I was sixteen years ld, and like many ther teenage bys, I was in a band. S when we fund ut we’d been invited t play at a charitable event in a nursing hme, we were very excited — it felt like ur first real stage.
On the day f the cncert, we turned up early. As we headed backstage, still buzzing with excitement, the directr f the nursing hme came ver t talk t us. “Sme in the audience are suffering frm physical r mental illnesses. These peple have very few chances t see live entertainment f any kind. Just play yur regular shw, and yu’ll d fine.”
Sn it was time fr the shw. The auditrium was packed. But the silence that filled the rm felt heavy, almst unnerving. Then we started playing ur first few sngs. We played prbably the best shw we had ever put n. As each sng finished, there was a shrt pause. This was the time when the audience wuld nrmally applaud. Unfrtunately, we were getting little applause.
A sinking feeling settled in my chest. We unplugged ur instruments and went backstage. Seeing this, the directr ran backstage and asked us what was wrng.
“Well, it seemed that the audience didn’t like the perfrmances,” I replied, trying t hide my disappintment.
“They like all f yu. But maybe the sngs are nt quite the style they like.” On hearing this, we realized the prblem. A spark f hpe flickered. S I advised the directr t give us a 10-minute break. We then had a heated discussin abut what t play.
Returning t the stage, we played seven sngs fr the elderly residents. Mst f the music was gentle, and sme f the sngs were familiar t them. This time, the atmsphere shifted — sme f them even std up and danced t the music. With every cheer, the knt in my stmach lsened a little mre. Finally, we finished ur perfrmance.
What happened next shcked me mre than anything. I went back t pack up, nt knwing what t expect, nly t find that at least ten peple had gathered arund the stage. Several peple tld us we were the best band t play fr them in years. I std there speechless, smething warm and unexpected swelling in my chest.
After that shw, I made up my mind t have a career in music. I did play a few mre shws with different bands ver the years, and sme crwds rared luder than that night. But n matter hw much the audience cheered, I never felt as gd as I did n that particular night — I learned that music is nt abut applause, but abut truly tuching smene.

Frm a blackbird’s sng t the rumble f a passing train, sunds are prduced by vibratins (振动) mving thrugh the air, grund, r water in invisible waves. When thse sundwaves enter yur ear, they make tiny membranes, bnes, and hair cells inside vibrate, which triggers electrical signals that yur brain interprets as sund.
But when that sund is extremely lud r frequent,it can actually harm the human bdy. “Yu can be expsed t s much sund that it destrys yur hearing,” says Erica Walker, an epidemilgist at Brwn University. As vlume increases, the length f time during which yu’re expsed t it shuld decrease.
It’s ne thing t leave a cncert with ringing ears r t be surprised by a sudden lud nise, but hw des that actually affect yur health? “When that stress respnse is stimulated, yu start t breathe faster. Yur heart rate starts t increase,” says Walker.
If this happens nce r twice it might nt be that big f a deal, but ver time, cnstant stimulatin f yur bdy’s stress respnse, r lng-term nise expsure, can make yu mre likely t develp serius health prblems. Accrding t ne estimate, lng-term nise expsure leads t 48,000 new cases f heart disease in Eurpe each year and affects the quantity and quality f sleep fr 6.5millin peple. Nise can raise yur bld pressure and heart rate even while yu sleep.
But there can als be a psychlgical aspect, especially if peple feel like they have n cntrl ver the nise they are expsed t. This can lead t mental health harms, such as increased anxiety and depressin, says Walker.
When it cmes t sleep, nises dn’t have t be nearly as lud t cause prblems. Accrding t Jacksn, sunds as lw as 30 t 40dB can cause a persn t tss and turn r wake up. Hwever, sunds in this range are nly assciated with mdest health effects. It’s really when yu see night nises in the range f 40 t 55 dB r mre that negative health effects are bserved.
T keep nises frm ruining yur sleep studies suggest playing white nise thrugh the night can help mask ther sunds. Experts als suggest mdifying yur bedrm t safeguard against nighttime nise. “Add sft surfaces that help blck r lessen nise, such as wall decratins, acustic tiles, r a thicker bedrm dr,” says Jacksn.
Hwever, the best way t fight back against nise pllutin is t fcus n the surce. We need t think abut hw t change that ging frward.
28. What can be inferred abut nise expsure frm the passage?
A. It is a majr cause f heart disease in Eurpe.
B. The bdy’s stress respnse fades with repeated nise.
C. A sudden lud nise des mre harm than a cnstant ne.
D. Its risk depends n the ludness and hw lng the nise lasts.
29. What can we leam frm this passage?
A. Even lw-level sunds may lead t health prblems.
B. Nise pllutin mainly causes psychlgical disrders.
C. Pr sleep quality can result in mre severe hearing lss.
D. High bld pressure is the mst cmmn nise-related cnditin.
30. What is the main purpse f this passage?
A. T analyze hw nise affects sleep quality.
B. T suggest practical ways t reduce nise pllutin in daily life.
C. T explain hw sund is prduced and hw the human ear hears it.
D. T illustrate the health cnsequences f nise and the respnses t it.

Over the last decade, millins f peple arund the wrld have becme aware f the camera trap. The candid images and vides that camera traps prduce have been featured in cuntless dcumentaries, are widely shared n scial media, and have been the fcus f hugely ppular citizen science prjects. Less well knwn is the fact that the camera trap has a lng histry that extends back mre than 100 years. Over this time, they have gne frm being an experimental technlgy, used by just a handful f peple, t a cmmercialized technlgy being used by many thusands f phtgraphers, hbbyists, hunters and bilgists.
The mdern camera trap is simply a digital camera cnnected t an infrared sensr which can “see” warm bjects that are mving, like animals. When an animal mves past the sensr, it causes the camera t fire, recrding an image r vide t the memry card fr later access. Camera traps can be left in the field t cntinuusly watch an area f habitat fr weeks r even mnths, recrding the rarest events which ccur in nature.
This can include everything frm a big cat patrlling its territry t the raiding f a bird’s nest by a hunter that targets baby birds. Camera traps are “wildlife friendly”, in that they cause little r n disturbance t wildlife. At the same time, they prduce permanent and prvable recrds f animals.
Camera traps prvide data n species lcatin, ppulatin sizes and hw species are interacting. They als help us t understand hw humans interact with ther frms f wildlife.
The develpment f netwrked camera traps, capable f sending images ver phne r satellite netwrks in near real-time, has prvided a new tl t prtect wildlife frm illegal hunting. New sftware tls and statistical mdels are als making it much easier and faster t btain high-quality infrmatin frm the thusands f images that camera traps can quickly generate. This is imprving ur understanding f human impacts n wildlife, and helping land managers make better decisins at bth small and large scales.
Despite the great ptential f camera traps, there are a number f significant challenges invlved in wrking with them. Small animals are less likely t trigger the cameras, and it can be difficult t identify similar-lking species r specific individuals frm a pht r vide. One f the main challenges is prcessing the millins f images generated by cameras.
“Peple are facing majr bttlenecks when it cmes t turning images r vides int structured data,” says Zachary, a wildlife eclgist. The key t addressing this challenge lies in building pen and cllabrative platfrms, and effrts are already underway. Then, the ptential ges far beynd that. With such platfrms, cnservatin effrts will fllw.
31. What d yu knw abut camera traps frm the passage?
A. They are used primarily by prfessinal bilgists.
B. They cause mre disturbance than traditinal methds.
C. They have gained much public attentin in recent years.
D. They were riginally designed fr wildlife dcumentaries.
32. What dcs the wrd “raiding” underlined in Paragraph 3 prbably mean?
A. Attacking secretly.B. Guarding quietly.
C. Repairing carefully.D. Remving cmpletely.
33. Accrding t the text, netwrked camera traps can _________.
A. help frm statistical mdels mre easily and quickly
B. get mre cmplex infrmatin frm the evlving images
C. prcess camera data smthly thrugh satellite netwrks
D. help fight against illegal hunting with near real-time images
34. As fr vercming the challenge f prcessing images, the authr is _________.
A. ptimisticB. critical
C. cautiusD. wrried
