Old fishing nets may lk useless, but they add up.The Fd and Agriculture Organizatin estimates fishers thrw away arund 640,000 tns f nets every year. The waste als rts extremely slwly, presenting majr envirnmental prblems acrss nt nly crwded areas f the wrld, but in ceans and beaches.Multiple rganizatins have launched prjects aimed at the issue, but they face a difficult task, especially when it cmes t the larger nets.
In recent years, engineers have started adding fiber frm ld fishing nets t building materials. This prcess helps strengthen the recycled materials fr reuse in cnstructin.Aware f the unused value, researchers decided t wrk tgether n a new way t develp mre usage frm the waste nets.
Once they remved any remaining waste material, they brke dwn the remaining nets, typically made with plastic fibers, and mixed them int a cnnecting material.Next, they pressed, heated, and cut their new material int small blcks.Blck 1 cntained nly fishing net fibers, while Blck 2 featured the net material and an additinal strengthening part.
During the prductin prcess, the cnnecting material inside each blck begins t melt after cming int cntact with ht cncrete.Once melted, the recycled fishing net fibers are set free int the material and strengthen it by imprving bth its flexibility and ability t resist breaking.
Researchers then tested three cncrete mixtures cntaining 40 percent recycled building materials and varius blck ratis(比率) against a cntrl cncrete made withut recycled materials. The team fund that every fishing net-added cncrete was strnger than traditinal cncrete. On tp f this, the cmbinatin f cnnecting materials made it easier t change the cncrete's thickness, which culd reduce the necessary prductin temperature — further reducing its energy requirements and pllutin utput.
The team added that future research culd fcus n better imprving hw the fiber blcks are made,r increasing strengthening part amunts t increase the cncrete's strength. They als believe that cmbining additinal recycled materials with the nets may further imprve the material while als making the industry even mre sustainable.
8.What causes main envirnmental issue f fishing nets?______

D. They can increase cncrete's flexibility.
10.What advantage des adding cnnecting material t cncrete bring?______
A. Lwer prductin temperature.B. Higher strength.
C. Reduced material use.D. Faster cnstructin.
11.What is researchers' attitude twards future studies?______

Fr millins f years, megaldn sharks were tp cean hunters and then came the great whites.New studies f teeth shw that cmpetitin fr fd frm great white sharks may have helped push the giants tward dying ut.
Scientists studied shark eating habits by lking at zinc(锌) in the teeth f 20 living shark species and 13 extinct species, including megaldns.Megaldns and great white sharks lived in similar envirnments, eating sea animals such as whales and seals, the researchers reprted n May 31 in Nature Cmmunicatins.
Megaldns were ne f the largest hunters ever t live, grwing t at least 14 meters lng. This giant began threatening the ceans arund 23 millin years ag.When and why it died ut isn't clear. The species may have remained until abut 2.6 millin years ag.Or it might have disappeared as early as 3.5 millin years ag,right arund the time when the great white shark appeared.
T find ut if the tw sharks ate similar fd,the researchers turned t zinc, which has tw main frms:zinc-66 and zinc-64.The amunts f zinc, kept in tth surface, can shw an animal's psitin in the fd chain.Plants and plant eaters are relatively high in zinc-66.Higher up in the fd chain, that 66-t-64 rati decreases. This means the relatinship between the tw frms f zinc changes as yu mve up the fd chain.
The studies fund that when and where megaldns and white sharks existed tgether, the sharks had similar ratis. That finding suggests that their diets were similar t,accrding t scientist Jeremy McCrmack f the Max Planck Institute fr Evlutinary Anthrplgy in Leipzig,Germany, and clleagues.
Still, that the sharks ate similar fd isn't the nly prf they were in cmpetitin, the researchers say.And there are many factrs that may have helped drive megaldns t die ut.Thse factrs include cean changes, falling fd ppulatins and cmpetitin fr fd with ther cean creatures.
12.Hw did the researchers find the feeding habits f the sharks?______
A. By interviewing many experts.
B. By bringing the sharks back t life.
C. By analyzing zinc in the teeth f the sharks.
D. By returning t the habitats f the sharks.
13.What des the underlined wrd "rati" in paragraph 4 prbably mean?______
A. The ttal amunt f smething.
B. The relatinship between tw numbers.
C. The speed f a chemical change.
D. The distance between tw places.
14.What can we infer frm the last tw paragraphs?______
A. The tw kinds f sharks liked eating the same fd.
B. The tw kinds f sharks must have cmpeted fr fd.
C. The extinctin f megaldns had nthing t d with white sharks.
D. White sharks might nt be the nly factr f the extinctin f megaldns.
15.Which f the fllwing can be the best title fr the text?______
A. There is much cmpetitin in the cean.
B. Great white sharks cmpeted with megaldns.
