely accepted now. B. has a very high failure rate.
    C. gives pet owners false information. D. has made a breakthrough in recent years.

One afternoon, I went to pick up my mother from work. 41 , I looked outside the car window, there was a small park 42 I saw a little boy running freely on the grass as his mother watched from a short distance. The boy would then fall to the grass, 43 , and without hesitation or without looking back at his mother, run as fast as he could, again, still with a smile on his face, 44 nothing happened.
When they fall down, kids don’t 45 their falling down as a failure, but 46 , they treat it as a learning experience, 47 just another result of outcome. They try and try again 48 they succeed. They haven’t associated “falling down” with the word “ 49 ” yet, thus they don’t know how to feel the state which accompanies failure. So they don’t 50 . Plus, they probably think to themselves that it’s perfectly okay to fall down, and that it’s not 51 to do so. In other words, they give themselves 52 to make mistakes, subconsciously.
While I was 53 by the boy’s persistence, I was equally touched by the 54 in which he ran. With each attempt, he looked so confident… so natural. His only aim was to run freely and to do it as effectively as he could. He was just being a child—just being himself—being completely in the moment. He was not looking for approval or was not worrying about 55 someone was watching. He wasn’t 56 about being judged. He didn’t seem to be bothered by 57 that maybe someone would see him fall. No, what 58 to him was to accomplish the task or activity 59 to the best of his ability.
I learned a lot from that 60 and experience, and have successfully brought that lesson with me in my life.
