In a paper published in March in the jurnal Science, David Lazer, Matthew Baum and 14 c-authrs cnsider what we d and dn't knw abut the science f fake news. They define fake news as “made-up infrmatin that imitates news in frm but nt in prcess r intentin”
The paper makes a persuasive case that the investigatin f fake news is timely and imprtant. One cnservative estimate is that in the mnth befre every presidential electin, the average American was expsed t smewhere between ne and three articles frm a knwn publisher f fake news. Anther alarming result is that when it cmes t plitical tpics, tweets cntaining false infrmatin spread mre rapidly and bradly n Twitter than thse cntaining reliable infrmatin.

In a new study published in Science, Stanfrd cmputer scientists shwed that artificial intelligence(AI) large language mdels are sycphantic(阿谀奉承的), when users seek advice n interpersnal dilemmas. Even when users described harmful r illegal behavir, the mdels ften affirmed their chices. “By default(默认情况下), AI advice des nt tell peple that they' re wrng nr give them ‘tugh lve’,” said Myra Cheng, the study's lead authr and a cmputer science PhD student. “I wrry that peple will lse the skills t deal with difficult scial situatins.”
The findings raise cncerns fr the millins f peple discussing their persnal cnflicts with AI. Almst a third f U. S. teens reprt using AI fr “serius cnversatins” instead f reaching ut t ther peple.
After learning that undergraduates were using AI t draft breakup texts and reslve ther relatinship issues, Cheng decided t investigate. Cheng and her team started by measuring hw widespread sycphancy was amng AIs. They evaluated 11 large language mdels, including ChatGPT, Gemini, and DeepSeek. Cmpared t human respnses, all f the AIs affirmed the user's psitin mre frequently. Even when respnding t the harmful requests, the mdels apprved f the prblematic behavir 47% f the time.
“Users are aware that mdels behave in sycphantic ways,” said Dan Jurafsky, the study's senir authr and a prfessr f linguistics. “But what they are nt aware f, and what surprised us, is that sycphancy is making them mre self-centered, mre mrally stubbrn.”
