Flrence was brn n May 12th, 1820 and her jurney t greatness started. She was brn int privilege. She was a plymath genius wh spke multiple languages and pineered the cncepts f statistical analysis that are still used tday. She even memrized the wrks f philsphy and wuld ften debate with her father.
She had the ptin f having a sciety life in a nice big huse, with a staff f servants. Hwever, she craved fr smething wrth ding instead f frittering away time n useless trifles. She determined t end suffering in this wrld as a nurse, but bth f her parents disagreed with that, fr nursing was cnsidered inferir at that time. Flrence ver the next 12-13 years tried cnvincing her parents ver and ver again, but they didn’t budge.
When Flrence turned 30, her dad was cmpletely wrn ut frm resisting and then sent her t Germany fr nursing training. In 1853 her dream was cmpletely realized and she undertk a jb in Lndn at a hspital. Flrence didn’t knw at the time that she was ging t be dragged int ne f the bldiest cnflicts in Eurpean histry — the Crimean War. Nightingale dedicated herself t imprving healthcare during the Crimean War, which led t a huge reductin in the mrtality (伤亡) rates.
It’s difficult t verstate the cntributins that Flrence Nightingale made t medicine, including her wrk n sanitatin and hygiene and n rganizatinal structures, and especially t nursing. Her wrk as well as her lite represents the pwer f a single determined individual wh is set n bringing a psitive change t sciety. Thermal paper, widely used in shpping receipts, express waybills and mvie tickets, has becme an indispensable part f mdern daily life. Hwever, its massive use has lng brught tw unslved prblems. Traditinal thermal paper uses petrleum-based catings, which are hard t degrade in the natural envirnment and cntain harmful chemicals. Meanwhile, the printed persnal infrmatin n it faces serius leakage risks, as the wrds can remain clear fr years even in pen envirnment.
T slve these prblems, Li Min, a material science expert frm Zhejiang University, and her team develped a new type f plant-based thermal paper. The base f the paper is made f nan-cellulse (纳米纤维素) extracted frm straw, a cmmn agricultural waste. Inspired by the clr-fading feature f anthcyanin, a natural pigment, when meeting water, the team chse it as the cre clrant f the new paper.
Different frm traditinal thermal paper which uses bisphenl A as a clr develper, the new paper matches anthcyanin with bidegradable rganic acid. When heated, the tw cmpnents cmbine t frm stable blue-black wrds, which can stay clear fr ver 6 mnths at nrmal rm temperature, fully meeting the daily strage needs f mst cmmercial receipts.
The team carried ut a set f cntrlled experiments t test the paper’s cmprehensive perfrmance. The results shwed that the new paper’s printing clarity matches traditinal cmmercial thermal paper. In the privacy prtectin test, the wrds n it disappeared cmpletely within 30 secnds after being put int water. In the degradatin test, it brke dwn fully in sil within 3 mnths, while traditinal paper nly degraded less than 10%in the same perid.
“Our current lab samples are still in small size,” Li says. “Large-scale industrial prductin may bring new challenges in material unifrmity and prductin cst. We are clearly aware f these pssible prblems, and have started fllw-up research t ptimize the material, t prmte its practical use step by step.”
28. What is a majr prblem f traditinal thermal paper?
A. It has very high prductin cst.
B. It is nt suitable fr daily use.
C. It breaks easily in wet envirnment.
D. It risks serius persnal infrmatin leakage.
29. What is the cre clrant f the new thermal paper made frm?
A. Recycled waste materials.B. Natural plant extracts.
C. Petrleum-based chemicals.D. Industrial by-prducts.
30. What result did Li’s team’s experiment cnfirm?
A. Its printing clarity matches traditinal thermal paper.
B. It can be fully degraded within ne mnth.
C. Its wrds disappear cmpletely in 10 secnds.
D. It has a lnger stable strage time.
31. What is Li Min’s attitude twards the industrial applicatin f the new paper?
A. Fully negative.B. Blindly ptimistic.
C. Ratinal and prudent.D. Ttally uncncerned.

While cral reefs cver nly a tiny fractin f the cean flr, they are hme t millins f plants and animals, representing tens f thusands f species.
Researchers estimate that nearly 60 percent f the wrld’s cral reefs are seriusly threatened. Crals depend n clean, clear, relatively shallw waters t survive. When stressed, they can lse their c-existing zxanthelle (虫黄藻) — a prcess called “bleaching”, which means the cral’s clr is remved. Withut its fd surce, the cral ften dies. Alng plluted castlines r n reefs where plant-eating fish have been severely reduced by fishing, the cral reefs are quickly verrun with seaweed.
The climate events f 1997 — 1998, such as flding, mudslides and destructive strms, struck a majr blw t the wrld’s cral. “Glbal cean and land temperatures averaged abut fur degrees Fahrenheit abve nrmal, and sea level rse at least ne inch abve average,” said Dr. William Patzert, JPL ceangrapher. “We saw areas where fr tens r hundreds f kilmeters, there was 90 percent death. Ttal glbal cral death rate may have been as high as 20 percent.”
This became the best-dcumented glbal cral bleaching event in histry. “Fr the first time,” said Patzert,“scientists were watching all the trpical ceans and seas frm space, while an army f researchers and citizen scuba divers recrded the underwater devastatin — the lcatins and intensity f cral bleaching. These data will prvide an advance in ur understanding f cral reefs.”
Using satellite data n sea-surface temperatures, scientists are develping maps f “ht spts”, places where unusually warm sea-surface temperatures may be stressing crals. These may prvide an early warning f cral reefs in distress and, pssibly, anther wrldwide cral bleaching event. Remte sensing frm satellites and aircraft is prviding new ways t survey and mnitr cral reefs. “We knw that climate events and the heat changes arund the trpics have huge impacts n crals,” said Patzert. “While we can’t change these natural events, the mre we knw abut them and hw they affect crals, the mre we can d t help cral reefs survive.”
32. What can we learn abut the cral reefs?
A. They cntribute t underwater diversity.
B. They recver quickly after being bleached.
C. They cver a large area f the cean flr.
D. They are threatened nly by human activities.
33. What is the rt cause f cral bleaching between 1997 and 1998?
A. The lss f zxanthelle.B. The rise f the sea level.
C. The vergrwth f seaweed.D. The utbreak f climate events.
34. What is the authr’s attitude tward using satellite data in the research?
A. Critical.B. Indifferent.C. Supprtive.D. Negative.
35. Which is the best title fr the passage?
A. Cral Reefs: Hme t Marine Bidiversity
B. Cral Bleaching: Causes and Mnitring Effrts
C. Satellite Technlgy: A Slutin t cral Decline
D. Cral Reefs: Climate Threats and Prtective Measures
