I have lng realized that peple wh have grwn up n a farm have a leg up n s many future jb prspects. Expsed t the very true saying that necessity is the mther f inventin, farm kids witnessed parents wh culd perfrm a master class n figuring ut a slutin t any number f breakdwns n the fly.
We all knew the names f hand tls befre we started first grade. Much f this educatin transferred withut a wrd uttered, and n praise r reward was expected. Peple wh visited my parents were always astnished that we kids gt ur barn bts and headed ut the dr fr milking time withut a wrd said. There was n cmplaining. We knew that the sner we gt started, the sner we wuld be dne.
What we didn’t realize is that we were learning life skills and mastering simple strategies t deal with challenges that inevitably landed in ur path. We culd draw n dzens f previus experiences we had helped ur parents thrugh.
Nt t lng ag, I heard a friend f mine saying that hiring a yung persn wh was raised n a farm is a dream find and getting harder t cme by as ur landscape changes. This fact is wrrisme in nearly every career lane. If a yung nursing student has assisted with animals, there is sympathy and attentin t detail already in the makeup f that student. Judgment has been develped, helping t determine a minr issue versus a majr ne. A yung truck driver wh grew up wrking n tractrs (拖拉机) already has an eye fr safety. If a tire is lw, it will be checked and addressed befre taking t the pen rad.
A yung persn starting just abut any jb starts at a disadvantage if they’ve dne nthing but play thrughut their life. Mst f my classmates, even if their wn parents were nt farmers, had the pprtunity t be hired by a farmer, even if just fr summer wrk. Hwever, that fact has changed greatly ver the years, even in my rural cmmunity. I truly miss thse simple, glden days.

On a warm night last August, a 12-year-ld by named Shawn Dunkley tk a friend’s electric scter (滑板车) ut fr a spin. Dunkley was zming (飞驰) alng the paths f the neighburhd. He glanced at the scter’s speed display: 69 km/h. Suddenly, everything stpped. Tw passers-by fund him lying unrespnsive a few metres frm the pathway. A dead squirrel lay nearby. The best anyne can figure is that it dashed in frnt f the scter. The passers-by called 911 and Dunkley was rushed t the hspital.
Dunkley’s injury was n anmaly. At Trnt’s St. Michael’s Hspital, e-scter-related admissins jumped 600 percent frm 2020 t 2024. At the Mntreal Children’s Hspital Trauma Centre, the number f cases multiplied tenfld in nly a year, between 2023 and 2024.
E-scters have zmed nt Canadian streets faster than the law can keep up. Tday, a mixture f cnflicting regulatins gverns their use and these devices have destryed lng-established rules and the rder f the rad. Pedestrians (行人) see unpredictable invaders (闯入者) zming alng sidewalks. Cyclists see invaders in their hard-wn lanes. Drivers see chas. And dctrs see brken wrists and bnes.
Everyne, it seems, hates them — except thse wh lve them. Fr many, e-scters have becme the fastest, easiest way t cut thrugh ur increasingly crwded cities. On paper, they prvide the kind f transprtatin fix that city gvernments say they want: cheap, quiet and clean. In sme cities, e-scters have becme the vehicles f chice fr teens t zm thrugh dwntwn — they’re cheaper than taxis and rideshares, quicker than walking and a lt mre fun than taking the bus. And fr delivery wrkers, pwerful e-scters r e-bikes are a necessity.
Public streets have always been cntested, as drivers and cyclists and pedestrians cmpete fr their share f the limited rad space. But until e-machines arrived, we culd usually take a few basics fr granted. Speed limits were nn-negtiable. Sidewalks were fr peple, bike lanes fr bikes and rads fr mtr vehicles. Everything had its place. The micrmbility revlutin, as its supprters call it, has destabilized all that, and tensins have increased.

When tw f James Jhnsn-Byrne’s friends gt int an argument earlier this year, he didn’t knw what t d. S the 16-year-ld turned t an AI cmpanin fr advice. AI cmpanins are digital characters wh text and talk with users. The chatbt tld Jhnsn-Byrne t separate his friends. He did s and it slved the immediate prblem, he said. But “nw they dn’t talk much.” The experience shwed him that AI cmpanins culdn’t find the deeper issue.
New research suggests ther teens are having the same experience. The majrity f teenagers (72%) have used AI cmpanins, accrding t the survey f ver 1,000 13-17-year-lds cnducted this year by Cmmn Sense Media. Over half f teens use them regularly and ne-third turn t them fr relatinships and scial interactins. What’s mre, 33% have discussed serius and imprtant issues with AI cmpanins instead f ther humans.
The results are cause fr cncern because the teen years are a “sensitive time f scial develpment,” said Michael Rbb, lead authr f the study. AI cmpanins can’t mdel healthy human relatinships. “In the real wrld there are all kinds f scial cues that kids have t bth interpret and get used t and learn hw t respnd t,” Rbb pinted ut. But kids can’t learn t pick up n things like bdy language frm a chatbt.
Chatbts are als sycphantic (谄媚的). “They want t please yu, and they wn’t put up a lt f frictin in the way that peple in the real wrld might.” If users get used t this, “when yu encunter frictin in real wrld interactins, yu’re ging t be less prepared,” Rbb said.
Thankfully, there are things parents can d t prtect their kids. Rbb suggested they shuld start by talking t their teens abut AI cmpanins withut judgment and listening patiently t learn what was appealing abut these tls befre jumping int cncerns; then, it’s a gd idea t pint ut that “AI cmpanins are prgrammed t be agreeable” and discuss why that’s a cncern. Having cnversatins like this can help kids learn t think abut AI mre bradly in healthy ways.
32. What d we knw abut the chatbt’s advice t Jhnsn-Byrne?
A. It was favrably received.B. It settled the argument perfectly.
C. It slved the cnflict temprarily.D. It was based n a thrugh analysis.
33. What des the survey by Cmmn Sense Media shw abut teenagers?
A. They are faced with serius issues.
B. They lack adequate scial interactins.
C. They lack effective cmmunicatin skills.
D. They are heavily dependent n AI cmpanins.
34. What des the authr want t shw by mentining “bdy language” in paragraph 3?
A. The limitatin f AI cmpanins.
B. The functin f AI cmpanins.
C. The ptential applicatin f AI cmpanins.
D. The future develpment f AI cmpanins.
35. What des Rbb suggest parents d?
A. Talk their children ut f using AI tls.
B. Supprt their children’s chice f AI tls.
C. Help their kids find mre suitable AI tls.
D. Guide their kids t think critically abut AI tls.

Fr years, I had been using delicate experimental tls and advanced lab materials t bring cmplex scientific cncepts t life fr my students. Nthing made me happier than seeing their eyes light up during these interactive and engaging activities. S I had never imagined that waste items wuld becme ur mst valuable teaching resurces, and that shrtage wuld becme the surce f ur greatest inspiratin.
Last year, ur schl was hit by severe budget cuts, which meant many resurces fr science activities were n lnger available. As a teacher wh had always relied n vivid experiments t make science fun, I felt extremely frustrated and discuraged. Hw culd I keep my students interested and engaged withut the well-equipped lab and expensive materials that had served us s well befre? I was at a lss, wrrying that my science classes wuld becme bring and ineffective, and that my students wuld lse their passin fr explring the wrld thrugh experiments.
Just as I was struggling with this prblem, my students surprised me in the mst unexpected way. When we started ur unit n simple machines, smething amazing happened. Jamie, a ten-year-ld by full f curisity, brught in sme ld bicycle parts frm his garage. He said they culd be used t make wheels and levers (控制杆). Fllwing his example, Maya shared cardbard bxes that her family had kept fr later use. One by ne, ther students als brught in recycled items: plastic bttles, string, used cans, and even small pieces f wd. By the end f the week, we had transfrmed the crner f ur classrm int an entire “inventin lab” using recycled materials and student cntributins.
