Fr ver 30 years, Rainbw Mntessri in Addisn has given children a place t grw and explre the wrld arund them, and they’re still ging strng tday. With 20 years in the same lcatin, the schl is “nt ging anywhere,” says Dave Rdenbrn, a sn f the schl’s funders. As general directr, Dave has verseen many imprvements, including a new playgrund fr the preschl and a cmplete mdernizatin.
The schl serves families f children frm 6 weeks t 6th grade. This allws them t have prgrams in baby care, preschl, kindergarten, and elementary. The curriculum has develped ver the decades, mst ntably in the elementary. At first smewhat jkingly referred t as “Mnte-srta,” due t its relaxed applicatin f the Mntessri Methd, the schl’s elementary nw stresses a mre traditinal Mntess envirnment. Mntessri assciates abstract cncepts with cncrete sensrial (感觉的) experiences, ensuring that children are invlved in learning, nt just memrizatin. Classrms still have a creative, casual feel, with children having freedm f chice, but in keeping with Mntessri principles, they wrk within a framewrk. This helps them learn abut freedm within limits, maximizing their ptential.
The truly internatinal Rainbw Mntessri staff cmes frm a wide range f backgrunds, all Mntessri-trained. “They are an energetic, devted grup,” says Dave. “They are lyal, caring and like what they d a lt. I’d say a gd 30 t 40 percent f them have been here fr almst a decade r mre.”
Dave says that his favrite part f being at Rainbw Mntessri is “making things grw”. By that, he desn’t mean it in the sense f the rganic, but by “cming up with gd slutins t prblems as they ccur.” This is reflective f Mntessri beliefs, in which each child learns t use the right tls and discver slutins fr themselves. Dave credits a strng staff and great parents with lts f patience fr helping t make Rainbw Mntessri an ideal place fr children t learn and grw.

As the wrld’s greatest skatebarder, he talked abut hw his life was nt always s miraculus (奇迹般的). He mentined ne day he was skating n tp f the wrld, and the next day the sprt f skatebarding fell right n its face. Life fr Tny has had its ups and dwns, and what brught him back up was the way he believed in himself. One f the mst tragic events in Tny’s life was that his father passed away. One part f Tny that cmpletely impressed me is the way he accepts himself. His gal is never t d better than thers, but t d his best. If he des the best he can, it desn’t matter hw anyne else takes him. That’s true and wise. As fr me, I play baseball and things aren’t ging s well, but I’m trying my hardest, that’s life. It’s hw yu apprach thse bad days that will keep yu n tp.
Cnfidence brught Tny t the next level. During ur meeting he cntinually talked abut the imprtance f fllwing ne’s dream. He als said, alng with that, ne needs t have a strng faith in ne’s wn ability t achieve that dream, n matter what challenges are presented.

Researchers cntinue t shw the pwer behind ur sense f smell. Recent studies have fund, amng ther things, that the smell f fds like pizza can cause uncntrllable anger in drivers n rads.
The review explains that smell is unique in its effects n the brain. Accrding t Cnrad King, the researcher wh carried ut the review, "mre than any ther senses, the sense f smell ges thrugh the lgical part f the brain and acts n the systems cncerned with feelings. This is why the smell f baking bread can destry the best intentins f a dieter."
Smell, which dictates the unbelievable cmplexity f fd tastes, has always been the least understd f ur senses. Our nses are able t detect up t 10,000 distinct smells. Our ability t smell and taste this extremely large range f smells is cntrlled by smething like 1,000 genes(基因), which make up an amazing 3% f the human genme. Researchers Richard Axel and Linda Buck were tgether awarded a Nbel Prize in 2004 fr their grund-breaking research n the nature f this extrardinary sense. These tw scientists were the first t describe the family f 1,000 lfactry(嗅觉) genes and t explain hw ur lfactry system wrks.
Accrding t ne study in the research review, smelling fresh pizza r even the packaging f fast fds can be enugh t make drivers feel impatient with ther rad users. They are then mre likely t speed and experience uncntrllable anger n rads. The mst reasnable explanatin is that these can all make drivers feel hungry, and therefre desperate t satisfy their appetites.
In cntrast, the smells f peppermint and cinnamn were shwn t imprve cncentratin levels as well as reduce drivers' impatience. Similarly, the smells f lemn and cffee appeared t prmte clear thinking and mental fcus.
Hwever, the way genes regulate smell differs frm persn t persn. A study by researchers in Israel has identified at least 50 lfactry genes which are switched n in sme peple and nt in thers. They believe this may explain why sme f us lve sme smells and tastes while thers hate them. The Israel researchers say their study shws that nearly every human being shws a different pattern f active and inactive smell-detecting receptrs.
9.What did Richard Axel and Linda Buck find ut?
A. The categry f fd smells.
B. The lgical part f human brain.
C. The nature f human lfactry system.
D. The relatinship between fd and feelings.
10.Which f the fllwing can help peple cncentrate?
A. Bread.B. Fruits.C. Cffee.D. Fast fd.
11.What d we knw frm the last paragraph?
A. Sme peple can recgnize up t 50 smells.
B. Every persn has a different pattern f genes.
C. Different peple are sensitive t different smells.
D. There are still sme lfactry genes t be fund ut.
12.What is the passage mainly abut?
A. Lgic and behaviur.B. Smell and its influence.
C. Sense ability and fd tastes.D. Olfactry genes and its system.
D
Camaraderie ver Cmpetence The imprtance f liking peple is the subject f an article in the Harvard Business Review, which has carried ut an experiment t find ut wh. We'd rather wrk with. Hardly surprisingly, the peple we want mst as ur wrkmates are bth: brilliant at their jbs and delightful human beings. And the peple we want least are bth unpleasant and useless. Mre interestingly, the authrs fund that, given the chice between wrking with lvable fls and cmpetent jerks (性情古怪的人), we irresistibly chse the frmer. Anyway, wh likes thse stupid men wh anny r hurt ther peple? We might insist that cmpetence matters mre, but ur behavir shws we stay clse t the peple we like and sharing infrmatin with them;
What cmpanies shuld therefre d is get peple t like each ther mre. The trick here is apparently t make sure staffs cme acrss each ther as ften as pssible during the day. They als shuld be sent n bnding curses and s n t encurage friendliness and break dwn displeasure. Hwever, mre utdr-activity weekends and shared cffee machines inspire n cnfidence at all.
The reality is that peple either like each ther r they dn't. Yu can't frce it. Pssibly yu can make ffices friendlier, by tlerating a lt f chat, but there is a prductivity cst t that. In my experience, the questin f lvable fl against cmpetent jerk may nt be the right ne. The tw are interrelated: we tend nt t like ur wrkmates when they are cmpletely hpeless. I was nce quite friendly with a wman whm I later wrked with. I fund her t be s utstandingly bad at her jb that I lst respect fr her and ended up nt really liking her at all. Then is there anything that cmpanies shuld be ding abut it?
By far the mst effective strategy wuld be t hire peple wh are all pretty much the same, given that similarity is ne f the main determinants f whether we like each ther. I think this is a pretty gd idea, but n ne dares recmmend this anymre withut ffending the diversity lbby grup. There is nly ne acceptable view n this subject: teams f similar peple are bad because they stp creativity. This may be true, thugh I have never seen any cnclusive prf f it.
Nt nly d we like similar peple, we like peple wh like us. S if cmpanies want t prmte mre liking, they shuld encurage a culture where we are all nice t each ther. The truble is that this needs t be dne with sme skill.
13.Accrding t the research, which kind f clleagues wuld mst peple tend t chse?
A. Nice but unintelligent.B. Creative but unattractive.
C. Cmpetent but unfriendly.D. Humrus but unambitius.
14.The authr talks abut her experience t shw that ______.
A. peple respect utstanding leaders
B. peple tend t like ptimistic wrkmates
C. a wrkmate's wrking ability is imprtant
D. talkative wrkmates makes ffices friendlier
15.Sme peple think that similar peple wrking tgether may ______.
A. ffend each therB. create fewer new ideas
C. talk mre and wrk lessD. be likely t stick tgether
16.T encurage wrkmates t like each ther, cmpanies culd ______.
A. set mre cffee machines in the wrk place
B. rganize team-building activities utside the ffice
C. encurage a diversity f pinins in wrkplace
D. emply staff wh have a lt in cmmn
