Snw lepards (雪豹), fund in the muntainus regins f 12 Asian cuntries, including Russia, Nepal, and China, are facing ppulatin decline due t histrical hunting and habitat damage. But a new study, published in the Prceedings f the Natinal Academy f Sciences, shws that their genetic makeup culd als be influencing their falling ppulatin.
These snw lepards are highly adapted t extreme cld and muntainus envirnments. But there aren’t many snw lepards left: Ppulatin is abut 4,500 t 7,500. And because f this small ppulatin size, they are classified as “vulnerable” species n the Internatinal Unin fr Cnservatin f Nature’s Red List f Threatened Species.
“Because their habitat isn’t s suitable fr living, human ppulatin grwth didn’t really affect snw lepards very much, but climate change will,” says Dmitri Petrv, ne f the study’s authrs. “Humans dn’t need t shw up in their muntains t build r start farming. The climate changes, and it affects everyne and everything, even in such far areas.”
Fr this study, researchers made whle-DNA sequencing data (全基因组测序数据) fr 37 snw lepards. The study fund that many f these snw lepards share the same DNA. Snw lepards that have similar DNA are mre easily affected by envirnmental changes, disease, and hunters, which increases their risk f dying ut verall in a changing envirnment.
The study als shwed that fewer snw lepards had ptentially harmful DNA. Over time, snw lepards were able t “clear ut” bad genes, allwing the ppulatin t remain relatively healthy. Hwever, researchers say that isn’t enugh t prtect them against climate change, and hpe that this study can infrm future prtectin effrts. If climate change starts getting much wrse, then snw lepards might be dying ut relatively easily, simply because climate change has a bad influence n their living space and the ttal ppulatin is s small.

B. The effect f climate change.
C. The interactin with human beings.
D. The cmpetitin with ther species.
15. What is the authr’s attitude t the future f snw lepards?
