The Neurrights Fundatin fund that 29 f the 30 cmpanies culd access custmers’ neural data withut prper sharing limits. Tw-thirds allwed fr the sharing f custmer data, almst anther third left this unclear, and just ne cmpany specifically said it wuldn’t. Furthermre, nly 12 f the 30 cmpanies gave custmers bth the right t withdraw permissin fr data prcessing and the right t request data deletin.
Amng firms cntacted fr cmment, a few pushed back n the fundatin’s reprt. The Sweden-based cmpany Flw Neurscience tld New Scientist that it desn’t cllect any neural data. And Tre Azam, funder f the UK-based cmpany MyndPlay, said it never has access t r stres “brainwave data r any ther data” frm custmers. He added that the firm’s sftware runs lcally n devices withut sending any infrmatin t clud cmputing servers.
The prblem is the absence f US gvernment regulatins, says Yuste, in cmparisn with the data privacy prtectins f the Eurpean Unin. But that culd be changing: Clrad became the first US state t add privacy prtectins fr brain data. The Neurrights Fundatin described it as a “game changer”.
