Thirteen, for me, was a challenging year. My parents divorced and I moved to a new town with my father, far from my old family and friends. I was terribly lonely and would cry myself to sleep each night. To ease my sadness, my father purchased an old horse for me at a local market. I named him Cowboy.
Cowboy was undoubtedly the ugliest horse in the world. But I didn’t care. I loved him beyond all reason.
I joined a riding club and suffered rude comments and mean snickers about Cowboy’s looks. I never let on about how I felt, but deep inside, my heart was breaking. The other members rode beautiful, registered horses.
When Cowboy and I entered the events where the horse is judged on appearance, we were quickly shown the gate. No amount of preparation and love would turn Cowboy into a beauty. My only chance to compete would be in the speed events. I chose the jumping race.
One girl named Becky rode a big brown horse in the race events. She always won the blue ribbons. Needless to say, she didn’t feel threatened when I competed against her at the next show. She didn’t need to. I came in next to last.
The stinging memory of Becky’s smirks(得意的笑) made me determined to beat her. For the whole next month I woke up early every day and rode Cowboy five miles to the arena. We practiced running and jumping for hours in the hot sun and then I would walk Cowboy home totally exhausted.
All of our hard work didn’t make me feel confident by the time the show came. I sat at the gate and sweated it out while I watched Becky and her horse charge through the course and finish in first place.
My turn finally came. I put on my hat, rubbed Cowboy’s neck and entered the arena. At the signal, we dashed toward the first fence, jumped it without trouble and raced on to the next one. Cowboy then flew over the second, third and fourth fences like a bird and I turned him toward the finish line.
As we crossed the line the crowd was shocked into silence. Cowboy and I had beaten Becky and her fancy horse by two seconds!
I gained much more than a blue ribbon that day. At thirteen, I realized that no matter what the odds, I’d always come out a winner if I wanted something badly enough to work for it.
5. Why was the writer unconfident of victory?
A. He was an inexperienced rider.
B. He was unpopular with the crowd.
C. He had not practised much yet.
D. He thought his horse wasn’t good.
6. What did the writer learn from his experience?
A. Life can sometimes be unfair for us.
B. Anything is possible if one tries hard enough.
C. A positive attitude will bring us success.
D. One should not judge others by appearance.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. A Run to Remember B. A Horse’s Tale
C. Neck and Neck Race D. A Difficult Age
C
What is the first thing you notice when you walk into a shop? The products displayed at the entrance? Or the soft background music?
But have you ever noticed the smell? Unless it is bad, the answer is likely to be no. But while a shop’s scent may not be outstanding compared with sights and sounds, it is certainly there. And it is providing to be an increasing powerful tool in encouraging people to purchase.
A brand store has become famous for its distinctive scent which floats through the fairly dark hall and out to the entrance, via scent machines. A smell may be attractive but it may not just be used for freshening air. One sports goods company once reported that when it first introduced scent into its stores, customers’ intention to purchase increased by 80 percent.
When it comes to the best shopping streets in Paris, scent is just as important to a brand’s success as the quality of its window displays and goods on sales. That is mainly because shopping is a very different experience to what it used to be.
Some years ago, the focus for brand name shopping was on a few people with sales assistants’ disproving attitude and don’t-touch-what-you-can’t-afford displays. Now the rise of electronic commerce (e-commerce) has opened up famous brands to a wider audience. But while e-shops can use sights and sounds, only bricks-and-mortar stores (实体店) can offer a full experience from the minute customers step through the door to the moment they leave. Another brand store seeks to be much more than a shop, but rather a destination. And scent is just one way to achieve this.
Now a famous store uses complex man-made smell to make sure that the soft scent of baby powder floats through the kid department, and coconut scent in the swimsuit section. A department store has even opened a new lab, inviting customers on a journey into the store’s windows to smell books, pots and drawers, in search of their perfect scent.
8. What is an increasingly powerful tool in the success of some brand store?
A. A friendly assistant. B. Unique scents.
C. Soft background music. D. Attractive window display.
9. E-shops are mentioned in the text to _______.
A. show the advantages of brick-and-mortar stores
B. urge shop assistants to change their attitude
C. advise stores to use sights and sounds
D. introduce the rise of e-commerce
10. The underlined word “destination” in Paragraph 5 probably means “______”.
A. a platform that exhibits goods
B. a spot where travelers like to stay
C. a place where customers love to go
D. a target that a store expects to meet
11. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To compare and evaluate. B. To examine and assess.
C. To argue and discuss. D. To inform and explain.
D
Researchers from the Water, Peace and Security partnership (WPS) have announced the creation of a global forecasting tool that can predict where conflicts arising from water insecurity are most likely to break out. The system uses artificial intelligence to create patterns from a wide rage of geographical and socio-economic data and can identify potential conflict hotspots up to a year in advance.
Susan Schme, a senior lecturer at Delft Institute for Water Education, which leads the WPS, explains predicting these types of conflicts isn’t as simple as it might first appear. It isn’t simply a case of conflicts increasing every time a water security incident occurs. Several regional and cultural factors also play a part, making prediction difficult.
The researchers test-ran the AI tool in Mali. They found that it predicted more than three-quarters of the water-related conflicts there. To achieve this, the system is fed with a variety of data. “First there’s the natural side of things—so rainfall data, soil moisture and many other natural factors,” explains Schme. This enables it to identify areas where availability of water is likely to become a concern.
“Then we also look at vulnerability in terms of socio-economic and political developments — anything from a regime type to the state of development in a region,” she adds. This additional information is weighed up to determine whether it increases or decreases the chance of conflict. Other factors might include whether the water insecurity is likely to affect crops.
The tool is just one part of a wider WPS project that aims to increase the availability of information which could help avoid water-related conflicts. Once artificial intelligence has made its predictions the WPS researchers use other analytical tools to zoom-in on a certain region and find out exactly what’s driving water insecurity. This might be decreased rainfall, increased population, or water might be being diverted away from a community.
The designers are now undergoing final tests of the new AI tool to make sure it’s ready for a November launch date. Once widely available, Schme hopes that it will be used by local governments and also by international organizations with an interest in maintaining global stability.
12. What is the function of the tool?
A. Collecting all kinds of data.
B. Predicting conflict hotspots.
C. Ensuring security of water.
D. Stopping breakout of water pipe.
13. How did the AI tool work in Mali?
A. The government discourages it.
B. More improvement is needed.
C. It works quite effectively.
D. It attracts public attention.
14. What is related to the water-related conflicts in Mali?
A. Its climate. B. Its lifestyle.
C. Its agriculture. D. Its population.
15. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. People’s attitude to the AI tool.
B. Study process of the AI tool.
C. Designers of the AI tool.
D. The future of the AI tool.

阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Travelling with friends can be an absolutely amazing experience where you could make lifelong memories or it could end up ruining your friendship. 16 Here are some rules you should follow to make sure your next trip with friends goes as smoothly as possible.
17 Sure, you and your friends probably have some similar interests, but that’s not always the case. In an effort to keep everyone happy, go over travel plans and expectations ahead of time. Have each person categorize activities or sights into “must-see” “want to see” and “would go if we have time”. Plan accordingly and make sure everyone can see some of their top attractions.
Communicate and respect each other. Everyone has personal preferences when travelling — from getting the bed closest to the bathroom or sitting in the airplane’s window seat. But sometimes things don’t go as you like. In this case, share your requirements directly with your travel companions. 18 Have a conversation when problems arise, for communication is the key.
Don’t disappear. When travelling with a group — or even just one other person — you may want some alone time. That’s completely fine, but make sure your friends know where you are and have a way of contacting you. 19
Get off your phone. Of course, your friends will understand if you need to take a call from a family member, or in the event of a work emergency, but other than that, try to stay off your phone. 20 After all, the appeal of this type of trip is to spend time with friends. Just enjoy it!
A. Give each other some space.
B. Include at least one activity for everyone.
C. And remember that consideration and respect go a long way.
D. At the same time, listen to their concerns and be respectful of them.
E. Don’t respond to non-urgent work contact or send messages frequently.
F. It’s especially true of travelling in foreign countries or unfamiliar places.
G. So it’s important to make sure you and your friend(s) are on the same page.

An urgent call came into Jim Green’s bar this past March. A newly married woman who had spent the afternoon at the beach bar, couldn’t find her wallet. She didn’t care about her ID, credit cards, or $150 in cash — but her wedding ring was inside.
Jim, 42, didn’t like the idea that a theft could have occurred at his place. So he set out to find the wallet. He spent hours checking the video tapes from 16 different surveillance cameras(监控摄像机), watching the woman’s every step in the bar until she went to sit on a bench outside and left when her ride arrived. Within minutes, a young man approached the bench, quickly put something in his pocket, and walked off. Jim posted a clip on the bar’s Facebook page. “I just asked if anybody knew who the guy was,” Jim said.
Within hours, Jim got a text from 17-year-old Peter. Peter admitted to having taken the wallet and told Jim he’d done it because he hadn’t eaten in two days. He said he saw the ring but thought it was fake, so he took the money and threw the wallet off the public docks into the ocean. Then he bought a sandwich.
Jim, unsure whether he believed Peter, told the teen to meet him at the docks. There, they got to talking, and Peter revealed that he wasn’t getting along with his family and had been living in the woods for a week. Jim, a father of two, looked closely at Peter — his small height, his ruddy cheeks — and saw him for what he was: more of a kid than a criminal.
But the risks were high. The police were already on the case, and because of the missing ring, Peter could be facing a serious crime charge. “I had to help him somehow,” Jim says.
The police wanted Jim to bring the teen down to the station. Instead, Jim called the police and told them, “He’s going to be at the docks with me tomorrow.”
Paragraph 1
Jim hired two local divers to search the waters where Peter had thrown the wallet.
Paragraph 2
And then a diver popped up.

11. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To compare and evaluate. B. To examine and assess.
C. To argue and discuss. D. To inform and explain.
