The iGEM Cmpetitin is an annual glbal event in synthetic (合成的) bilgy designed fr students frm high schl t graduate level. It gives participants the pprtunity t push the bundaries f science by tackling everyday issues facing the wrld. Wrking in multidisciplinary teams, students design, build, and test bilgical systems f their wn using standard mlecular (分子的) bilgy techniques. The cmpetitin is mre than just lab wrk. iGEM teams wrk hard t make a psitive cntributin t their cmmunities. This year, ver 11,000 peple are expected t dedicate mnths f energy t their prjects.
T help students g thrugh the prcess, iGEM prvides a general “Cmpetitin Cycle”. The first phase typically runs frm February t May. During these mnths, teams fcus n fundatinal tasks such as fundraising, brainstrming prject ideas, and determining their gals. It is als a critical time fr students t read the cmpetitin requirements carefully t ensure their designs meet the standards.
As summer arrives, the wrk intensifies. Frm June t August, teams mve int the lab t build their designs and run experiments. At the same time, they must dcument their prgress n digital platfrms.
The final phase ccurs between September and Nvember. After analyzing their results, teams finalize their dcumentatin and practice their presentatins, preparing fr the final challenge at the Grand Jambree.

Carrying his “sund hunter’s” backpack with a headset, a recrder, and fifteen specialized micrphnes, Charles Rse sets ut t explre Lyn’s Tête d’Or Park. He places his micrphne against a rck as if taking its pulse (脉搏). He is fcused, listening t a language nly he seems t understand.
Charles Rse is an audi naturalist. In his ears, trees whisper with human-like vices, queen bees cry, and ant nests crackle (噼啪作响) like campfires.
His jurney began in 2019 during a trip t Nrway. While searching fr sunds t sample fr his musical cmpsitins, he fund himself attracted by the natural sundscapes. That trip became the turning pint: he started recrding flwing rivers, wden churches, and animal calls. These recrdings sn became albums f their wn. Frm them, he builds a “sund library” that reflects the richness f ecsystems wrldwide.
Mnths ag, he traveled t the Tuvalu islands in the Suth Pacific where 95% f the area culd be submerged by the end f the century. He recrded everything: the wind, the waves, the birds, the trees, the silence between sunds. These sunds nw live in a sund bank that will immrtalize the island’s memry and keep it lng after the land disappears.
Tday, ver 40,000 species are threatened by climate change, accrding t the latest reprt by the Internatinal Unin fr Cnservatin f Nature. Fr Rse, recrding nature is a frm f cnservatin. “By capturing the sund f an insect mving under ur feet,” he says, “I want t make the living being mre alive in the eyes f humans. I believe the mre we listen, the mre we respect.”
Night is abut t fall n the park as the rain arrives. While Sunday walkers rush fr cver, Charles Rse smiles and excitedly heads t the pnd. He kneels at the water’s edge, lwers a micrphne beneath the surface, puts n his headset, and clses his eyes.

The stry f the Zeigarnik Effect began in a busy restaurant in Vienna in the 1920s. Bluma Zeigarnik, a Russian psychlgist, was dining with her prfessrs when she nticed smething fascinating abut the waiters. They had an incredible ability t remember lng, cmplex rders frm multiple tables withut writing anything dwn. Hwever, Zeigarnik bserved a strange detail: as sn as the bill was paid and the custmers left, the waiters instantly frgt the rders.
Curius, Zeigarnik asked a waiter abut a party he had just served. The waiter simply said he culdn’t remember a single dish. He explained that he nly held the infrmatin in his mind as lng as the rder was “pen.” Once the task was cmpleted, his brain deleted the data t make rm fr new custmers.
Interested by this bservatin, Zeigarnik returned t her lab t cnduct a series f experiments. She asked participants t perfrm simple tasks, such as slving puzzles r stringing beads (串珠子). Halfway thrugh, she interrupted sme f them, leaving their tasks unfinished.
Her findings cnfirmed her suspicin (怀疑): peple remembered the interrupted tasks nearly twice as well as the cmpleted nes. She cncluded that an unfinished task creates a state f mental stress in the brain. This tensin keeps the task active in ur memry, cnstantly reminding us until we finish it. Psychlgists named this phenmenn the “Zeigarnik Effect.”
While this effect can cause anxiety - keeping us awake at night thinking abut unread emails-it can als be a pwerful tl fr prductivity. One f the biggest bstacles t wrking is prcrastinatin (拖延), ften caused by the fear f a large, difficult prject.
The Zeigarnik Effect ffers a simple slutin: set the prcess in mtin. Yu dn’t need t finish the prject; yu just need t take the first small step. Once yu begin, the “psychlgical tensin” kicks in. Yur brain will naturally want t fill the mental gap, making it much easier t keep wrking. In this way, the same mental mechanism that causes anxiety can be used effectively t help us achieve ur gals.
28.What can be learned abut the waiters’ memry?
A.It was better than that f the prfessrs.
B.It functined best when rders were written dwn.
C.It was mre fcused n unfinished wrk.
D.It disappeared quickly when they were under stress.
29.What can we cnclude frm Zeigarnik’s lab experiments?

C.Finish the mst difficult part f the jb first.
D.Activate the brain’s drive by getting started.
Culture is widely regarded as the permanent part f a natin. This belief nce helped Australia develp a clear awareness f its unique identity. Recently, hwever, this trend has gne int reverse (反转). Tday, the humanities-subjects like literature, histry and music-are increasingly cnsidered t be f little practical value in the mdern wrld.
This shift became bvius with a 2021 higher educatin plicy. T encurage students t majr in science and technlgy subjects, which are believed t drive future prgress in the age f the internet and artificial intelligence, the Australian gvernment greatly lwered their fees. Meanwhile, the cst f studying humanities and media was raised by ver 100 percent. Interestingly, this financial push had little impact, with nly a tiny number f students changing their plans. Peple generally knw their wn talents, and simply chse subjects that suit their natural abilities.
Despite this lack f student interest in switching, universities themselves are cntinuing the attack n humanities educatin t cut csts. At the Australian Natinal University, plans are in prgress t cut dwn peratins. Traditinal music prgrams are being reduced, and imprtant humanities research centers, which nce enjyed high reputatins fr bringing schlars tgether, are being clsed. Even a key prject designed t recrd the histry f Australian English might be abandned. Defending these cuts, university managers argue that these cultural prgrams “are nt sufficiently in line with the university’s strategic aims.” Similarly, Melburne university recently shut dwn a famus, lng-running literary magazine.
This decline reflects a cncerning change in scial values. Universities are weakening the very subjects that cntribute t a develping culture. A cuntry is a natin, nt merely an ecnmy, and it cannt develp well withut encuraging human self-knwledge. While the success f technlgy is undeniable, a sciety ttally fcused n the present, effectively ignring the lessns f the past, will lack the necessary balance t cnfidently face the future.
32.What can be inferred abut the 2021 plicy?
A.It prved largely ineffective.B.It aimed at cst reductin.
C.It respected students’ talents.D.It prmted humanities research.
33.What can we learn abut the Australian Natinal University frm paragraph 3?
A.It cmpletes the language prject.B.It prtects cultural prgrams frm cuts.
C.It shuts dwn a literary magazine.D.It priritizes strategic gals ver culture.
34.What is the authr’s attitude twards the universities’ recent changes?
      A.Critical.B.Favrable.C.Objective.D.Uncncerned.
35.What can be a suitable title fr the text?
      A.Science: The Only Way AheadB.Humanities: A Victim f Efficiency
      C.Universities: Servants f EcnmyD.Culture: A Fading Natinal Identity
