I’ve always enjyed walking. Hwever, never did I imagine I’d end up walking ver 200 kilmeters in 10 days, becming a fan f walking hlidays, and develping self-guided hiking rutes in Prtugal as part f my business.
I used t be smene wh was cntent with an easy three-hur walk, but I became an experienced multi-day (多日的) hiker. My change began with a taste f the Prtuguese Camin de Santiag, an ancient rute thrugh Prtugal t Santiag de Cmpstela Cathedral in Spain.
Back in 2013, I did a guided ne-day hike alng ne f the mst beautiful sectins f the Camin, nrth f Pnte de Lima. It’s als ne f the mst challenging s it was hard wrk, but the views frm the tp f Labruja Muntain made the climb wrthwhile.
My guides were s crazy abut the excitement f arriving at Santiag de Cmpstela Cathedral after the challenges f day after day n the Camin that I began t think I might want t give it a try.
Fast frward a few years, I set ff frm Barcels with a friend f mine t fllw the Prtuguese Camin de Santiag.
Apart frm suffering frm back pain, I thught I was quite fit. Hwever, nthing had prepared me fr hw I wuld feel at the end f each walking day. We were averaging abut 20 kilmeters per day. When we reached ur htel, I hardly had enugh energy t take a shwer r find fd. I had expected plenty f sightseeing, but it turned ut t be very little.
Quickly, I realized the takeaway f this unique travel experience: The Camin was all abut making the mst f the jurney rather than the destinatin. Fr me, that was quite a change in thinking as I was usually all abut getting t where I wanted t be as sn as pssible s that I culd start explring. It was, perhaps, als my first step n the path twards mindfulness.

Emjis (表情符号) feel harmless in daily chats, but inside wrkplace messages, they carry mre weight than mst peple expect. A study frm the University f Ottawa takes a clser lk at this hidden effect.
Researchers created simple wrkplace messages. Sme were psitive, sme neutral, and sme negative. Then they added emjis r left them ut cmpletely. Participants read these messages and judged the sender. A sentence like “We have great new ffice chairs” culd appear with a smiley face, an angry face, r n emji at all.
The researchers fund that peple paid clse attentin t bth the wrds and the emji. Even a small mismatch between the tw std ut immediately. Surprisingly, the safest ptin was the simplest ne. Readers saw the sender f messages withut emjis as capable (有能力的) and serius. Psitive emjis did nt hurt much, but they did nt help much, either. If the message already sunded gd, adding a smiley face did nt imprve the impressin. Negative emjis, hwever, tld a different stry. One angry face was enugh t drag dwn hw capable the sender appeared. It clred the entire message, even if the sentence itself sunded fine.
The study fund that peple reacted strngly t mixed signals. Imagine reading a cmplaint with a cheerful emji at the end. This mismatch creates cnfusin and that uncertainty weakens trust. Over time, it can even affect teamwrk. Even when the emji matches the message, negative nes still leaves a bad impressin.
S, shuld yu stp using emjis at wrk? Nt necessarily. But yu shuld think befre using them. A simple, clear message ften des the jb best. Psitive emjis can wrk in light, friendly cnversatins. Negative emjis are risky and usually nt wrth it. Mst imprtantly, fcus n what yu want t say. If yur message is strng, it des nt need decratin. If yur message is unclear, an emji will nt fix it.
      28. What were the participants asked t d in the study?
      A. Interact with the senders.B. Create new messages.
      C. Add sme emjis.D. Make judgements.
      29. Accrding t the study, messages withut emjis are prbably cnsidered ________.
      A. bringB. less seriusC. prfessinalD. mre unacceptable
      30. Which f the fllwing des the authr agree with?
      A. Yur message matters mst.B. Yu shuld avid using any emji.
      C. Negative emjis are always valuable.D. Strng messages require decratin.
      31. What is the best title fr the text?
      A. Shuld Yu Use Emjis at Wrk?B. Why Shuld Yur Messages Be Clear?
      C. The Hidden Danger f Wrkplace EmjisD. Hw t Imprve Yur Prfessinal Image
      D
Bananas are ne f the mst ppular fruits in the wrld. Nw, hwever, a new survey shws that the part mst peple thrw ut — the peel (皮)— might just be a pwerhuse fertilizer (肥料). The survey study led by Nkuthula Khanyile f the University f Mpumalanga in Suth Africa lked at ver 120 studies n the use f banana peels as fertilizer and fund that when used as fertilizer, this waste culd benefit all srts f plants.
Bananas are high in three main nutrients (营养物) that plants require t grw well — ptassium, nitrgen, and magnesium. In fact, thse are the main elements cntained in cmmercial fertilizer used by farmers. S it is n surprise that the survey shwed that fertilizers based n bananas resulted in plants that were taller and leafier than thse grwn withut banana peel fertilizers.
The varius studies that were surveyed explred hw t use banana peels as fertilizer. In sme studies, the peels were turned int a mixture f banana peels and a few additives. In ther studies, the peels were sun-dried and then grund int a pwder that culd be mixed in with sil. In anther study, the peels were left t break dwn naturally with cffee grunds, which makes it pssible fr nutrients t be released int the grund at a slightly slwer rate.
Mdern farming relies heavily n cmmercial fertilizers which are made in factries that run n cal, il, r gas. In additin, nitrgen run-ff frm these fertilizers pllutes water and creates algae blms (藻华) which are detrimental t ther living things in water.
Banana peels are a natural waste prduct. They d nt need cal, il, r gas t be prduced, and they release nutrients at a much slwer rate than cmmercial fertilizers, which prbably means less run-ff and less pllutin. Anyway yu lk at it, using banana peel-based fertilizers is a win-win.
      32. Why can banana peels benefit plants?
      A. They remve unnecessary leaves.
      B. They can prtect plants frm sunburn.
      C. They cntain elements helping plants grwth.
      D. They release nutrients faster than cmmercial fertilizers.

      B. Ways t turn banana peels int fertilizer.
      C. Hw t make use f banana peel fertilizers.
      D. The prcess f carrying ut the survey study.
      34. What des the underlined wrd “detrimental” in paragraph 4 mean?
      A. Harmful.B. Similar.C. Adaptable.D. Significant.
      35. What is the authr’s purpse in writing the text?
      A. T ffer a slutin t water pllutin.
      B. T prve the value f natural fertilizers.
      C. T explre the health benefits f a fruit.
      D. T call fr the reuse f a kind f waste.
