A few days later, when she was ut f the classrm, Henry wrte fur lines f encuraging wrds in her
diary, the ppsite f every wrd she had written in his neat handwriting: “Yu are great. Yu are beautiful. Yu are
intelligent. Yu are lved.” After finishing writing, he clsed the diary gently, making sure the pages were exactly
as he had fund them, then slipped it quietly back int her desk drawer, leaving n trace f his visit. When she
returned t the classrm and flipped pen her diary later that day, thse fur warm sentences jumped ut at her.
She stared at the familiar handwriting fr a lng mment, and befre she knew it, tears had blurred her visin,
rlling dwn her cheeks.
Several weeks later, Henry had t leave the schl t jin the navy, as he had been selected fr a military
service prgram he had applied fr a year earlier. He left withut saying gdbye t Mary, nt wanting t draw
extra attentin t her.
