Suth Baltimre is ften thught f as a place t avid — peple are taught t be careful f it. There was a mass shting this past July, and anther in early September.
“Peple think Curtis Bay is a dangerus place. It’s nt. It’s just we’re surrunded by dangerus things,” says Taysia Thmpsn, 17.
Taysia, is ne f the Free Yur Vice members, a grup f student activists fighting against a very different kind f danger in their neighbrhd: air pllutin and climate change. Nw, the fcus f their mvement is the muntains f cal. Cal releases a fine, black dust small enugh t get int peple’s lungs. It makes respiratry (呼吸的) diseases wrse, r can even cause disease and premature death. And there are the greenhuse gas emissins after the cal is burned.
The teens f Free Yur Vice are taking n a big ppnent (对手): the massive gds transprtatin cmpany CSX, which transprted mre than 8 millin tns f cal thrugh Suth Baltimre in 2021. The gal is t eventually get the state regulatrs t deny the permit that CSX needs t perate, r at least require the cmpany t enclse all the cal, r at the very least put water nt all f it s there’s less dust blwing arund.
This past summer, Taysia and three ther students spent their time gathering evidence t try and get the cal pllutin ut f their neighbrhd. They used sticky paper t gather samples f dust frm all ver the neighbrhd t prve that the dust is frm cal. They are als sending dust samples t a scientist in Califrnia, wh uses an electrn micrscpe t cmpare the dust that’s in this neighbrhd t samples frm the piles f cal at the terminal in Suth Baltimre t see if it matches.
The students nw have supprt frm their cmmunity. But the respnses frm fficials have nt been very satisfying. “Everyne is just breathing the air. And we will keep fighting.” says Taysia.
24. Why are the mass shtings mentined at the beginning?
A. T give an example.
B. T explain a phenmenn.
C. T justify an assumptin.
D. T pse a cntrast.
25. What is the minimum gal the teens f Free Yur Vice hpe t achieve?
A. Scientists will use a micrscpe t examine the dust samples.
B. Officials will refuse the cmpany CSX the peratin permit.
C. State regulatrs will keep fighting against pllutin.
D. The cmpany CSX will reduce dust by watering the cal.
26. What can be inferred abut the students’ campaign?
A. They stpped the cal transprt.
B. It isn’t all plain sailing.
C. The cmmunity turned against them.
D. The teens lack slid evidence.
27. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?
A. Teens Fight Against Cal Pllutin.
B. A Dangerus Place t Avid.
C. Hw t Stp Mass Shtings.
D. The Health Effects f Cal Dust.

Imagine ging t bed at 2AM with a 6 AM alarm. Yu may expect a day f aching eyes and cluded thughts, but is it pssible t wake up feeling clear-headed and psitive? We live in a wrld bsessed with the glden 8 hurs f sleep. But what if the secret t feeling refreshed has little t d with hw much we have actually slept? A wave f new research suggests that, in many cases, the way we think abut sleep matters mre than the hurs we get.
T test this, a UCLA study tracked 249 peple with depressin fr 13 weeks, cmparing their actual sleep time with their self-reprts. The mismatch between the tw sets f data was striking. Many peple claimed they had slept terribly but the bjective data shwed therwise. Interestingly, when participants perfrmed cgnitive (认知) tests, it was the self-reprted sleep quality that predicted their perfrmance, rather than the bjective sleep data. In ther wrds, the belief that they had slept badly weakened their thinking the next day mre than the sleep itself.
This phenmenn, where beliefs create real physical effects, is similar t the placeb effect (安慰剂效应). In a 2021 experiment, researchers secretly adjusted clcks. Thse wh thught they slept 8 hurs but nly gt 5 perfrmed better n reactin-time tests than thse wh gt 8 hurs but thught they slept 5. Brain scans cnfirmed that believing they slept well reduced “sleep drive” signals, making them mre clear-headed and energetic.
S, hw can we cntrl this “sleep mindset”? Researcher Nicle Tang fund that the quality f ur sleep changes based n ur daytime experiences. In her study, peple wh engaged in psitive physical activity during the day tended t rate their previus night’s sleep as better, even if it was bjectively pr. This suggests that frcing yurself t exercise r stay active after a bad night’s sleep can actually reshape yur memry f it.
Furthermre, practicing mindfulness, r questining the rigid “8-hur rule” can fster a mre psitive mindset. While getting enugh sleep is ideal, knwing that yur mindset matters might unlck greater energy, resetting yur brain fr a clear and psitive day.
28. What did the UCLA study find abut peple with depressin?
A. Their actual sleep time was lnger than they reprted.
B. Their thinking was mainly shaped by bjective sleep data.
C. Believing they slept prly hurt thinking mre than actual sleep.
D. Their self-reprted sleep quality was cmpletely unreliable.
29. What can be inferred frm Nicle Tang’s finding?
A. Staying active after pr sleep helps peple feel better.
B. Daytime experiences have little influence n sleep quality.
C. Peple’s memry f sleep is always accurate.
D. Exercise can directly imprve the actual duratin f sleep.
30. What is the authr’s attitude tward the “8-hur rule”?
A. Supprtive.B. Critical.
C. Neutral.D. Indifferent.
31. What is the main idea f the passage?
A. Our sleep mindset affects hw refreshed we feel.
B. Day exercise can replace night sleep needs.
C. Actual sleep time is vital fr mental health.
D. Depressed peple ften misreprt their sleep.
D
Lithium-in (锂离子) batteries pwer everything frm smartphnes t electric cars and renewable energy strage. Hwever, lithium is insufficient and cncentrated in limited regins. T meet the grwing demand fr clean energy, scientists are explring sdium-in batteries as a sustainable alternative.
Sdium, fund in large quantities in seawater and salt mines, is cheaper and mre widely available than lithium. Yet, sdium-in batteries face a majr technical prblem. Sdium-ins are three times larger than lithium-ins, making them slwer t mve and harder t stre within battery electrdes (电极). This reduces energy density, meaning sdium batteries require larger sizes t match lithium’s capacity. Scientists are handling this challenge thrugh new materials.
One fcus is imprving the ande (negative electrde). Traditinal lithium batteries use graphite (石墨), which struggles t stre sdium. Scientists nw use “hard carbn”, a prus material, which allws sdium-ins t pass thrugh its numerus tiny gaps. Adding tin t hard carbn further bsts strage capacity. Fr the cathde (psitive electrde), new materials like layered metal xides r rganic cmpunds shw prmise. Fr example, a durable rganic cathde named TAQ has achieved high energy density and stability ver thusands f charging cycles.
Recent prgress is encuraging. Sme cmmercial sdium batteries nw stre 170-200 watt-hurs per kilgram (Wh/kg), clse t lw-end lithium batteries (200-300Wh/kg). Majr cmpanies like CATL in China plan large-scale prductin, targeting renewable energy strage and electric vehicles.
Hwever, challenges remain. Even tp sdium batteries still lag behind advanced lithium mdels in perfrmance. Falling lithium prices, driven by versupply, and existing manufacturing infrastructure (基础设施) als weaken sdium’s cst advantage. Experts emphasize the need fr breakthrughs, such as replacing expensive materials like vanadium.
Despite challenges, many believe sdium batteries have a bright future. As research advances, they culd becme a key player in building a greener ecnmy. “We’re still in the early days f understanding sdium’s chemistry,” says Dan Steingart, a battery chemist, “but the ptential is undeniable.”
32. Why is sdium cnsidered a better resurce than lithium?
A. It prvides higher energy density.
B. It is simpler and safer t get.
C. It is mre affrdable and abundant.
D. It allws faster charging cycles.
33. What des the underlined wrd “prus” mean in Paragraph 3?
A. Full f small hles.B. Stable and rugh.
C. Large in capacity.D. Extremely dense.
34. Why is sdium’s cst advantage currently limited?
A. Sdium batteries need rare materials fr prductin.
B. Lithium prices have drpped greatly due t rich supply.
C. Glbal lithium reserves are sufficient fr large-scale use.
D. Sdium batteries require cmplex manufacturing prcesses.
35. What is the main purpse f the text?
A. T criticize lithium batteries fr their envirnmental harm.
B. T warn against relying n renewable energy strage.
C. T prmte rganic cathdes as an alternative slutin.
D. T highlight sdium’s ptential despite current limitatins.
