Dr. Jane Gdall, a wrld-renwned ethlgist, cnservatinist, and activist, dedicated her life t fstering a deeper understanding f the natural wrld.
Frm earliest childhd, Jane’s mther encuraged her fascinatin with animals. One f her mst belved cmpanins was a stuffed ty chimpanzee, named Jubilee. In what her mther referred t as “Jane’s first animal research prgram,” she fund Jane in bed with a handful f earthwrms, trying t understand hw they culd pssibly mve withut legs. Yung Jane immersed herself in bks abut wild animals and dreamed f a life alngside African wildlife like Tarzan and Dr. Dlittle.
At the yung age f 23, after having spent the past few years as a waitress and secretary, she finally fund a way t make her dream a reality. She eagerly accepted a schlmate’s invitatin t the family farm in Kenya in 1957 and later ventured int what was then called the Gmbe Stream Chimpanzee Reserve—embarking n a jurney that wuld redefine the relatinship between humans and ther animals.
Taking an unrthdx apprach, she immersed herself in the chimpanzee’s habitat. After mnths f trying t gain their trust, she was able t experience their cmplex sciety as a neighbur, rather than a distant bserver. She then further departed frm scientific cnventin by giving them names instead f numbers. She came t understand them nt nly as a species, but as individuals with persnalities, cmplex minds, emtins, and lng-term bnds. One day, in Octber 1960, she saw the chimpanzee she named David Greybeard use grass stems t fashin tls fr fishing insects frm their nest. Up until that enlightening mment, mainstream scientists thught humans were the nly species t make and use tls, having defined us as “Man the Tlmaker.” Her insights rcked the scientific wrld.
In 1977, she funded the Jane Gdall Institute, spreading her cnservatin visin arund the wrld. Recgnised as a glbal icn, Jane was the authr f several bks that have engaged an internatinal readership and the recipient f numerus hnurs. Gdall passed away n Octber 1, 2025, aged 91. Her wrds, “Every individual has a rle t play. Every individual makes a difference,” cntinue t inspire millins t prtect ur planet.

B.It prved chimpanzees culd cmmunicate with humans.
C.It challenged a lng-held belief abut human uniqueness.
D.It revealed the emtinal bnds within chimpanzee families.
27.What message des Jane Gdall’s life stry cnvey?

C.Mre haste, less speed.D.Practice makes perfect.
The age f pre-srting mixed plastic waste may sn be ver. The secret weapn is a cheap catalyst (催化剂) targeting the mst prblematic plastic. The findings are detailed in a study published in the jurnal Nature Chemistry.
Even after decades f wrldwide effrts, recycling plastic remains much easier said than dne. The frustrating reality is largely thanks t plylefins (聚烯烃). Humans make abut 220 millin tns f plylefin-based prducts every year, mst f which are single-use items like milk bttles, trash bags, and juice bxes.
Hwever, less than 10 percent f plylefin prducts are recycled annually, resulting in muntains f waste destined fr landfills r being burnt. That’s because while ther plastics are typically brken dwn with catalysts, breaking dwn plylefin is difficult due t its tugh carbn-carbn mlecular bnds (分子键). “Plylefins dn’t have any weak links. Every bnd is incredibly strng and chemically unreactive,” said Ysi Kratish, a chemist at Nrthwestern University.
Meanwhile, burning plylefins requires temperatures as high as 700℃. “Everything can be burned, f curse,” said Kratish. “But we wanted t find an elegant way t add the minimum amunt f energy t btain the maximum value prduct.” A ptential slutin cmbining hydrgen gas and a catalyst can decnstruct plylefin plastic int useful hydrcarbns, but the prcess als invlves high temperatures and expensive catalysts. But Kratish’s team fund a wrkarund.
Unlike rare metals, engineers discvered that an alternative called catinic nickel (阳离子镍) is cheap and easy t cllect. Other nickel-based catalysts include multiple reactin sites. Catinic nickel’s single-site variant allws it t functin mre like a precise sharp knife. Instead f breaking dwn all f a plastic’s structure, this ptin specifically targets thse carbn-carbn bnds at a much lwer temperature and with half the hydrgen gas pressure.
“That is amazing. It’s definitely nt smething anybdy expected” Kratish said. If prven t be scalable (可规模化) and efficient, the new catalyst culd largely cut dwn the need fr plastic pre-srting while als reducing the amunt f micrplastics released int the envirnment every day.
28.Recycling plylefin remains difficult due t its ________.
A.industrial valueB.practical applicatinC.chemical structureD.envirnmental impact
29.What des “an elegant way” in paragraph 4 refer t?
A.Cmbining hydrgen gas with catinic nickel.B.Decnstructing plylefins int hydrcarbns.
C.Burning plylefins at a high temperature.D.Breaking dwn all f a plastic’s structure.
30.What is the advantage f catinic nickel ver ther catalysts?
A.It avids many steps f prcessing.B.It perates effectively at a lwer cst.
C.It breaks dwn all types f plastic.D.It prduces higher quality end prducts.
31.What is the passage mainly abut?
A.The challenge f recycling plylefins.B.The prcess f breaking carbn bnds.
C.A basic thery f applying catalysts.D.A new methd f recycling plylefins.
In August, deep in the frests f Mtu cunty in the Xizang autnmus regin, a plant unlike any seen befre was fund grwing in a crack between muntain rcks. With its delicate white flwers and a structure never previusly dcumented, the species — later cnfirmed as a new genus (属) named Paramicrtena X. X. Wu &. Qiang Wang — marked a breakthrugh in Himalayan bidiversity studies.
The discvery was made by Wu Xuexue, a PhD candidate at the Institute f Btany, Chinese Academy f Sciences, and ne f a grwing number f yung scientists cnducting frntline studies in Xizang.
Xizang has nw becme a center f eclgical research. With the supprt f natinal bidiversity prtectin strategies — including the establishment f 47 nature reserves and the funding f its first gene bank — the regin ffers fertile grund fr scientific explratin. Wu’s jurney int the muntains f Xizang began with the Flra f the Pan-Himalaya prject, an internatinal btanical initiative led by her instructr, Wang Qiang, a senir plant expert. “Every plant in Xizang tells a stry f survival,” Wu said. “Thrugh research, I wanted t understand hw they adapt t such a severe envirnment — and hw we can prtect them.”
Her discvery f Paramicrtena X. X. Wu &. Qiang Wang was n mere luck. Wu and her team went thrugh thick undergrwth near Beibeng Muntain, where fg rlled in frm the Yarlung Zangb Grand Canyn. At arund 800 meters abve sea level, she sptted several small labiates in a narrw wet rck crack. The flwers seemed rdinary, almst unremarkable. But Wu’s inner vice tld her therwise. That evening, she phtgraphed the flwers’ key features and sent the images t Wang. “The mment I saw them, I knew this was extrardinary,” Wang recalled.
Wu and her team represent a new generatin f scientists devted t uncvering Xizang’s natural wealth. “Their wrk is mre than academic — it strengthens China’s rle in glbal bidiversity cnservatin and inspires yung peple t shulder respnsibility fr the natin’s eclgical future,” Wang said.
