Hustn was quite a change frm Suthern Califrnia, where I grew up. I had bravely faced my husband’s jb transfer, but withut my ld rutines f PTA meetings and my kids’ schl events, I wndered what my days wuld lk like.
The answer arrived when Annie, a runner in the neighbrhd, phned and invited me t jin USA Fit. I was hping she wuld hear the disinterest in my vice, but Annie didn’t give up easily. That day her plan succeeded in winning my final yes. Then, we were divided int grups accrding t marathn r half- marathn, and pace. I had a grup and friends!
Frm day ne, fur experienced wmen, Diane, Karen, Jill, and Betsy, never left my side. By fall, I came t believe I culd walk the half-marathn at the required rapid pace. Yet tgether, we encuraged each ther and persevered(坚持).
My gal had simply been t finish the half-marathn. At sme crazy pint, I decided t cmplete the race in less than three hurs. The last mile was nearly intlerable. Our pace had been much quicker than during training. Luckily, the final stretch was bursting with enthusiasm frm the crwded sidewalks.

The research, hwever, isn’t definite abut this pint. While studies have fund that vibratins(震动) caused by sund d affect plants, the jury is still ut n whether the human vice ffers any specific benefit.
Fr many plant wners, thugh, the science is beside the pint. Marquis Matsn, c-funder f the blg the Indr nursery, says she talks t her plants every day because “it feels nice and I think plants get a sense f cmmunity frm my talking t them and that keeps them ging”. On the plant side, a study in a 2003 issue f the jurnal Ultrasnics investigated the effects f the classical music and the sunds f birds, insects and water n the grwth f Chinese cabbage and cucumber. Bth frms f sund expsure increased the vegetables’ grwth. In a 2015 study, researchers expsed marigld (金盏花) and chickpea (鹰嘴豆) plants t light Indian music as well as t traffic nise. They fund that bth types f plants grew and develped better after being expsed t the music fr fur hurs per day, but nt t the traffic sunds.” Plants definitely respnd t vibratins in their envirnment—which can cause plants t grw differently and becme mre resistant t falling ver,” says Heidi Appel, leader f the study. She pints ut, “While sund abslutely matters t plants, we dn’t knw if talking t them makes them grw differently.”
Despite the lack f studies and evidence abut the benefits f talking t yur plants, there is at least ne theretical bnus. “If we identify with a living rganism that we’re taking care f, we’re ging t take better care f it and help them thrive,” Appel says.

30. What can be inferred frm paragraph 3?
A. Traffic sunds d harm t plant grwth.
B. Talking t plants makes them mre sensitive.
C. Classical music is beneficial t plant grwth.
D. Plants will fall ver because f the vibratins.
31. What is Appel’s attitude twards the study?

In the 1970s, psychlgist J. P. Guilfrd cnducted a famus study f creativity knwn as the nine-dt puzzle(九点谜题). He challenged research subjects t cnnect all nine dts using just fur straight lines withut lifting their pencils frm the page. All participants limited slutins t thse within the imaginary square. Only 20 percent managed t break ut f the cnfinement (束缚) and cntinue their lines in the white space surrunding the dts.
The fact that 80 percent f the participants were effectively blinded by the bundaries f the square led Guilfrd t jump t the cnclusin that creativity requires yu t g utside the bx. The idea went viral. Overnight, creativity experts everywhere were teaching managers hw t think utside the bx. The cncept was s ppular that nbdy bthered t check the facts. Nbdy, that is, befre tw different research teams—Clarke Burnham with Kennedy Davis, and Jseph Alba with Rbert Weisberg—ran anther experiment.
Bth teams divided their participants int tw grups. The first grup was given the same instructins as the participants in Guilfrd’s experiment. The secnd grup was tld that the slutin required the lines t be drawn utside the imaginary bx. Guess what? Only 25 percent slved the puzzle. In statistical terms, this 5 percent imprvement is insignificant as this culd be called sampling errr.
Let’s lk a little mre clsely at the unexpected result. Slving this prblem requires peple t literally think utside the bx. Yet participants’ perfrmance was nt imprved even when they were given specific instructins t d s. That is, direct and clear instructins t think utside the bx did nt help. That this advice is useless shuld effectively have killed ff the widely spread—and therefre, much mre dangerus—metaphr that ut-f-the-bx thinking bsts creativity. After all, with ne simple yet brilliant experiment, researchers had prven that the cnceptual link between thinking utside the bx and creativity was a misunderstanding.
32. What did the nine-dt puzzle study fcus n?
A. Bdy flexibility.B. Practical experience.
C. Thinking patterns.D. Theretical knwledge.
33. Why did the tw research teams run the fllw-up experiment?
A. T cntradict the initial idea.B. T test the catchy cncept.
C. T cllect supprting evidence.D. T identify the underlying lgic.
34. Which f the fllwing best describes the fllw-up experiment?
A. Impractical.B. Revealing.C. Fruitless.D. Inspiring.
35. What is the best title fr the text?
A. Nine-Dt Puzzle: A Magic Test
B. Puzzle Slving: A Key T Creativity
C. Creative Thinking: We Fell Fr The Trap
D. Thinking Outside The Bx: A Misguided idea
