My neighbr Mr. Taylr kept a large and white hrse named Jasper. He had never panicked, never bitten, never kicked. There was a steady calmness in him that naturally inspired trust.
The first time my daughter, Lila, saw Jasper, she stpped mid-step, pinted her tiny finger, and whispered, “Hrsey.” Mr. Taylr waved us ver. Jasper lwered his great head and Lila pressed her cheek against his nse and giggled (咯咯地笑). Frm that day frward, Lila wanted t see Jasper every chance she gt. Their bnd grew deeper. That’s why the knck n my dr ne evening surprised me s much. It was Mr. Taylr. His face carried a tightness I’d never seen befre.
“I think,” he began carefully, “that yu shuld take Lila t see a dctr. I knw this will sund strange, but Jasper’s been behaving differently arund her. He sniffs (嗅) at her cnstantly. Jasper is a therapy-trained hrse. He’s been trained t sense in peple’s health, emtins, smetimes even illnesses.” He paused. “I’ve seen him d this befre, with peple wh were later diagnsed (诊断) with serius cnditins.”
I stared at him. Part f me wanted t laugh it ff. Hrses didn’t diagnse illnesses — dctrs did. Maybe Mr. Taylr was verreacting. I thanked him and clsed the dr. Fr the next tw days, a persistent vice reminded me f Jasper’s strange behavir. Finally, I tk Lila t the dctr. The appintment began rutinely, but then came extra tests. When the dctr came back, his expressin tld everything befre he spke. “I’m srry,” he said gently. “The tests shw signs f cancer.”
The mnths that fllwed were the hardest f ur lives. And thrugh it all, there was Jasper. He seemed t knw just hw t behave. He’d lwer his great head s she culd strke him withut much effrt. He std guard while Lila rested in the straw. It was as if he carried sme f her burden fr her.

Fr decades, the term “Mnday Blues” has been shrthand fr the cllective gran (呻吟) that greets the start f each wrkweek. Mndays cme with higher rates f anxiety, stress and even suicide cmpared with ther days.
T explre the bilgical basis f this persistent Mnday effect, Chandla, a chair prfessr f medical scilgy at the University f Hng Kng, fcused n the stress hrmne crtisl (皮质醇). When we experience a stressr — whether it’s smething psychlgical, such as an appraching deadline, r physical, such as a biting cld mrning-ur brain triggers the release f crtisl which helps manage shrt-term stress. But chrnically high levels f crtisl and bdily systems, weakening immune functin and increasing the risk f depressin, diabetes and besity.
Previus research had shwn that crtisl levels can be higher n weekdays than weekends, but few studies had directly examined whether Mndays are uniquely stressful at a bilgical level. T investigate further, Chandla turned t the English Lngitudinal Study f Aging, which fllws ver 10,000 adults aged 50 and lder in England. He asked participants questins like, “Hw anxius did yu feel yesterday?”Peple als reprted which day f the week “yesterday” was. T assess lng-term bilgical tll (伤害), the study analyzed crtisl levels in hair samples t measure cumulative prductin ver tw t three mnths.
Of the 3,511 participants, 281 reprted feeling anxius n a Mnday and 1.080 n anther day. Crucially, the study als cnsidered whether they were wrking r retired. The results were striking. Older adults wh felt anxius n Mndays had 23 percent higher crtisl in hair samples cllected up t tw mnths later, cmpared with thse feeling anxius n ther days. In cntrast, anxiety reprted n ther days did nt predict higher crtisl. And the effect was nt limited t wrkers; retirees wh felt anxius n Mndays als shwed elevated crtisl. In ther wrds, the bilgical impact f Mnday anxiety persist seven after the wrkweek fades frm daily life.
One reasn peple shw elevated crtisl n Mndays is that they feel mre anxius that day. The data shw the effect f anxiety n crtisl is magnified n Mndays. Why might Mndays exert such a pwerful effect n the bdy? Mndays present higher uncertainty, a key driver f stress. Fr thse wh dn’t adapt t the weekly cycle, the repeated stress f Mndays may accumulate ver the curse f a lifetime, eventually leading t lng-term prblems in the bdy’s regulatin f the stress system. It is als pssible that sme get anxius n Mndays s rutinely it becmes an autmatic bdily respnse, ne that persists even when the riginal trigger is gne.
Interventins aimed at helping peple adapt t the start f the week might have lng-term health benefits. The brain’s stress respnse is plastic, meaning it can change. Practices that supprt emtin regulatin, including meditatin, mindfulness, regular physical activity, and gd sleep hygiene, may help recnditin the brain’s weekly cycle and attenuate stress-related health risks.
8.What can we learn frm Chandla’s study?
      A. Weekdays are mre stressful than weekends.
      B. Stress hrmnes disrupt ur immune functin.
      C. Cnsequences f “Mnday effect” can stretch int retirement.
      D. Older adults had 23% higher crtisl level than average n Mndays.

      B. Uncertainty drives Mnday Anxiety
      C. Crtisl Peaks n Mndays fr Anxius Individuals
      D. The Weekly Cycle Leaves a Bilgical Mark n the Bdy

I was at the Gathering fr Science in Bstn, n 22 April 2017, as were 70, 000 ther scientists. We were there t stand up fr facts and truth.
Where are the crwds f scientists nw? Since then, harms frm science denial have nly increased: glbal suffering has grwn wing t inactin n climate change, and sme epidemics have risen alng with vaccine skepticism.
I've been ut there talking t the science deniers, and I've asked my scientist friends t cme with me. "Thse peple just aren't wrth talking t," they'll say. "I wuldn't make a difference anyway." That's wrng. Thse peple can and d change their minds, althugh it requires smene t put in the time t vercme distrust.
T be sure, many experts have launched themselves against misinfrmatin, enduring abuse n scial media and even threats t their safety. But when scientists turn dwn my invitatins, it's nt because f fear. Mst ften, their excuses are grunded in the "backfire effect", a questinable 2010 finding that peple smetimes embrace miscnceptins mre strngly when faced with crrective infrmatin, implying that pushing back against falsehds is cunter-prductive. Even the researchers whse results were exaggerated t ppularize this idea d nt embrace it anymre, and argue that the true challenge is learning hw best t target crrective infrmatin.
In fact, evidence is grwing that rebuttals can be effective. Science deniers all draw n the same flawed reasning techniques: cherry-picking evidence, relying n fake experts, and engaging in illgical reasning. A landmark 2019 study shwed that critiquing the flawed techniques can cntain the spread f misinfrmatin.
S hw des "technique rebuttal" wrk in practice?
Arnaud Gagneur and his clleagues at the University f Sherbrke cnducted mre than 1,00,020-minute interviews in which they listened t new parents' cncerns abut vaccinatins and answered their questins. Thse parents' children were 9% mre likely t receive all the vaccines n the schedule than were thse f uninterviewed parents whse babies were delivered in the same maternity ward. One mther tld him: "It's the first time that I've had a discussin like this, and I feel respected, and I trust yu." It is self-evident in science cmmunicatin that yu cannt cnvince a science denier with facts alne; mst science deniers dn't have a lack f infrmatin, but a lack f trust.
S what shuld scientists d? Even nn-experts can use technique rebuttal. A gelgist can engage a neighbr wh is vaccine hesitant. A prtein bilgist can cach an aunt r uncle wh wants "mre evidence" that climate change is real. Instead f shifting t mre cmfrtable cnversatins, engage in respectful exchange. If yu spend mre time asking questins than ffering explanatins, peple will be mre likely t pay attentin t the explanatins that yu d ffer.
11.What can we learn frm the passage?
      A. The Gathering fr Science addressed nline abuse.
      B. The silence f scientists wrsens harm frm science denial.
      C. Ineffective vaccines speed up the spread f sme epidemics.
      D. The authr's friends find it valuable t talk with science deniers.
12.Accrding t the passage, the "backfire effect" ______.
      A. suggests cautin befre crrecting thers
      B. emphasizes the effectiveness f rebuttals
      C. results frm flawed reasning techniques
      D. enjys wide supprt in the academic field
13.The last tw paragraphs suggest that ______.
      A. the interviewed parents agreed t vaccinatin due t the sufficiency f the infrmatin
      B. gelgists and prtein bilgists need t make sure the cnversatins are cmfrtable
      C. scientists are encuraged t listen carefully and ask questins during interactin
      D. scientists shuld teach nn-experts hw t cnduct respectful exchanges
14.In writing this passage, the authr aims t ______.
      A. express cncerns fr misinfrmatin
      B. analyze the rt cause f science denial
      C. advcate emplying technique rebuttal
      D. present the prblems scientists encunter

If yu had t save the life f a persn r an animal, which wuld yu chse? Mst adults say they wuld pick the persn, but almst half f yung children wuld prefer t save the animal, accrding t a study in Pland.
“The finding really surprised us,” says Matti Wilks at the University f Edinburgh, UK. (15) Fr example, a survey f millins f peple in 233 cuntries, mst f them in their 20s and 30s, fund they largely agreed that self-driving cars shuld crash int dgs r cats instead f peple if they had t chse.
      (16) Using a ty railway and Leg figures, Wilks and her clleagues presented 170 children aged 6 t 9 in an urban part f Pland with scenaris based n a thught experiment called the trlley prblem. The children had t decide whether t direct a runaway rail car dwn ne f tw tracks s that it crashed int a Leg persn r a Leg animal — either a dg r chimpanzee. (17)
Abut 42 per cent f the children wanted t save the dg and make the rail car cllide with the persn, cmpared with just 17 per cent f adults. Abut 28 per cent f children als priritised the chimpanzee ver the persn, cmpared with 11 per cent f adults.
“Children learn frm their parents, teachers and thers that it’s really imprtant t care fr thers, but it may be easier fr them t learn this as a blanket rule that applies t bth humans and animals,” says Karri Neldner at the Max Planck Institute fr Evlutinary Anthrplgy in Germany. (18) “Hwever, as they get lder, they might pick up n cultural narratives that tell us it’s really imprtant t care fr ther peple,” says Neldner.
      (19) When she asked Australian children aged 4 t 10 t rder pictures f peple, animals, plants and bjects accrding t hw much they cared abut them, the 4-year-lds tended t care mre abut dgs, cats and dlphins than abut classmates, plice fficers and sick peple, but this was reversed in the 10-year-lds.
The reasn children value dgs s highly is prbably due t familiarity, says Wilks. Her studies have fund that children wh spent mre time with dgs were mre likely t say they wuld save a dg ver a persn.
A.Mst adults view human life as especially precius.
B.Her research suggests this shift starts by the age f 10.
C.Surprisingly, children were mre likely t save a dg ver a persn.
D.Fr cmparisn, the researchers repeated this with 178 Plish adults aged 18 t 50.
E.As a result, they dn’t shw a strng preference fr saving ne ver the ther, she says.
F.Abut 28 per cent f children aged 5 t 9 said they wuld save a dg ver a persn, cmpared with 8 per cent f adults.
G.Hwever, grwing evidence suggests many yung children feel differently.
