In a Guatemalan village, it was when Spears and her husband rented a small huse that they realized the living cnditins were mre primitive than back hme, but the simple life was appealing. Despite their cheerfulness, the lcal peple struggled with harsh realities: nt
enugh fd t eat, pr educatinal pprtunities, and n reliable way t build a self-sufficient life.
Spears wndered what she culd d that wuld make a lasting change.“We didn't want t give them a few things and leave,” she said.“We wanted t help, and they were able t manage it n their wn.” S they started teaching, fcusing n incme pprtunity. The cuple taught skills like hw t use a sewing machine, hw t create a mre prductive garden, and hw t charge fr services and manage resurces.
Their first few years centered n cmpleting prjects, althugh traveling fur times a year made it difficult t keep the effrt ging. In time, the lcals tk t it. The vertical gardening techniques tk rt, which made mre vegetables available. A few sewing machines arrived, and skilled seamstresses emerged. Then Spears realized she needed help.
She reached ut t friends, and the jint effrt was rganized int a nnprfit: BeHumanitarian. With the frmalizatin f the nnprfit, the impact utgrew even their wn expectatins, mre spnsrs and vlunteers jining the initiative. A cmmunity grew up arund the village in Guatemala, with peple cming fur times a year t supprt, lve and discver what really matters.

“We all knw that when there's an earthquake r a tsunami, the first thing that ges dwn is the pwer line. When it's at night, we' re nt ging t wait until the next mrning t rescue survivrs;” said Nitin Sanket, assistant prfessr f rbtics engineering at WrcesterPlytechnic Institute.“S we started lking at nature. Is there a creature in the wrld which can actually d this?”
Sanket and his students fund their answer in bats and the winged mammal's remarkable ability t echlcate, r find their way via reflected sund. They' re develping air rbts that can be flwn where and when current drnes can t perate.
Sanket's drne fits in the palm f his hand, and is made mstly frm mexpensive hbby-grade materials and can perate in the dark. A small ultrasnic(超声的) sensr, nt unlike thse used in autmatic faucets(龙头) in public restrms, cpies bat behavir, sending ut a pulse (脉冲) f high-frequency sund and using the ech t detect bstacles in its path.
During a recent demnstratin, a student used a remte cntrl t launch the drne in a brightly lit rm and then again after turning ff all but a faintly glwing red light. As it apprached a transparent glass wall, the drne repeatedly stpped and backed away, even with the lights ff and with fg and fake snw flating in the air.
Yet, the research didn't always get alng well. The researchers realized that the nise f the bat rbt disturbed the ultrasund, requiring 3D-printed shells t minimize the disturbance. They als used AI t teach the drne hw t filter (过滤) and interpret sund signals.
Still, there's a lng way t g t match bats, which can cntract their ear muscles t listen nly t certain eches and can detect smething as small as a human hair frm several meters away. Sanket said,“We are nwhere clse t what nature has achieved, but smeday we will be there and these will be useful fr applicatin in the wild.”
28. Why did Sanket's team study bats?
A. Fr their physical strength.B. Fr their high flight speed.
C. Fr their easy accessibility.D. Fr their navigatin skills.
29. What can we learn abut the drne frm the demnstratin?
A. It culd even break thrugh glass walls.
B. It perfrmed well regardless f visibility.
C. It required adjustment t avid bstacles,
D. It needed human help t detect bstacles,
30. What challenge did the researchers encunter during the research?
A. The materials were hardly accessible,
B. The sensr generated t much nise.
C. The AI system failed t prcess the sund signals.
D. The drne's peratinal nise affected its sensr.
31. What des Sanket think f their present achievement?
A. It needs further develpment.B. It's unrealistic fr practical use.
C. It is ready fr widespread use.D. It has already utperfrmed bats.
D
New research suggests that attentin des nt remain steady. Instead, it fluctuates (波动) in a rapid cycle, shifting fcus abut seven t ten times per secnd. This cnstant sampling f the envirnment may have helped humans survive. Fr ur ancestrs wh had t cntinue t mnitr the envirnment fr attackers while searching fr fd, this was beneficial.
Ian Fiebelkrn, assistant prfessr f Neurscience at the Del Mnte Institute frNeurscience at the University f Rchester, said,“In tday's wrld, with laptps pen in frnt f us and a smartphne nearby, rhythmically ccurring windws fr beneficial attentinal shifts might als wrk against us. That is, rhythmically ccurring windws fr attentinal shifts are als assciated with increased susceptibility t distracting infrmatin.”
T investigate the subtle shifts in attentin, Zach Redding, the first authr f the study, recrded brain activity using an electrencephalgram (EEG). In the experiment, 40participants fcused n a dim gray square psitined at the center f a cmputer screen. At the same time, clred dts appeared as distractins.
The EEG data revealed repeating patterns in brain activity that predicted when attentin was mre likely t mve tward a distractr. These cycles ccurred rughly seven t ten times per secnd. They als lined up with alternating (交替的) perids in which participants were better r wrse at nticing the central target. When nticing perfrmance drpped, participants were mre easily distracted.
The findings may help researchers better understand attentin-related cnditins such asADHD(注意缺陷障碍). Althugh the study did nt directly examine peple with ADHD, it ffers clues abut hw differences in these brain rhythms culd influence fcus and distractibility.
“Our research shws that the typical brain rhythmically alternates between states that
prmte either increased prcessing at the present fcus f attentin r an increased likelihd f shifting attentinal resurces elsewhere,” said Fiebelkrn.“It culd be that the brains f peple with ADHD d nt alternate between these states as ften, resulting in a lss f cgnitive flexibility.”
32. Hw did attentin fluctuatins benefit ancient humans?
A. They helped them discver fd easily.
B. They enabled them t watch fr dangers.
C. They made them fcus n things better.
D. They adapted them t the envirnment.
33. What des the underlined wrd“susceptibility” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Defenselessness.B. Resistance.C. Dedicatin.D. Adaptatin.
34. What did the EEG results shw?
A. Participants ignred the central target.
B. Distracting dts had n influence at all.
C. Brain waves remained unchanged steadily.
D. Distractin fllwed brain rhythm changes.
35. What is Fiebelkrn's explanatin abut peple with ADHD?
A. They have strnger cgnitive flexibility.
B. They fcus better than rdinary peple.
C. Their brain states switch less regularly.
D. Their brain rhythms wrk much faster.
