A few Thursdays ag was a wrap. Fr my brief acting career, that is. One f the benefits f having a writer’s schedule in a city like Paris is the ability t say yes t the randm pprtunities that pp up. When an annuncement flashed acrss a WhatsApp grup that a Hllywd cmedy-thriller was lking fr extras (群演), I thught why nt — and sent in a few headshts.
I had little idea f exactly what t expect. Being an extra ften invlves a lt f waiting and a
mvie set is a phne-free space. In ur case, when we weren’t actively invlved in scenes, but still n set withut ur phnes, what else was there t d but… talk t each ther? There was an intense awareness f many meetings f many eyes. It was glriusly ld schl. A glimpse int what life must have been like befre everyne’s head was leaning frward and staring at the screen while peple wait fr whever they’re waiting fr.
Amng the peple I met were an art student frm Quebec, an early career Parisian actr and a Franc-Dutch prgramme crdinatr. We chatted, we read, we played charades, we gssiped. In between takes, persnalities seemed t pp ut f the surprisingly heavy hitting cast, as well as frm fellw extras. During ne scene, the prgramme crdinatr and I were wandering arund in the backgrund, having a cnversatin. As the scene was sht, and resht, and sht again, it culdn’t help but result in a quick friendship.
It struck me that arund the time I graduated frm cllege, technlgy seemed t stp bringing us tgether. Instead, scial media grabbed and then destryed ur attentin spans. The prcess f
bringing the wrld t life n screen brught us t life in a way that we nrmally ignre. There’s an irny (讽刺) here — playing rles in a faked representatin f the wrld brught us, fr a time, back t what is mst real. And whether I make it int the final cuts r nt, fr that alne, the early mrning wake-ups and the smetimes endless waiting were far mre than wrth it.

      B.In-persn cmmunicatin.
      C.Intense cmpetitin.

What des the authr think f the experience as an extra? A.Time-cnsuming.B.Stress-relieving. C.Rewarding.D.Frustrating.
What is the passage mainly abut?
      Lcked phnes, unlcked cnnectin.
      Faked perfrmances, genuine emtin.

While we race int a future where we utsurce (外包) mst f ur prblem-slving t artificial intelligence, the greatest threat is nt super intelligent machinery. It’s mindlessly putting t much trust in Big Tech and nt enugh trust in the pwer f ur wn minds.
A philsphy f artful thinking is a gd way t avid this. T think artfully means t slve prblems using nt just ur brains, but als ur hands, eyes, and ears, alng with ur emtins. This apprach emplys the cgnitive (认知的) resurces that are spread thrughut ur bdies but ften g unused.
Changing hw we think is hard wrk. And it starts with a mindfulness practice. Accessing artful intelligence requires being mindful f hw we think with ur bdy, hw we use ur limbs (四肢), rgans, and emtins t make sense f the wrld. Be mindful f all the different messages yur
bdy is sending yu as well as the different rles and functins yur bdily actins can play. Fr example, gesturing in cnversatins is nt just cmmunicative. These mvements ften help the speaker t srt ut their thught prcess and assist in getting the wrds ut.
Tday, Big Tech is pushing a message f artificial-intelligence craziness and fear. What makes yu stuck in it? It’s seeing the same things wherever yu lk. Big Tech gives yu screens, hping that yur attentin will always be attracted by their devices. If yu want t find mre freedm in this AI-filled wrld, imprve yur ability t mindfully shift yur attentin between different bjects r levels f fcus. Remember everything is brn f a chice.
Artful thinking demands effrtful mindfulness t ensure that what we d, what we hpe t achieve by using these technlgical tls, will nt weaken ur humanity. As Thich Nhat Hanh said, “Mindful living is an art, and each f us has t train t be an artist.”
What can we learn abut artful thinking?
      It simplifies prblem-slving.
It fcuses n develping ur brains.
It prevents us frm ver-relying n AI.
      It helps prmte high-tech machinery.
What is paragraph 3 mainly abut?
      Benefits f artful intelligence.
The apprach t artful thinking. C.Significance f being mindful.
      D.The challenges f mindfulness practice.
What des the authr suggest we d in the AI-filled wrld?
      Enhance the flexibility f attentin.
Adapt t the rise f AI.
vid the interruptins frm Big Tech. D.Imprve the levels f fcus.
What can be a suitable title fr the text?
      Artful thinking advances big tech.
T much trust in AI harms ur minds.
Physical actins better cgnitive functins. D.Mindfulness keeps us human in the age f AI.

The places inhabited by many species are shifting due t climate change, and these species are mstly tracked by frmal mnitring plans and surveys. Hwever, these traditinal methds may struggle t spt rapid changes, and smetimes verlk urban areas.
A new study led by the University f Exeter examined psts abut Jersey tiger mths n main scial media. The psts reveal that the mths are unexpectedly cmmn in twns and cities. The findings demnstrate hw scial media can help scientists track animal species as they relcate in respnse t climate change.
“Wildlife surveys tend t be dne in rural areas, s their infrmatin desn’t always reflect the vital imprtance f twns and cities,” said Nile Stephensn, wh led the study.
Urban parks and gardens prvide diverse habitats where species like the Jersey tiger mth can grw well. By accunting fr biases (偏差) and gaps in the data, researchers have develped a methd that culd be widely used t track many species — especially thse that share urban envirnments.
“Our study shws that plenty f peple in twns and cities are interested in wildlife, which has the ptential t increase cnnectedness t nature,” said Stephensn, nw at the University f Cambridge. “We als fund sme peple wh are very interested in wildlife and phtgraphy tend t pst images f a wide range f wildlife they see. This prvides a database that scientists can use.”
Stephensn said the public can als help by psting in places such as iNaturalist and iRecrd, as infrmatin frm these is already used in research. The team highlighted limitatins f using scial media, saying it can nly be used t cmplement — nt replace — traditinal mnitring. “Because scial media is s subject t trends, we wuld expect t see bias, such as mre sightings f species that are being widely talked abut,” said Stephensn. “Hwever, we can turn that int a psitive. Fr example, we culd imprve mnitring f invasive (入侵的) species by making
      trends arund recrding sightings.”
What can be learned abut traditinal animal species mnitring?
      It has sme limitatins.
      It isn’t backed by science.
It is nly used in rural areas.
It prves cmplicated t carry ut.
      What des the study find?
Mst nline animal images are unreliable.
Urban envirnments are unsuitable fr animals. C.Wildlife appeals t many peple in urban areas. D.Diverse habitats in the wild are under prtectin.
What des Stephensn stress in the last paragraph?
It’s tugh t mnitr invasive species.
Scial media shuld be prperly used. C.Traditinal mnitring is irreplaceable. D.He is ppsed t emplying scial media.
What is the main idea f the text?
Traditinal wildlife mnitring has fallen ut f date.
The impact f climate change n wildlife is enrmus.
Urban areas play a crucial rle in wildlife cnservatin.
Scial media can help track species as climate changes.

Rituals can prvide cmfrt by ffering
predictability and structure. Sme rituals, such as jurnaling, might als relieve anxiety by giving the writer a fresh perspective r sense f meaning.
18Cnsider trying several bedtime rituals befre settling n a cnsistent rutine. What’s imprtant is figuring ut what wrks fr yu. Start ut with tw r three activities accrding t yur needs and preferences. If yu enjy exercise and mvement, try yga r gentle stretching. If yu find cmfrt in rder, create a t-d list fr the next day. 19
Whether yur bedtime ritual takes place in bed r smewhere else, make sure yur envirnment is relaxing. Wear cmfrtable clthes r pajamas, curl up under a czy blanket, and keep the lights lw. 20
Bedtime rituals can als help yu reduce anxiety.
There’s n fixed frmat fr the perfect bedtime ritual.

Fr adults, bedtime rituals typically last 30 minutes t an hur.
