Teenagers will be told to "stand up for their elders" on public transport — or risk losing their right to free travel.
London Mayor Boris Johnson will declare plans today to make youngsters sign a “courtesy pledge" (文明宣言) to promise to behave in a respectful manner when travelling in the capital. The three-point pledge states that they will give up their seats to the elderly, pregnant and disabled; keep from using offensive or threatening language; and be courteous and polite to fellow passengers and staff.
Those who refuse, or are caught behaving in a loutish manner, will have their free travel passes removed. The plan — a key part of Mr. Johnson's re-election bid— will initially affect the 400,000 11-to-15-year-olds in London who qualify for free travel cards, but Tory sources believe the idea could be used across the country.
A Conservative insider said: "The plan corresponds perfectly with the push to create a Big Society. It is about changing culture and expectations around behavior to improve the atmosphere on buses and trains for everyone."
Speaking before today's launch, Mr. Johnson said he was determined to deal with the anti-social behavior of a "minority of youngsters" on public transport. "When I was a boy, I was taught to stand up for those less able to, "he said. "Youngsters enjoy the privilege of free travel, which is paid for by Londoners, but they have to understand that with that privilege comes responsibility. Anyone who abuses this privilege will have it taken away, and will have to earn that right bach ."
Teenagers found guilty of a serious violation of the new behavior rules will lose their travel passes, and will have to carry out unpaid community work to earn them back.
Mr. Johnson is also introducing a "two strikes and you're out" policy to deal with repeat offenders, under which those committing a second serious violation of the rules will lose their travel rights permanently.
1. Which of the following is NOT the content of the "courtesy pledge"?
A. Teenagers should give up their seats to the old.
B. Teenagers shouldn't talk with strangers in public.
C. Teenagers mustn't use aggressive language in public.
D. Teenagers must be polite to people on public transport.
2. What does the underlined word "loutish" in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A. rude. B. stupid.
C. polite. D. calm.
3. According to Mr Johnson,____________.
A. youngsters should know duty comes with benefit.
B. youngsters shouldn't use the privilege of free travel.
C. anyone shouldn't make money with the privilege.
D. youngsters should do some unpaid community work.
由第二段“The three-point pledge states that they will give up their seats to the elderly, pregnant and disabled; keep from using offensive or threatening language; and be courteous and polite to fellow passengers and staff.”
由第三段“Those who refuse, or are caught behaving in a loutish manner, will have their free travel passes removed.”
由第五段“ Youngsters enjoy the privilege of free travel, which is paid for by Londoners, but they have to understand that with that privilege comes responsibility. ”年轻人享受免费旅行的特权,这是伦敦人支付的,但是他们必须明白,这种特权带来了责任。可知,年轻人在享受权利的同时要履行义务。故A选项正确。
【点睛】利用所给的关键词是解决词义猜测题的重要解题方法。由第三段“Those who refuse, or are caught behaving in a loutish manner, will have their free travel passes removed.”

Microsoft has developed a new smartphone app that interprets eye signals and translates them into letters, allowing people with motor neurone disease to communicate with others from a phone.
The GazeSpeak app combines a smartphone’s camera with artificial intelligence to recognize eye movements in real time and convert them into letters, words and sentences.
For people suffering from ALS(渐冻症), also known as motor neurone disease, eye movement can be the only way they are able to communicate.
“Current eye-tracking input systems for people with ALS or other motor impairments are expensive, not robust under sunlight, and inconvenient to operate and carry,” said Xiaoyi Zhang,a researcher at Microsoft who developed the technology.
“To overcome the drawbacks, we created GazeSpeak, which is designed to be low-cost, robust, portable and easy to learn.”
The app is used by the listener by pointing his smartphone at the speaker. A chart that can be stuck to the back of the smartphone is then used by the speaker to determine which eye movements to make in order to communicate.
The sticker shows four grids of letters, which each corresponds to a different eye movement. By looking up, down, left or right, the speaker selects which grids the letters they want belong to. The artificial intelligence system is then able to predict the word or sentence they are trying to say.
Zhang’s research, Smartphone-Based Gaze Gesture Communication for People with Motor Disabilities, is set to be presented at the Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems in May.
4. What’s the major function of Paragraph 1?
A. To arouse the reader’s concern.
B. To summarize the whole passage.
C. To state how GazeSpeak app works.
D. To introduce the topic of the passage.
5. The GazeSpeak app is designed to .
A. convert eye movements into letters, words and sentences

On the day the tornado hit, there was no indication severe weather was on its way—the sky was blue and the sun had been out. The first alert my husband, Jimmy, 67, and I, 65, got came around 9 p.m., from some scrolling text on the TV Jimmy was watching. He ran upstairs to find me in our third-floor bedroom, and we changed the channel from the presidential primary debate I had been watching to our local Pensacola, Florida, station.
No sooner had we found coverage of the tornado than it was on top of us. It was the loudest thing I have ever heard. The bones of the house shook, and the power went out. Pink insulation flew into the room from a trapdoor to the attic, and the wind began to roar through the house, most likely through blown-out windows and the door to our garage. We had three flights of steps to navigate to get to the relative safety of the first floor. Because the closet down there is wedged underneath a brick staircase, it seemed like the sturdiest place in our town house to wait things out.
I didn’t know how or if we would make it down the steps. It felt as if there were no floor underneath me as the wind lifted me off my feet. I gripped the banister and tried to move forward, but this intense pressure held me in place. In those seconds of practical stillness, I could hear everything around me rattling. Everything was moving.
As we reached the last flight of steps, our front door blew out. Shards of glass that looked like crushed ice flew everywhere. Suddenly, a three-foot-long tree branch whipped through the doorframe. It flew over our heads, missing us by inches. Had we been one step up, it would have impaled us.
We got close to the staircase landing only to hear the loud ripping sound of our garage door coming off. The back wall of the house followed suit and tore off into the darkness outside.
By the time I reached the closet, the tornado had been over us for about a minute. Jimmy pushed me down to the closet floor, but he couldn’t get inside himself because of the wind. I gripped Jimmy’s arm as the tornado sucked the door open—we never did get it fully shut—and tried to bring Jimmy with it. My knees and scalp were full of glass, but in that moment, I felt no pain. If I had let go, Jimmy would have flown right out the back of the house and into the bay.
“Hold on! Hold on!” he yelled. But there was nothing in this closet to hold on to. We use it to store Christmas decorations.
All of a sudden, Jimmy lifted off his feet like people in tornadoes do in the movies. I thought he was gone. And then everything stopped. He landed on his feet. In those first quiet moments, I couldn’t believe it was over. Jimmy said he’d go outside to check. “No,” I said. “Don’t leave me. Don’t leave me.”
Our neighbor says the storm lasted four minutes. In that time, four of the twelve town houses in our unit were completely destroyed. Of the houses left standing, ours suffered the most damage. Amazingly, none of us were severely injured.

A. By concrete description.
B. By giving examples.

A. We had a narrow escape among the flying tree brunch.
B. The flying tree brunch was so close to us that we had been impaled.
C. If we had gone further, shards of glass would have hit us.
D. If we had been one step up, we would have reached the safe place.
11. Which of the following proverbs can best conclude the author’s experience?

How to Enjoy Life As a Teen
The "best years of your life"? Maybe not, but you can learn to make the most of your high school days. _____12_____. Whether it's having a computer, having friends, having a good supply of food, a bed to sleep on, family that loves you, having a decent education or simply being born in this world. Remember that the point of life is for you to enjoy it. Be happy, and life will reward you. Remember that these are the last few years you will be able to enjoy yourself without having to worry about the responsibility of an adult, but make sure you prepare yourself for when you do become one.
Choose your friends wisely. Unlike what many articles state, you don't have to be popular and have a gazillion friends to be happy. _____13_____. Try to have friends that like you who you are, not just because you are wearing a certain brand of shoes or something like that. These are people who shop at the same store as you; not someone who will sympathize with you when your dog dies.
______14______. Having a healthy body leads to a healthy and happy mind. Being confident in your appearance makes you more confident in other areas.
Be sociable. _____15_____ While you only need 4 or 5 close friends, that doesn't mean you shouldn't try to meet new people. Participating gives you something to do instead of sitting bored at home and wallowing in self-pity.
____16____! If you have a special girl/guy you want to ask out, dance with, etc. just ask! You probably won't be rejected but if you are, remember that there will always be someone else that likes you for who you are. Don't go to sleep that night wishing you would have asked them. About 90% of the girls or guys you talk to will like you back, only about 10% probably will reject or badmouth you.
A.Go for it.
B.Keep your grades up.
C.Play a sport or work out.
D.Learn to appreciate small things.
E.If you are not good at sports, join a band or choir.
F.In fact, many of the “Friends” you have when you are popular are not true friends.
G.Participating in clubs, activities and sport increases your chances of meeting new friends.
14. C 15. G

They loved him because he played games with them and often told them stories while he was sitting outside the “King George”, the village inn.
He spend a lot of time in the inn because he was a very lazy man. Instead of working on his farm, he would go fishing or hunting, or sit in the village inn talking to his friends. His family was poor and his wife used to get angry with him. “What kind of farmer are you?” She would say. “Why don’t you get down to some work, you lazy man!”
After arguments with his wife, Rip always went off hunting with his dog, Wolf. One day, after another argument, Rip went further than usual in the woods and came to a beautiful valley. Suddenly, he heard a strange voice calling his name. An old man, dressed in old-fashioned clothes, was trying to carry a barrel(木桶) and asked Rip to help him. Rip agreed. They took the barrel to a cave, where there were more people, all dressed in the same strange clothes. After that, the old man gave Rip a drink from the barrel. As soon as he got there, he realized that everything was different and there were lots of new houses. Surprisingly, he didn’t recognize the people in the village.

B

B. The flying tree brunch was so close to us that we had been impaled.
C. If we had gone further, shards of glass would have hit us.
D. If we had been one step up, we would have reached the safe place.

14. C 15. G
16. A

由“Whether it's having a computer, having friends, having a good supply of food, a bed to sleep on, family that loves you, having a decent education or simply being born in this world. Remember that the point of life is for you to enjoy it. ”无论是有电脑,有朋友,有充足的食物供应,睡觉的床,爱你的家庭,有良好的教育,还是仅仅出生在这个世界上。记住,生活的意义在于让你享受它。可知,这都是作为一个青少年应该具体感激的内容,所以小题1要总说感激生活中的小事情。故D选项切题。
【13题详解】
由“Choose your friends wisely. Unlike what many articles state, you don't have to be popular and have a gazillion friends to be happy.”
由“Having a healthy body leads to a healthy and happy mind. Being confident in your appearance makes you more confident in other areas.”
由“While you only need 4 or 5 close friends, that doesn't mean you shouldn't try to meet new people. Participating gives you something to do instead of sitting bored at home and wallowing in self-pity.”
由“Having a healthy body leads to a healthy and happy mind. Being confident in your appearance makes you more confident in other areas.”

Rip agreed. Then he noticed a curious thing----his hair was over his shoulders and his beard was over a foot long! So strange was he that he decided immediately to get back to the village. As soon as he got there, he realized that everything was different and there were lots of new houses. Surprisingly, he didn’t recognize the people in the village.
