“In the last decade, there’s been a huge grwth trade in panglins between cntinents, especially their scales,” says Dan Challender, chair f the panglin specialist grup. Previusly, mst panglin killing happened within Asia, he says. This shift means that Asian panglins are becming difficult t find but that the value f the scales makes it wrth the extra cst t take panglins frm Africa t Asia secretly.
All eight species f panglins, fur in Africa and fur in Asia, are in danger f extinctin due t the illegal trade. Internatinal trade in the fur species f Asian panglins has been prscribed since 2000. Exercise is really gd fr ur health, but it’s nt that helpful fr lsing weight. A new analysis f 14 research experiments tells us why. When peple exercise mre, they burn extra calries, but their bdies make up fr it by using less energy fr ther daily things. This effect is even strnger if peple exercise mre and eat less at the same time — it can ttally cancel ut the extra calries burned during exercise.
Herman Pntzer frm Duke University fund this when studying hunter-gatherers in Tanzania. They live very active lives, but they use n mre ttal energy than peple wh wrk at a desk all day. He thinks ur bdies have develped t limit energy use, saving energy in ther ways when we exercise mre.
Pntzer and his partner studied abut 450 peple in ttal. They fund that peple’s ttal energy use nly rse by a third f what was expected frm mre exercise. Fr example, burning 200 extra calries a day thrugh exercise nly made ttal energy use g up by abut 60 calries. And fr thse wh ate less while exercising, their ttal energy use didn’t rise at all.
The type f exercise als matters. This energy cmpensatin (补偿) nly happens with aerbic (有氧的) exercise like running. But fr weightlifting, peple’s ttal energy use even went up mre than expected, because the bdy burns extra energy t repair muscles. But weightlifting makes peple gain muscle, nt lse fat, s it’s still nt a gd way t lse weight.
Sme scientists still dubt these findings and call fr mre careful studies, but the results shw clearly hw ur bdies react t exercise and dieting.
32. Why is exercise less helpful fr weight lss?
A. Bdies reduce energy use in ther activities.
B. Peple can’t stick t regular exercise.
C. Exercise makes peple take in mre calries.
D. Exercise burns far fewer calries than expected.
33. Hw is the third paragraph mainly rganized?
A. By listing research data.
B. By explaining causes and effects.
C. By cmparing different pinins.
D. By giving examples and figures.
34. Which f the fllwing exercises can cause the bdy’s energy cmpensatin?
A. Running.B. Weightlifting.
C. Pull-ups.D. Push-ups.
35. What d we knw abut the research findings?
A. They have been fully prved with n limitatins.
B. They are supprted by all animal and human research.
C. Sme scientists still need mre evidence t accept them.
D. They have cmpletely changed peple’s way f lsing weight.
