A few years ag, a chance encunter with traditinal Chinese medicine (TCM) excited my deep interest in this ancient culture. Greatly fascinated, I decided t pursue a systematic study.
I applied t Yunnan University f Chinese Medicine, and I was verjyed the day I received my admissin letter. At the beginning, the ancient Chinese classics and cmplex prcesses f herb cllectin, identificatin and cmbinatin were quite challenging t me. Frtunately, I had the patient guidance f prfessrs and the enthusiastic help f classmates t rely n.
I remember when I first started learning acupuncture (针灸), I was ften t hesitant t actually use the needles. T encurage me, my senir classmates generusly acted as patients, braving the discmfrt t let me practice acupuncture techniques n their bdies. With their supprt and mtivatin, my acupuncture skills steadily imprved, and my studies quickly gt n track.
During my learning jurney, the mst memrable experience was my internship (实习) at the Yunnan Prvincial Hspital f Traditinal Chinese Medicine. There, I had the pprtunity t participate directly in patient care. I lked frward t every Saturday afternn when I culd shadw my teacher. After each patient cnsultatin, she wuld give me a detailed explanatin: what the patient’s pulse (脉搏) indicated, what it represented in terms f their cnditins, and the rle f each herb in the prescriptin (处方). This apprach helped shape my diagnstic thinking and was incredibly beneficial t me. Even thugh this meant she culd never leave wrk n time, she never cmplained. As an ancient Chinese saying ges, “It’s easier t get a teacher f classics than a teacher f character.”
My every day in China has been filled with challenges and surprises. TCM has taught me nt just the skills t heal and save lives but hw t view life. I have cme t understand that the pwer f culture lies mre in its ability t cnnect hearts than in its uniqueness. Peple frm different cultural backgrunds can actually frm strng cnnectins.

Yu’ve seen it happen: yu present a fact — clear, undeniable — and instead f recnsidering their psitin, the ther persn dubles dwn. “I just dn’t believe it,” they say. This cnfusing resistance isn’t just frustrating; it’s deeply human. Our brains are wired nt merely t seek truth, but t defend identity. Welcme t the mind’s firewall — ur internal system that prtects beliefs frm intruding (侵入的) evidence. And yet, understanding this firewall is the first step t disarming it, fr urselves and thers.
In Elizabeth Klbert’s article “Why Facts Dn’t Change Our Minds,” she draws n studies in cgnitive science t shw that reasning evlved nt t find truth, but t win arguments. Our brains ften favr “mtivated reasning” — seeking infrmatin that supprts ur views and discunting evidence that challenges them. This tendency, knwn as “cnfirmatin bias (偏见)”, helps us maintain a cnsistent sense f self and stay in line with ur scial grups. This makes cnversatins less abut learning and mre abut defending ne’s territry.
Think f yur mind like a cmputer. Facts are like data packets trying t get thrugh yur firewall. But unless they meet certain criteria — emtinal relevance, scial safety, identity cmpatibility (兼容) — they’re blcked. The mind desn’t simply take in raw infrmatin; it tries t make sense f it. Facts alne aren’t enugh t truly cnnect r stick. This is especially true in emtinally charged fields like plitics, health, r identity. When we feel threatened, the emtinal brain verrides the ratinal (理智的) brain. What feels true utweighs what is true.
If facts can’t get past the firewall, what can? As discussed in my bk The Art f Change, it’s nt abut tearing dwn the firewall, but abut finding alternative paths arund it — narrative, emtin, and relatinship.
Next time yu’re trying t change smene’s mind — r yur wn — remember: lead with cnnectin, nt argument. Start with shared experiences r values. Use stries, nt just analytics. And stay pen yurself. Try this: Think f a belief yu hld strngly. Then write dwn three reasns smene might see it differently — nt arguments, but genuinely thughtful reasns. Ding this wn’t make yu weaker in yur beliefs. It’ll make yu wiser in yur understanding.
8. What des the authr think f the mind’s firewall?
A. It is natural.B. It is cnfusing.
C. It is beneficial.D. It is necessary.
9. Why d ur brains favr “mtivated reasning”?
A. It helps peple seek truth.
B. It allws peple t defend identity.
C. It makes peple learn mre abut themselves.
D. It enables peple t vercme any challenges.
10. What is paragraph 3 mainly abut?
A. The scientific methd fr prcessing facts.
B. The underlying lgic f the mind’s firewall.
C. The bilgical structure f the human brain.
D. The cnflict between emtinal and ratinal brains.
11. What des the authr suggest readers d t change thers’ minds?
A. Argue against their beliefs.
B. Present a thrugh analysis t them.
C. Frm an emtinal bnd with them.
D. Train them t be mre pen-minded.
D
Amir Gldberg discvered a funny thing abut American culture n his way t researching the cmplex tpic. Gldberg and his clleagues at Stanfrd and Yale universities analyzed millins f Yelp and Netflix reviews t reveal that peple cnsidered the mst culturally adventurus are actually the mst resistant t experiences perceived as “crssing the line.”
That is, thse described as “cultural mnivres (杂食动物)” — because they eat Thai fr lunch, play bcce ball after wrk, and stream a French film that night — are the very nes ppsed t mixing it up. N hummus n their ht dgs, frget abut spaghetti Westerns, and d nt mentin Switched-On Bach. Thse fferings are nt cnsidered culturally authentic. They are a hdgepdge (混杂物) t which these flks wuld likely wrinkle their cllective nses.
“We find these peple hate the mst atypical fferings,” says Gldberg. “They can pretend t be the mst pen, but it turns ut they are nt. By being multicultural, they are the mst cnservative and the mst resistant t changes.”
The findings are ppsite t previus research, which viewed mnivrusness as synnymus with penness. Instead, Gldberg, alng with Michael T. Hannan, prfessr emeritus f rganizatinal behavir at Stanfrd GSB and Balazs Kvacs f Yale University, write in their paper that “a taste fr variety decreases ne’s receptivity t cultural innvatin.”
But as the team’s research pints ut, there is a subset f cnsumers wh are pen t change. “Fr cultural nvelty t have an impact and ccasinally drive change, sme agents must be tlerant t breaking traditinal bundaries,” he says.
The trick is t find and develp them, as Steve Jbs did with the iPhne. Gldberg ntes that when the iPhne was first intrduced, it cnfused the public. What is it? A phne? A cmputer? Many saw the prduct and dismissed it, deciding phnes are fr persnal cmmunicatin and cmputers are fr the ffice. The prfessr ntes that it was Jbs and his lyal fllwers wh changed minds, changed habits, and ultimately changed the glbal culture.
12. What d we knw abut “cultural mnivres”?
A. They are unwilling t change.
B. They are adventurus custmers.
C. They priritize American culture.
D. They hate culturally authentic fferings.
13. What des the underlined phrase “synnymus with” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Heavily dependent n.
B. Greatly superir t.
C. Clsely cnnected with.
D. Cmpletely cntrary t.
14. What des Gldberg think f the iPhne?
A. Cnfusing.B. Pineering.
C. Cnvenient.D. Effective.
15. What is the key t vercming cultural resistance accrding t the text?
A. Educating the public.
B. Setting traditinal bundaries.
C. Develping innvative prducts.
D. Making use f the pen-minded.
