21.(6分) It’s 3 ’clck and yu’ve been hard at wrk. As yu sit at yur desk, a strng desire fr chclate vercmes yu. Yu try t busy yurself t make it g away. But it desn’t. Here is anther situatin. Perhaps yu are nt feeling well. The nly thing yu want t eat is a big bwl f chicken sup, like yur mum used t make when yu were sick as a child. Fd cravings are a strng desire fr a specific type f fd. And they are nrmal.
Scientists at the website Hw Stuff Wrks cmpare hunger and cravings this way. Hunger is a fairly simple cnnectin between the stmach and the brain. They even call it simply “stmach hunger”. When ur stmachs burn up all f the fd we have eaten, a hrmne (激素) sends a message t ne part f the brain fr mre fd, which regulates ur mst basic bdy functins such as thirst, hunger and sleep. The brain then prduces a chemical t start the appetite and yu eat. Hunger is a functin f survival.
A craving is mre cmplex. It activates brain areas related t emtin, memry and reward. These are the same areas f the brain activated during drug-craving studies. Because f this, sme scientists call fd cravings “mind hunger”. Peple ften crave fds that are high in fat and sugar. Fds that are high in fat r high in sugar prduce chemicals in the brain. These chemicals give us feelings f pleasure.
In a 2007 study, researchers at Cambridge University fund that dieting r restricted eating generally increases the pssibility f fd cravings. S, the mre yu deny yurself a fd that yu want, the mre yu may crave it. Hwever, fasting (禁食) is a bit different. They fund that eating n fd at all fr a shrt perid f time lessened fd cravings.
S, the next time yu crave smething very specific, knw that yur brain may be mre t blame than yur stmach.

22.(8分)Energy independence. It has a nice ring t it. Desn’t it? If yu think s, yu’re nt alne, because energy independence has been the dream f American president fr decades, and never mre s than in the past few years, when the mst recent il price shck has been partly respnsible fr kicking ff the great recessin(经济衰退).
“Energy independence” and its rhetrical (修辞的) cmpanin “energy security” are, hwever, slippery cncepts that are rarely thugh thrugh. What is it we want independence frm, exactly?
Mst peple wuld prbably say that they want t be independent frm imprted il. But there are reasns that we buy all that ld frm elsewhere.
The first reasn is that we need it t keep ur ecnmy running. Yes, there is a trickle(涓涓细流)f bifuel(生物燃料)available, and mre may becme available, but mst bifuels cause ecnmic waste and envirnmental destructin.
Secnd, Americans have basically decided that they dn’t really want t prduce all their wn il. They value the envirnmental quality they preserve ver their il imprts frm abrad. Vast areas f the United States are ff-limits t il explratin and prductin in the name f envirnmental prtectin. T what extent are Americans really willing t endure the envirnmental impacts f dmestic energy prductin in rder t cut back imprts?
Third, there are benefits t trade. It allws fr ecnmic efficiency, and when we buy things frm places that have lwer prductin csts than we d, we benefit. And althugh yu dn’t read abut this much, the United States is als a large exprter f il prducts, selling abut 2 millin barrels f petrleum prducts per day t abut 90 cuntries.
There is n questin that the United States imprts a great deal f energy and, in fact, relies n that steady flw t maintain its ecnmy. When that flw is interrupted, we feel the pain in shrt supplies and higher prices, At the same time, we derive massive ecnmic benefits when we buy the mst affrdable energy n the wrld market and when we engage in energy trade arund the wrld.
1、What des the authr say abut energy independence fr America?

C.They d nt prvide a sustainable energy supply.
D.They cause serius damage t the envirnment.

A.It wants t expand its strage f crude il.
B.Its wn il reserves are quickly running ut.
C.It wants t keep its wn envirnment undamaged.
D.Its wn il prductin falls shrt f demand.

Researchers in New Yrk did nt find an actual funtain f yuth, but they may have fund a way t turn back the aging prcess. It appears that the answer may be called the hypthalamus, which is part f yur brain. It cntrls imprtant bdy activities, including grwth, the way we prcess fd and s n.
Researchers at New Yrk’s Albert Einstein Cllege f Medicine fund that hypthalamus neural stem cells (干细胞) als influence hw fast aging takes place.
Dngsheng Cai, a prfessr at the Albert Einstein Cllege f Medicine, was the leading researcher in a study n aging in mice. He and his team reprted their findings.
“Aging speed can be cntrlled by a particular place in the bdy, which is the hypthalamus. And it can be cntrlled by a particular type f cells, which are hypthalamus stem cells.” He adds that when the hypthalamus starts aging, s des the bdy. S when hypthalamus functin is in decline, particularly the lss f hypthalamus stem cells, and this prtectin against the aging develpment is lst, it eventually leads t aging.
Using this infrmatin, the researchers began trying t activate the hypthalamus in labratry mice. They did this by injecting the animals with stem cells.
The researchers say the results shw that the treatment slwed aging in the animals. “When we injected the hypthalamus stem cells t the middle-aged mice, the mice aged slwly and they can als live lnger.”
But these results were just frm studying mice in a labratry. If the mice can live lnger, des that mean peple culd have lnger lives? The next step is t see if the anti-aging effects als wrk in human beings.
“If we can translate what we have seen in animals t humans, I think humans can functin better during later ages.” Cai and his team say their studies may have ther benefits. They say the findings culd lead t new ways t help dctrs identify and treat any number f age-related health issues.

I referred t Prfessr Ruan, my vilin teacher, wh intrduced the vilin t me 14 years ag. This 85-year-ld man rhapsdized abut (热烈赞美) the legend f Antni Stradivari. “His vilins are the mst beautiful wrks human has ever crafted.” “Make a vilin with yur wn hands,” Prfessr Ruan suggested,“When yu play it, yu’ll knw.”

Music flwed suddenly s beautifully that fr a mment I dubted my wn ears. Slwly I pened my eyes, and with surprise fund the fairy f my childhd fantasy dancing t my music — the tw-year-ld daughter f the master.
Prfessr Ruan was right. I didn’t find beauty until I played music with the vilin, because beauty isn’t in the instrument itself. It’s just here, deep dwn, in urselves.
