Yet her early days in China were far frm easy. Culture shcks were striking fr Ajibla. The endless high-rise apartments instead f lw huses, the “mtrcycle army” dminating the rads and the msquit bites in the burning ht summer were all unusual fr a British pupil. The language barrier, hwever, prved an even greater frustratin. Thugh she had studied Mandarin fr five years and achieved a tp grade in her GCSE exam, she was rarely understd in real cnversatins. “Peple ften culdn’t understand me when I first arrived in China and wuld ask me t switch t English. I had scred a nine in my GCSE Mandarin exam, s it was incredibly frustrating, at times even disheartening,” she recalled.
But as time went n, armed with the curage t make mistakes, a determinatin t imprve, hurs f practice, and plenty f help frm her Chinese teacher, she gradually mastered real-life cmmunicatin. Eventually, her Mandarin reached the pint where she culd guide her family arund China, chat with taxi drivers, bargain ver prices, and srt ut prblems that came up. Lking back, she had n regrets abut the difficult start. “If I had the chance t live it all again, I wuldn’t change a thing,” she reflected.
Nw back in the UK, Ajibla carries mre than language skills — she hlds a “China literacy” that has bradened her wrldview. Her stry is shared by 34 British students wh have cmpleted the prgram since 2023, with a third grup set t depart sn. Fr Ajibla, that step led t a transfrmative chapter she wuld never frget — a quiet testament (证明) t the idea that thugh languages differ and custms vary, genuine cnnectins between cultures g beynd brders; they are universal and shared.

Laundry pds (洗衣凝珠) have quickly becme ppular amng cnsumers. Peple enjy the mess-free ease f these pre-measured bags that melt easily in the washing machine, s many have given up traditinal liquid r pwder detergent (洗涤剂). It is reprted that mre than 20 billin plastic laundry and dishwasher pds are used every year.
But are they envirnmentally friendly? New research shws they may nt be. The uter film f laundry pds is made f PVA, a kind f plastic that des nt bidegrade. A study published in the Internatinal Jurnal f Envirnmental Research and Public Health shws that ver 75% f plastic pieces frm these pds can be released int ceans, rivers and sil. In wastewater, this plastic film can take in harmful chemicals and heavy metals, and then pass these pllutants up the fd chain.
Envirnmental supprters pint ut that mst cnsumers have n idea that laundry pds cntain plastic. “Peple shuld knw that pds are plastic and PVA is entering ur water and even ur bdies,” says Julia Chen f Plastic Pllutin Calitin, a nnprfit grup.
The Plastic Pllutin Calitin, tgether with Blueland, an ec-friendly cleaning prduct cmpany, has asked the US Envirnmental Prtectin Agency t ban PVA in cnsumer gds. They hpe t gain public supprt fr their request.
Sarah Paiji Y, c-funder f Blueland, said many industry experts knew these pds were nt readily brken dwn, yet they still prmted their use. Y added that there is little fficial research n where PVA ends up after washing, which is why Blueland supprted the recent study.
While the study reached n final cnclusins, researchers have warned that with billins f pds being used yearly, further study is urgently needed. In their pinins, few studies have examined PVA’s real behavir in nature, and mre research is key t understanding its influence n human health and the envirnment.

Imagine standing in frnt f a painting, its clrs and shapes pulling yu int a wrld f emtin and thught. What is happening in yur brain at that mment? And hw can these experiences shape yur mental health? Eric Kandel, a Nbel Prize-winning neurscientist, lks int these questins in his bks, explring the deep cnnectins amng art, neurscience and psychlgy.
Specifically, Kandel emphasizes that art’s meaning emerges frm the interactin between the wrk and the viewer’s brain. Each persn brings his r her wn memries, emtins and cultural cntext t the experience, making it deeply persnal. This mirrrs a crnerstne f mental health care: Therapy (疗法) must be tailred t the individual, just as tw peple may interpret the same painting differently.
When we experience art, multiple brain systems cme alive. The visual and sensry systems decde clrs and shapes. The limbic system (边缘系统), the brain’s emtinal center, stirs feelings like awe r srrw. This multi-layered engagement makes art uniquely psitined t influence mental health. Fr thse with depressin, art can help them recnnect with the wrld; fr thse prcessing trauma (精神创伤), it prvides a safe space t explre difficult emtins.
Kandel highlights the shared principles f reductinism in art and science. Artists reduce cmplex ideas t essential elements, while neurscientists break dwn brain prcesses int neural circuits (神经回路). This apprach helps in mental health care: psychtherapy simplifies verwhelming emtins, and neurscience infrms targeted treatments. Engaging with art als stimulates neurplasticity — the brain’s ability t adapt — which is crucial fr breaking rigid thught patterns caused by depressin, anxiety r trauma.
The integratin f art int mental health care is supprted by Kandel’s scientific framewrk. Art therapy, mindful bservatin f art and develping empathy thrugh art are practical applicatins. Kandel’s wrk reminds us that art is mre than aesthetics — it is a windw int the human mind and a pwerful tl fr healing.

B.It makes mental disrders harder t treat.
C.It can be activated t ease mental sufferings.
D.It causes rigid thught patterns in the brain.

When I was sixteen, I wrked in a fast fd restaurant. And I hated it.

They cmplained abut me fr getting rders wrng after they had changed their minds five times.

I’d reply t custmers in flat, uninterested tnes, my wrds shrt and withut warmth. When I had t ask smene t repeat their rder, my vice held bvius impatience. I stpped smiling, stpped saying the usual greetings, and wuld hand ver their fd with a stiff (僵硬的) arm, my eyes aviding their stare fr fear f any pssible cnflict.
It didn’t take me lng t realize this was unsustainable. Nthing was ging t change unless it was me. I had tw chices: be miserable, bad-tempered, and hate my life, r figure ut hw t get int a better mental space at wrk. That night, I lay awake, struggling bitterly t make my chice.
