We might be surprised at the prgress made in every field f study, but the methds f testing a persn's knwledge and ability remains as ld as ever they were. It is really extrardinary that after all these years, educatinalists have still failed t design anything mre useful and dependable than examinatins. Even many peple believe that examinatins test what yu knw, it is cmmn knwledge that they mre ften d the ppsite. They may. be a gd means f testing memry, r the skill f wrking rapidly under great pressure, but they can tell yu nthing abut a persn's true ability.
As anxiety-makers, examinatins are secnd t nne. That is because s much depends n them. They are the signs f success r failure in ur sciety. Yur whle future may be decided in nce fateful day. It desn't matter that yu weren't feeling very well, r smething unhappy happened. Little things like that are nt cnsidered: the examinatin ges n. N ne can give his best when he is nt feeling very well, r after a sleepless night, yet this is exactly what the examinatin system expects him t d. The mment a child begins schl he enters a wrld f cmpetitin where success and failure are clearly decided and measured. Can we wnder at the increasing number f "drp-uts": yung peple are written ff as cmplete failures befre they have even started a jb.

At ne time, cmputers were expected largely t remve the need fr paper cpies f dcuments (文件) because they culd be stred electrnically. But fr all the texts that are written, stred and sent electrnically, a lt f them are still ending up n paper.
It is difficult t measure the quantity f paper used as a result f use f Internet-cnnected cmputers , althugh just abut anyne wh wrks in an ffice can tell yu that when e-mail is intrduced, the printers start wrking vertime. "I feel in my bnes this revlutin is causing mre trees t be cut dwn," says Ted Smith f the Earth Village Organisatin.
Perhaps the best sign f hw cmputer and Internet use pushes up demand fr paper cmes frm the high-tech industry itself, which sees printing as ne f its mst prmising new markets. Several Internet cmpanies have been set up t help small businesses print quality dcuments frm a cmputer. Earlier this week Hewlett-Packard C. annunced a plan t develp new technlgies that will enable peple t print even mre s they can get a hard cpy f a business dcument, a medical recrd r just a ne-line e-mail, even if they are nwhere near a cmputer. As the cmpany sees it, the mre use f the Internet the greater demand fr printers.
Des all this mean envirnmental cncerns (环境问题) have been frgtten? Sme activists suggest peple have been led t believe that a lt f dangers t the envirnment have gne away. " I guess peple believe that the prblem is taken care f, because f recycling (回收利用), " said Kelly Quirke, directr f the Rainfrest Actin Netwrk in San Francisc. Yet Quirke is hpeful that high-tech may als prve helpful. He says printers that print n bth sides are grwing in ppularity. The actin grup has als fund acceptable paper made frm materials ther than wd, such as agricultural waste.
60.The grwing demand fr paper in recent years is largely due t .

The Nrwegian Gvernment is ding its best t keep the il industry under cntrl. A nsw
law limits explratin t an area suth f the suthern end f the lng castline; prductin limits
have been laid dwn (thugh these have already been raised ); and il cmpanies have nt been

The effects f the il industry wuld nt be limited t the nrth, hwever. With nearly 100 percent emplyment, everyne can see a develping situatin in which the service industries and the turist industry wiil lse mre f their wrkers t the il industry. Sme smaller industries might even disappear altgether when it becmes cheaper t buy gds frm abrad.
The real argument ver il industry is its effects n the Nrwegian way f life. Farmers and fishermen d nt make up mst f the ppulatin, but they are an imprtant part f it, because Nrwegians see in them many f the qualities that they regard with pride as real Nrwegian. And it is the farmers and the fishermen wh are mst against the il industry because f the damage that it might cause t the sea and t the cuntryside and t the whle cuntry.

      C. help the il cmpanies s many f their prblems
      D. keep the il industry t smething near its present size
      66. Accrding t the passage, the il industry might lead t _________ in nrth
      A. the develpment f industry
      B. a grwth in ppulatin
      C. the failure f the develpment prgram
      D. the develpment f new twns
      67. Nrwegian farmers and fishermen have an imprtant effect because _____
      A. they frm such a large part f Nrwegian sciety
      B. their views f life and value agree with the Nrwegian gvernment's

      D. They regard il as harm t the Nrwegian way f life
