      Reading t neself is a mdern activity which was almst unknwn t the learned in the early days f the histry, while during the fifteenth century the term “reading” undubtedly meant reading alud. Only during the nineteenth century did silent reading becme ppular.
      One shuld be careful, hwever, f suppsing that silent reading came abut simply because reading alud is distractin t thers. Examinatin f reasns cnnected with the histrical develpment f silent reading shws that it became the usual mde f reading fr mst adult reading tasks mainly because the tasks themselves changed in character.
      The last century saw a gradual increase in literacy and thus in the number f readers. As readers increased, s the number f listeners drpped, and thus there was sme reductin in the need t read alud. As reading fr the benefit f listeners grew less cmmn, s came the ppularity f reading as a private activity in such public places as libraries, trains and ffices, where reading alud wuld disturb ther readers in a way.
      Twards the end f the century there was still heated argument ver whether bks shuld be used fr infrmatin r treated respectfully, and ver whether the reading f material such as newspapers was in sme way mentally weakening. Indeed this argument remains with us still in educatin. Hwever, whatever its advantages, the ld shared literacy culture had gne and was replaced by the printed mass media n the ne hand and by bks and magazines fr a specialized readership n the ther.
      By the end f the century students were being advised t have sme new ideas f bks and t use skills in reading them which were nt prper, if nt impssible, fr the ral reader. The scial, cultural, and technlgical develpments in the century had greatly changed what the term "reading" referred t.
