Lng befre I had studied a secnd language, I had an abslute rmance with my first
language — English. When I was a by, I realized that by applying certain linguistic (语言的) rules, I culd cin wrds that culd be entirely understd. If smething that qualifies has
qualificatin, I thught smething that terrifies ught t have terrificatin. This way f thinking pened up a whle wrld f creativity t me that had never existed befre.
Hwever, when I started studying ther languages, I lst this fascinatin. The mre I’ve interacted with ther masters f many languages, the mre this seems like an almst universally shared experience: as ne falls in lve with ther languages and digs int ther frms f
cmmunicatin, ne starts t lse an appreciatin f his r her native tngue. This is perfectly natural. As we begin t expand ur views in new and exciting ways thrugh freign languages, ur native language begins t seem uninteresting, and even annying by cmparisn.
But then smething happened that cmpletely refueled the lve I had fr my mther tngue: I encuntered that same creative passin I nce felt in smebdy else’s wrk. One f my favrite bks as a child was Thrugh the Lking-Glass by Lewis Carrll. Reading this bk ver again
as an adult, I was just as allured by it as when I was a kid.
Sme wrds in this bk either aren’t real wrds, r weren’t real wrds at the time that the bk was written. But they feel like specific types f wrds that yu assciate with a certain srt f feeling. The linguistic differences that went int every nn-cntent wrd were abslutely
fascinating, and the mre I read and recited pems in this bk, the mre I felt the familiar warm passin fr English. I decided t take sme fcus away frm freign languages fr a while just t fcus n and prperly appreciate my first language.
24 .What culd the authr d at a yung age?
A .Guess new wrds’ meanings. B .Make up nn-existent wrds.

25 .Why did the authr lse the lve fr English?
A .Its ppularity was in decline. B .Its inflexibility was apparent.
C .It failed t ffer fresh excitement. D .It gave him fewer grwth chances.
26 .What des the underlined wrd “allured” in paragraph 3 mean?

Imagine a future where the mst pwerful cmputers aren’t made f silicn chips, but are grwn frm living cells. This is the ambitius gal f synthetic (合成) bilgy, and a team frm MIT has just taken a grundbreaking step. They have successfully engineered cmmn baker’s yeast (酵母) cells t perfrm basic cmputatinal peratins, effectively turning them int tiny, self-reprducing bilgical cmputers.
Traditinal cmputers prcess infrmatin using a binary (二进制) cde f 0s and 1s,
represented by electrical currents. The MIT team’s system, hwever, wrks differently. They
redesigned the yeast’s genetic circuits s that specific cmbinatins f chemicals act as “input”
signals. When the yeast cell detects these chemical clues, it triggers a chain f internal gene
expressin, ultimately leading t a visible “utput” — fr example, the cell giving ff a green light
under a micrscpe t signal a “YES” answer, r remaining dull fr a “NO”.
This achievement, published in Science, is revlutinary fr several reasns. First, these
bilgical cmputers are incredibly energy-efficient, running n the same sugar nutrients the yeast uses t grw. Secnd, they are self-assembling and self-repairing, prperties n silicn-based
machine pssesses. Mst imprtantly, they can perate in cmplex, liquid envirnments inside the bdy r in ecsystems, where traditinal electrnics fail.
The immediate applicatin lies in smart diagnstics (诊断). Imagine taking in a capsule cntaining these engineered yeast cells. They culd travel thrugh yur bdy, detect specific disease markers, and prduce a clear visual signal in yur waste, ffering a cheap and safe
diagnstic tl. In the lnger term, such “wetware” cmputers culd mnitr envirnmental pllutin r even direct the behavir f future living machines.
Of curse, significant challenges remain. The “calculatin” speed f cells is currently far slwer than that f electrnic cmputers, and designing reliable, cmplex genetic circuits is
immensely difficult. Yet, this research lights the path t a future where cmputatin is smthly wven int the fabric f life itself.
28 .Hw des the bilgical cmputer indicate its utput?
A .By giving ff an bservable signal. B .By detecting specific chemical clues.
C .By activating gene expressin chains. D .By using a cmbinatin f chemicals.
29 .What pwers the bilgical cmputer?
A .Sugar nutrients that supprt yeast grwth.
B .A capsule cntaining engineered yeast cells.
C .The prcess f assembling and repairing itself.
D .Electrical energy generated by genetic circuits.
30 .What might challenge the develpment f bilgical cmputers?
A .Finding a mre energetic rganism. B .Overcming majr ethical cncerns.
C .Imprving genetic engineering design. D .Develping faster electrnic cmputers.
31 .Which f the fllwing is the best title fr this article?
A .A Brighter Future: Hw Yeast Will Diagnse Disease
B .Encde Infrmatin: The Making f a Bi-Supercmputer
C .The End f Silicn: Why living Cmputers Are Taking Over
D .Cmpute Differently: Engineering Cells t Prcess Infrmatin

Cntextualism (语境主义) has a lng histry in histrigraphy (历史编纂学), dating back t the wrk f histrians such as Lepld vn Ranke in the 19th century. His emphasis n
understanding histrical events as they actually were laid the grundwrk fr the develpment f cntextualist appraches t histrical interpretatin. In the 20th century, histrians such as
Quentin Skinner and J. G. A. Pcck further develped cntextualist appraches, emphasizing the imprtance f understanding histrical texts and events within their specific linguistic and cultural cntexts.
A cntextualist apprach t histrical interpretatin requires a deep understanding f the
cultural, scial, and time cntext in which histrical events ccurred. This invlves cnsidering
factrs such as the cultural standards and values f the time, the scial structures and institutins that shaped histrical events, and the time cntext, including the specific histrical perid and any relevant events r trends.
One f the key challenges f histrical interpretatin is aviding anachrnism (时代错位) and presentism. Anachrnism invlves putting mdern cncepts, values, r beliefs nt histrical figures r events, while presentism invlves judging histrical events by mdern standards. A
cntextualist apprach helps histrians avid these errrs by emphasizing the imprtance f
understanding histrical events within their specific cntext. Fr example, it wuld be
anachrnistic t put mdern ideas f human rights nt histrical figures such as Thmas
Jeffersn, wh wned slaves yet became the leading authr f the United States Declaratin f
Independence. Instead, histrians must cnsider Jeffersn’s actins within the cntext f his time, taking int accunt the ppular attitudes twards slavery and human rights.
While cntextualism is a pwerful apprach t histrical interpretatin, it is nt withut its challenges and limitatins. Sme f the key challenges include: the cmplexity f recnstructing histrical cntext, which can be incmplete; the risk f cultural and histrical relativism, which
can make it difficult t evaluate certain histrical events critically; the challenge f balancing
cntextual understanding with the need t draw brader cnclusins and lessns frm histrical events.
32 .What did Skinner and Pcck cntribute t cntextualism?
A .They clarified its definitin. B .They demnstrated its lgic.
C .They expanded its applicatins. D .They emphasized its bjectives.
33 .Which factr may belng t the scial cntext?
A .Strict laws and regulatins. B .Unusual custms and fashins.
C .Scial values and judgments. D .Linguistic symbls and habits.
34 .What des the authr imply in paragraph 3?
A .Jeffersn ignred human rights. B .Causes behind actins were key.
C .Presentism mislabels past events. D .Subjectivity was difficult t resist.
35 .Why is cntextualism an imperfect apprach?
A .It may reach a narrw cnclusin. B .It infers frm secnd-hand recrds
C .It digs int sme pintless elements. D .It may find excuses fr subjectivity.
