As a freelance (自由职业的) writer, the structure f my wrkday can ften vary wildly. Smetimes, it feels as
if I have t much t d — ther days, t little. Yet n matter the shape f my 9 t 5, ne thing remains cnstant:
emails.
Abut a year ag, I fund my email-checking habit had becme mre distracting than usual. When wrking n
my cmputer, I fund myself nervusly checking my phne fr unread emails whenever hitting a mental blck.
Even wrse, during lunch r walks, that habit f checking wuld cme with me, making my breaks an extensin f
the wrkday.
The little red dt n my Gmail app had becme a marker f my prfessinal image: the mre unread emails,
the mre I felt I was failing. By quickly respnding t everyne, I cnvinced myself I was seen as reliable by my
paymasters and therefre wrthy f the wrk I needed t pay my electricity bills, s I culd charge my phne, read
my emails and carry n the endless cycle.
Hwever, speed desn’t always mean quality. I was always cntactable — but at what cst? I tk n t
much wrk, nt allwing myself space t reflect n the value f my wrk. The cntent machine kept running and I
was busy, prducing “wrd salad” nt the internet. Smething needed t change. After a particularly crazy week
f nnstp emailing, I deleted the email app.
The difference was immediately nticeable. I began t rest better. Nw, my wrkdays remain unpredictable,
but I’ve realised that a lack f structure needn’t stp me setting bundaries fr myself. Uninterrupted breaks help
me fcus when I get back t wrk. Taking a few hurs t respnd t messages — instead f just minutes — ften
makes n difference t the sender and allws me t digest the cntent prperly.
I am still surviving as a freelancer in a fast-paced industry, but nw I can spend my time endlessly checking
my phne fr Instagram stries instead.

In the heartland f Japan, where endless green rice fields paint the landscape like a living blanket, a
remarkable frm f artistry has emerged — rice paddy art, a practice that transfrms rdinary farmland int
clurful artwrks. While children and adults alike are delighted by the surprisingly cmplex images, ne might
wnder: what makes the art a reality?
The secret lies in the rice shts. As the plants f different varieties grw, each type prgressively turns a
different clur — ranging frm shades f green t purple r gld — t bring an artwrk t life. These clrful
blcks and lines in fields frm vivid designs: twering muntains, lvely animals, and even famus characters frm
mvies and cartns, which are easily recgnizable frm high places.
The traditin f the paddy art can trace back t just three decades ag in Inakadate, a small Japanese village
where rice has been grwn fr ver 2,000 years. The lcals gt the idea frm the sight f children’s multi-clred
paintings f rice paddies, then transfrmed the cncept and experimented with it in rice planting. Their effrts paid
ff. The paddy fields became turist attractins, greatly bsting the lcal ecnmy.
Creating such art is n simple task. It begins with thrugh planning: artists draft detailed blueprints, mapping
ut exactly the lcatin fr each rice variety. Farmers and vlunteers then wrk side by side, carefully planting rice
shts in accrdance with the plan. Over mnths, the fields demand cnstant care — weeding, watering, and
prtecting the crps.
While Inakadate remains the birthplace f rice paddy art, it nw extends widely acrss Japan. The practice is
als becming all the rage in ther cuntries. In Thailand, ne man even arranged fr a custm piece f art that
spelt ut a message asking his girlfriend t marry him.
Beynd serving as a striking visual display, the paddy art symblizes harmny between traditin and
innvatin. It invites families t experience the beauty f farming, supprts rural cmmunities thrugh turism, and
prves that even the ancient practice can adapt t mdern creativity — all while keeping nature at its cre.

31. Which can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. Mre Harmnius, Mre Artistic

D
The natural wrld prvides humans with essential services. Fr instance, frests channel water int rivers that
irrigate crps while their rts prevent landslides. Over decades, therefre, gvernments have made prmises abut
preserving the wrld’s bidiversity.
Hwever, thse prmises have been brken many times, which has caused the depressing destructin f
natural envirnments. One step twards aviding yet mre disappintment is t emphasize the clse link between
preserving bidiversity and the widely held gal f reaching net-zer carbn emissins. Unfrtunately, less knwn
is the link between them.
Given that bidiversity has an imprtant rle in meeting these carbn-reductin gals, yu might think it
wuld feature highly in the net-zer emissins plans. Nt s. Fr example, faced with tighter regulatin f
emissins, many cmpanies are nw channeling mre time and cash t their firms’ carbn ftprint reductin and
energy transitin, yet the plans have t little t say abut bidiversity.
That needs t change. Safeguarding bidiversity is an efficient way t cntrl carbn emissins. Cmpanies
and investment firms shuld pay mre attentin t the pprtunities frm preserving ecsystems. By investing in
bidiversity — directing capital t prjects that repair an ecsystem — cmpanies can ffset (抵 消 ) their
emissins. By sme estimates, prjects t manage carbn-rich wetlands and t refrest cleared land culd prvide
mre than ne-third f the emissins reductins that are needed t prevent mre than 2℃f glbal warming.
Key t managing mre capital is better measurement s that the link between investment in natural prjects,
bidiversity and carbn is made clear. Tday sme s-called carbn-ffset prjects that invlve firms paying
mney are questinable and nt supprted by evidence. Better guidelines and practice can help and s can new
technlgy. Drnes and satellites can imprve the measurement f bidiversity and accunting systems can
measure hw spending n bidiversity cmpares with puring cash int ther kinds f carbn management.
32. What d we knw abut bidiversity?
A. Its imprtance is undervalued.
B. It is the surce f carbn dixide.
C. Its link with carbn emissins is clear.
D. It gets prmised benefits frm gvernments.
33. Why is “many cmpanies” mentined in paragraph 3?
A. T clarify a rule. B. T explain a plan.
C. T make a cnclusin. D. T supprt an pinin.
34. What is the benefit f safeguarding bidiversity?
A. Redirecting capital. B. Rebuilding wetlands.
C. Transfrming energy. D. Cutting carbn emissins.
35. What message des the writer cnvey in the text?
A. The natural wrld deserves mre investment.
B. It is hard t achieve net-zer carbn emissins.
C. The key t managing capital is new regulatins.
D. It is wrthwhile spending mney n clean energy.
